THEEAGL E 1938 Ehitnrialz IN APPRECIATION Her head Not yet by time completely silvered o'er Bespoke her past the bounds of freakish youth, But strong for service still. HE statement has been made, Service is no heritage. Truly this is a comprehensive statement. You may have the finest birthright in the world, and yet if you do not have the desire to help your fellow beings, your lineage doesn't count. Gn the other hand, if your service is perfect freedom, it matters not who your parents were. XVebster defines service: The deed of one who serves: labor performed for anotherg assistance or kindness ren- dered: duty done or required. To many people service is defined clearly by the last phrase-duty dom' or required. It doesn't matter that you do a thing: it is the spirit in which you do it, that counts. If you are the type of person who says, VVell, I suppose l'll have to, whenever a favor is asked of you, then you do not serve in the true sense of the word. Although you may pride your- self on always doing your duty as you see it, you can make up your mind that other people do not view your acts in the light of service. The person who graciously and will- ingly renders kindness and assistance , unasked, is put down indelibly in the book as one who does the deed of service . To one who for thirty years has given her time and has rendered kindness and assistance to NVilton Academy in the capacity of advisor, secretary, treasurer and teacher, we voice our appreciation. VVe offer you the criterion by which to judge of the quality of service, our Dean of Girls, Miss Susan H. Weston. Margaret Mereen '38 OBLIVION ? NE thing that people are always interested in is, After Johnny graduates from Wilton Academy, will he be able to go to college without a year in preparatory school or will he sink into oblivion because he has never re- ceived the proper instruction in high school? I am going to show you by the records of Wilton Academy graduates that Johnny will not only be prepared, but he will be better prepared than many students, for success in college, and that you need never worry about his sink- ing into oblivion . The majority of my observations will be taken over the past nine years, during which time per cent of VVilton Acad- emy's graduates have gone on to schools of higher education, and during which time Mr. Maurice L. Earle has been the principal of the institution. It has often been through his efforts that so many of our studen-ts have had the opportunity to go further. To keep up that high per cent of trial and success is one of his chief interests. In all this period of nine years there has been not one student failure in their college matriculation, and a great per- centage have been on the honor rolls of their respective schools. Indeed. there are at the present time certain alumni, who have not only been on college honor rolls, but are also doing creditable grad- uate work. Some of the leading schools in the country which have accepted students directly from Wilton Academy are Har- vard, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Simmons, Brown and Tufts. Of course we would add the Maine colleges to that list. Many of those who have finished their higher education have entered such pro- fessions as nursing, teaching, medicine, law, dentistry, and the ministry. There are many graduates of Wilton Academy of whom we should be very proud, because of their work as leading educators of the country. Not the least among these are Dr. Franklin VV. John- son, President of Colby College, and Dr. Preston Kyes, for many years connected with the department of Medical Re- search in the University of Chicago, and who is well known for his valuable con-
