1949 EDITORIAL WHAT A HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION MEANS EVERY individual should complete his high school course. Without such an educa- tion, one has small hope of securing a good working position today. Even though it may be impossible to attend college, there should be no excuse for not having a high school diploma. A high school student has an opportunity to learn a great deal more than just that which he Finds in textbooks. Extra-curricula activities are varied. There is at least one activity in school in which every student is interested. Sports, musical organizations, dramatics, and class projects are only a few outstanding inter- ests. By participating -in these one realizes the importance of co-operation and sharing. He not only understands better how to get along with people, but also gains many new friends. After his high school days are over, he is better prepared to go out into the world and to do things for himself. As for the classes themselves, there is a course to fit each student's need. A lot of studying has to be done, of course, for making the most of our four year preparation is the fundamental reason for attending school. A few schools have started a new plan for classes. Only one subject is taught during one term. The atten- tion of the student is concentrated on this one subject, and confusion which might sometimes arise from several studies is eliminated. This plan also proves better for the teacher as well, for he can include in his Held of study much more than before. The problem today in education is not how to keep the young people in school. There are more students' in school today than ever before. During the past few years there has been an in- creasing number of overcrowded schools and classrooms, and a decreasing number of good teachers. e X What is to be done? We must see. that more buildings are built, and that more teachers are in training. If the teachers' salaries were raised, more would be likely to choose that pro- fession. Since our children and young people need and desire an education, we must not let them down. It is our duty to see that they are prepared for the future.
