'F' E M ! 2 1 4 5 A lm '2 Uwmzo 243262, DIRECTOR OF ALL WlLSON'9 OLYMPICS Members of Class of 1962: This morning about 7:00 A .M., the greatest single airplane tragedy of all time occurred near New York City with ninety-five persons reportedly losing their lives this March 1, 1962. By noon, Broadway, New York City, the world's most famous parade ground, was to be the scene of a joyous welcome to honor John Glenn, the astronaut who achieved great acclaim for his first successful orbital flight three times around the earth. Seldom do we find, historically, such extreme divergence in a day's news. Our family had a tragic occurrence, in its group life, last November 22, just before Thanksgiving. Your class, most kindly, is assigning an ln Memoriam page for our devoted son for which we most humbly thank all of you. The Greeks who, more than a thousand years ago, gave us the Olympic games and contests, testing a sound mind in a strong body challenge us this day as a basic requirement for good generalscholastic achievement. The marathon endurance contests have not always represented the best in our social life but the more fantastic. Ap- plied to our philosophic school life, a well -rounded, basic education in fundamentals, at the high school level, desirabletoday, as it always has been, is to enter the professions of your individual choice according to your best ability. Wilson High School provides for every group level of mental ability: for those who can and wish to excel: for those who are average, to do the best they can: for those who are slow to learn: sympathy and determination for the non-educable but trainable. The shrinking tax dollar is wisely invested in a teaching staff alert to what's new in education, a modern utilitarian school plant with a flexible school curriculum. Just as the pentathlon of old represented the winner of several physically demonstrative, enduring contests, so we call upon you to continue your education. The Wilson joint School Board is composed of three member school districts--Lower Heidelberg Township, Sinking Spring Borough and Spring Township. The three districts, which meet together once a month, were formed as a jointure on july l, 1954. ln ad- dition to the joint meetings, school board mem- bers attend their individual board meeting. PRINCIPAL. MR. REHRER, TURNS OUT VICTORS Dear Graduates, The hope of every athlete who enters as a contestant in the Olympics is to equal or excel an established rec- ord. Every task undertaken by us in our daily lives presents a similar challenge to each of us who has the ambi- tion to succeed. To be satisfied with the record of achievements of the past represents contentment which may welllead to stalemate or even disaster. Constant search and research toimprove the physical and cultural aspects of our nation are not only desirable but mandatory if we, as a free society, expect to survive among the nations of the world. lt is difficult for most of us to understand the value of the effort put forth to conquer outer space. However, it appears that the nations' leaders use this venture, regardless of cost or sacrifice, as a means toimpress each other with their superiority.ln this race to prove themselves superior, the goal of the enemies of the free world will be the acceptance of their philosophy of life and form of government. Your knowledge of forms of governments, as learned in high school, should make each of you determined that the ultimate goal of our rivals for supremacy shall never be realized. Since colonial days our freedom has been threatened many times. Whenever this has happened, we have re- affirmed our stand to preserve it regardless of sacrifice or cost. Had we been content to continue to employ the use of weapons and methods of colonial warfare, defeat would have been a certainty. As graduates, you will have the opportunity and responsibility not only to maintain, but also to improve the lot of mankind. Regardless of what you do -- enter college or other institutions of learning or training, take a job, or enter the armed services of our nation -- we urge you to be as determined to give of your best as are the athletes who enter the Olympics.
