THE I 962 WILSONIAN PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF WILSON HIGH SCHOOL WEST LAWN, PENNSYLVANIA WILSON OLYMPICS Everyfour years, thousands of great amateur athletes from the nations of the world compete in a gigantic sports show called the Olympic Games. No other sports spectacle has a background so historic, dramatic, or thrilling, Flags flutter from the top of a crowd- filled stadium. Cheers ring out as a. swift runner carries ablazing torch into the arena to light the Olympic flame. The lighted torch has been brought many miles from Elis, Greece where the games began 2, 500 years ago. We, as seniors, have now carried the Torch of Wilson High School for four years. It is time for us to light the fires of resourcefulness and ingenuity. just as the Olympic Games develop the whole man, it has been the prime ob- jective of Wilson High School to build the men and women of tomorrow from the youth of today. As we prcpare to enter the threshhold of life, we are equipped with an education, not only of thc history and fundamentals of our civilization, but of an understanding of our fellow man. DE DICATION For his willingness to give of himself to the educational and social growth of our class, We will always remember one of our most helpful advisors, not only during our junior year, but also in our senior year. His unselfish service as sponsor to the WILSONIAN and attitude toward the Senior Class has added to the respect We allhave for him. Therefore, we, the Class of 1962, proudly dedicate our WIL SONIAN to Mr. Forrest D. Fleishood- - teacher, advisor, and friend. 1 1114 QL Lf 9 , ' mfiaizfsm 6222515252 5 3,955 wg, ggwgfsw,-m,,,S ,Mem W ' W widaiqgif? The faculty and student body note with passing of Mr. William C. Kutz, Jr. who died in the Read- Kutz, jr. is the z, Sr. in 1960, he re- studies. Active he participated a willing spon- deep regret the ing Hospital on November 22, 1961. Mr. son of Supervising Principal William C. Kut After graduating from Albright College turned to Wilson High School to teach social in many community and church activities, in Wilson's social functions as well and was sor for many school clubs and activities. His friendship and understanding will always remain in the minds and hearts of those who knew him. William Cullen Bryant, in THANATOPSIS, tells us about living a life as follows: As the long train Of ages glides away, the Sons of men-- The youth in 1ife's fresh spring, and he who goes In the full strength of years, matron and maid, The speechless babe, and the grayheaded man-- Shall one by one be gathered to thy side, By those, who in their turn shall follow them. So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan, which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams . . avgg' A ,fi A QQ , X ,W Q .LG M, - immgwvws, f b1.wgW,:f5wwmfmsggv'+,3s5w - wen- fgwwgewwggaw-M Agqsfwmfwsfgffgwfgpf ,,.:- . ,W .L .. ., ,354 ,W W.f1eLff.f ,f.. ,wk ge, infL5swww?fMwes1wwza21-.AM. if, as-V 1, :W A. ,V H V. .VH .,. .. ., - . , ,, ., . ,.,., ,, .W , . 'F' E M ! 2 1 4 5 A lm '2 Uwmzo 243262, DIRECTOR OF ALL WlLSON'9 OLYMPICS Members of Class of 1962: This morning about 7:00 A .M., the greatest single airplane tragedy of all time occurred near New York City with ninety-five persons reportedly losing their lives this March 1, 1962. By noon, Broadway, New York City, the world's most famous parade ground, was to be the scene of a joyous welcome to honor John Glenn, the astronaut who achieved great acclaim for his first successful orbital flight three times around the earth. Seldom do we find, historically, such extreme divergence in a day's news. Our family had a tragic occurrence, in its group life, last November 22, just before Thanksgiving. Your class, most kindly, is assigning an ln Memoriam page for our devoted son for which we most humbly thank all of you. The Greeks who, more than a thousand years ago, gave us the Olympic games and contests, testing a sound mind in a strong body challenge us this day as a basic requirement for good generalscholastic achievement. The marathon endurance contests have not always represented the best in our social life but the more fantastic. Ap- plied to our philosophic school life, a well -rounded, basic education in fundamentals, at the high school level, desirabletoday, as it always has been, is to enter the professions of your individual choice according to your best ability. Wilson High School provides for every group level of mental ability: for those who can and wish to excel: for those who are average, to do the best they can: for those who are slow to learn: sympathy and determination for the non-educable but trainable. The shrinking tax dollar is wisely invested in a teaching staff alert to what's new in education, a modern utilitarian school plant with a flexible school curriculum. Just as the pentathlon of old represented the winner of several physically demonstrative, enduring contests, so we call upon you to continue your education. Be industrious, play the game of life fairly and squarely, love thy neighbor as thyself, enjoy and appreciate the good things of life. Sincerely, William C. Kutz Chief School Administrator PRINCIPAL. MR. REHRER, TURNS OUT VICTORS Dear Graduates, The hope of every athlete who enters as a contestant in the Olympics is to equal or excel an established rec- ord. Every task undertaken by us in our daily lives presents a similar challenge to each of us who has the ambi- tion to succeed. To be satisfied with the record of achievements of the past represents contentment which may welllead to stalemate or even disaster. Constant search and research toimprove the physical and cultural aspects of our nation are not only desirable but mandatory if we, as a free society, expect to survive among the nations of the world. lt is difficult for most of us to understand the value of the effort put forth to conquer outer space. However, it appears that the nations' leaders use this venture, regardless of cost or sacrifice, as a means toimpress each other with their superiority.ln this race to prove themselves superior, the goal of the enemies of the free world will be the acceptance of their philosophy of life and form of government. Your knowledge of forms of governments, as learned in high school, should make each of you determined that the ultimate goal of our rivals for supremacy shall never be realized. Since colonial days our freedom has been threatened many times. Whenever this has happened, we have re- affirmed our stand to preserve it regardless of sacrifice or cost. Had we been content to continue to employ the use of weapons and methods of colonial warfare, defeat would have been a certainty. As graduates, you will have the opportunity and responsibility not only to maintain, but also to improve the lot of mankind. Regardless of what you do -- enter college or other institutions of learning or training, take a job, or enter the armed services of our nation -- we urge you to be as determined to give of your best as are the athletes who enter the Olympics. This undoubtedly will help assure you a happy and successful life. The faculty joins me in wishing you a happy and successful future. Very sincerely yours, Clayton D. Rehrer, Principal 12 DISCIPLINE BUILD9 CHARACTER To the Class of 1962: To win a prize in the Olympics was one of the greatesthonors that could befall a Greek. To stand on the threshold of the Atomic and Space Age is not only an honor but a chal- lenge to each member of this class. These are not ordinary times. Mankind is passing through one of the most critical ages ofall history. Human society is being shaken to its foundationsg the social and political struc - ture of the world is being transformedg new doctrines and philosophies profoundly hostile to theidea of individual liberty are sweeping over the earthg and the tide of despotism is rising among nations. To meet these threats, we need young men and women who are men - tally and physically alert, who have the inspi- ration and unity of purpose so necessary to achieve a society of free and equal men throughout the world. The way in which you, the graduates, meet the challenge of the Atomic and Space Age will have much to do with how the nation's problems are solved in the years ahead. Congratulations and best wishes! May God bless you in your future work. Dr. Aaron R. Miller TRAINERS BUILD QTAMINA My sincere congratulations to the members of the 1962 graduating class for having achieved your Olympic goals. I am sure your constant dedication to the goals you have set for yourselves since the beginning of your junior high schoolyears will continue to help you tohurdle the obstaclesin life's pathways, enable you to leap across the abyss of inde- cision thatwill surely face you, and give you the added strength to vault over the pinnacle of high aspirations tt the plateau of success for your final sprint to Olympia.
