THE EAGL E 1938 tribution, that he has had a real satis- faction as he has placed his thoughts on paper. Would anyone of the student body wish to be deprived of the oppor- tunity to read and admire these thoughts? In years to come when we are perhaps hundreds of miles from these people, we pick up our old friend, The Eagle, and read the account of the Wilton Academy Football tean1's defeating Farmington, November 11th, nineteen hundred thirty- seveng we live again through the thrill we had when the winning point was made and Wilton again walked home with the bacon and Farmington High School's goal posts. Last but not least is the individual satisfaction each parent receives in read- ing some article that his son or daughter has been able to write through the op- portunity of attending Wilton Academy. Poor as it may be. it is to the folks at home a deep pleasure to thus read a sample of the work which their children have learned to do and which the family sacrifices have made possible. Leona Ranger '38 SPORTSMAN SHIP N order to develop the qualities of good sportsmanship one must try to be a sport. A sport does not, in every sense of the word. imply one of great athletic abili- ties, but one who has ability to conduct himself in a sportsmanlike way. Do you boo or rag the referee or the player of an opposing team when the former makes a mistake decision or the latter an unfair play? As human nature stands, everyone likes to be the winner, but sometimes a good loser is more outstanding than the winner. VVilton Academy has long been recognized for its good sportsmanship. VVe have learned to treat our opposing teams as guests in many ways. We show them our building and compliment them on the game they have played whether they were winners or losers. Do you possess the quality of sports- manship that NVebster believes in? The skill, devotion to, or understand- ing of sports of various kindsg espe- cially conduct becoming to a sportsman, involving honest rivalry, courteous rela- tions, and graceful acceptance of re- sults. Can you read between the lines and recognize the real you in the light of sportsmanship? As a cheer leader of Wilton Academy, I feel that I have a small right to say, VVilton Academy students do not 'boo', yet I know that much can be done to improve our sportsmanship. Really good sportsmanship is not won in a day. Let us build up our qualities of sportsmanship and remember, The loser is always the wisest. Phyllis McLennan '38 Nature's Jewel Case One day I have seen Water, solid black With a sheen like night. And to see her reflection A lady fern leans over With a dewdrop at her throat. One day in a. meadow Daisies held court VVith their hearts of Midas' fare. And to cover the court room A blue bowl is o'er turned With a white Heece for its band. Louise Merchant '38 A Sonnet As in my warm and cozy bed I lie In peace, I gaze upon the magic art Of Jack, the Frost boy, who with speed does dart To each bright window, painting with a sigh, Innumerable ferns and' forms as are on High, Enrobed in white, and light and pure of heartg So, they remain until the, rivulets start, As now I bid these weird shapes good-bye. The minutes Hy and now no forms are seen. In place of these the little dewdrops standg And now I see before me a window clean. Like these are weg now, known in all the land, And then, back on the multitudes we lean, As unimportant as a grain of sand. Virginia Kyes '38

She is always friendly, always helpful, and an ardent backer of VV. A.'s activities and ideals. Althea has earned a prominent place in the Class of '38's per- sonnel, and we understand that next year Bates will find her working for high rank. ELVVYN EDGAR CRAM Good Nature is stronger than t0n1alzcm'ks. Did anyone ever see Elwyn angry? I doubt it. Fellows who like to fish and play a sax are generally good company. A pleasing per- sonality and executive and sports ability combine to make of Elwyn a good class model. HELEN LUCILLE CURTIS Living requires but little life, doing requires much. A note passed, and a whispered giggle and Curtis studies on. Bub- bling over with fun, yet matter of fact, Helen can hold her own in the class room, or playing center, wing or left field. And a peppier talker- upper on the baseball Field was never seen. ARTHUR ELTON DAVENPORT, JR. 'f Hold tlze fort! Davvy is one of the most popular boys in the Senior Class and an ardent backer of W. A. One of the best of our athletes, he takes his defeats with a smile. But next time-opposition watch out! NVatch- ing him on the gridiron is pure pleasure. i 8
