KUTZ, B.A., M.A. Kutztown State Teachers College, Franklin and Marshall College, Columbia University, The Pennsylvania State Col- lege, Temple University. A century ago Forty-ninersi' were trekking westward, at- tracted chiefly by the lure of gold. Your group of Forty-niners can explore, not only the unknown realms of science, but also the larger realms of undiscovered human resources. Because of the complex social order of living in One World , the laurels of victory await those who achieve success in World Diplomacy, The Christian Ministry, So- cial Welfare, Public Education, Journalism and Personnel Work, as well as discovering new wonders in Science and Medicine. The happiest days of your life were spent in school in surroundings where you were given an opportunity to de- velop a well-rounded, wholesome personality, where you practiced rights and duties of citizenship in a freedom- loving democracy, where you had a friendly guide helping in determining your lifes choice of vocational and avoca- tional interests, where there was a genuine mutual interest in your physical, mental and moral well-being. All these factors were constantly in the minds of your teachers to help you prepare yourself for happy, successful living in tomorrow's world. Sincerely, WILLIAM C. KUTZ PRINCIPAES MESSAGE TO GRADUATES The faculty members of Wilson High School join me in extending heartiest congratulations and sincere best wishes to the class of '49. Happiness and success is usually attained by a willingness to give freely of one's talents and efforts. We shall miss you, Forty-niners, your pleasant smiles and warm person- alities. You have helped to make this, my first year at Wilson, a most enjoyable one. In giving freely of your services and effort, you have left the school a better place than you found it because of your presence here. Yet yours has been the reater ain For he who ives much receives 1 S 8 - 8 1 much. It is our fond hope that success may continue to attend your efforts. And that now, as you join that illus- trious group of your fellow Wilson Alumni, may the hopes and ideals that have been your birthright continue to guide you and lead you forth to happiness. We shall look for you from time to time and expect you to continue your fine support of Wilson High School and all of its activities. With best wishes, B. ANTON HESS B. ANTON HESS, B.S., M.S.Ed. Much to my amazement our class had been chosen as the best example of good high school living. Not much emphasis was placed on our junior high school activities, but a Mrs. Ayres and a man called Gus were mentioned in a faculty note. Leon Moyer, Lois Miller, Ronald Zechman, and Gloria Burdan received the American Legion awards in eighth grade. The following year the 49ers bid an adieu to Mrs. Ayres. Silly was a perfect description of our sophomore year, but our financial status soon changed that to worry. A lovely lady brightened the faculty, namely Mrs. Wildermuth fformerly Miss june Plowfieldj and helped make the year a jolly but studious one??? With Ted Hopkins setting the style in knickers and Stanley Steamer Shade toasting bread over a bunsen burner, it must have been a strain on june, as it drove her right out of Wilson. A movie put some money in our piggy bank, but report cards resulted in a few morbid letters to parents, leaving the dim reality that school was still an institution of learning. For class officers we had some who's who candidates in Leon Moyer, Robert Mull, Janice Hinkle, and Marlene Proger. Five peppy V. cheerleaders were picked at the end of the year: joan Witman, Deone Dupre, Gloria Burdan, Marlene Proger, and Elsa Holl. jolly but jerky marked our path on the straight and narrow as juniors. This was a year of new attractions such as class hats and rings, both of them receiving approval from the whole school. The executive department for the year was made up of four commercial students, namely Ronald Zech- man, Morris Beebe, Mervin Schroll, and Marlene Proger. A dance called the Shamrock Swirln Qorigin unknownj was a good money maker along with a successful card party. Physics and short- hand were but a mere blot on our report cards. Richard Dry and Barrie Breier initiated Mr. Friend to our algebra classes, even though they never made the Honor Society. Our contributions to the society were Alice Grimes, Marilyn Whitlock, Leon Moyer, Lois Miller, and Claire Gries. An active interest in athletics helped a junior varsity basketball team to gain county recognition. john Hart- line's hook shots, Leon Moyer's football catches, and Robert Schoellkopf's two-baggers were big fac- tors in the success of the athletic program. Nancy Kulp, Ioan Witman, and Claire Gries helped the girls boost their side of the story. Then came the junior-senior prom, the high-light of the year. Everyone was busy helping to decorate the gym with oriental scenes to make our last event of the year simply superf' Sophisticated seniors? No, still a little on the daffy side. CFor more information on this subject, consult the 12-1 homeroomj Mervin Schroll blackmailed Mr. Naulty with a picture. We didn't know Mr. Naulty looked so nice in English shorts! The spectator staff members were hounded by Lois CEditor-in-Chiefj Miller, who was continually rushing everyone for his article. The same goes for Claire Gries, Editor-in-Chief of the Wilsonian and Mrs. Rollman, advisor of the yearbook. Look out! Here come three cars! Not three cars, but john Hartline's Essex with three horns. fHorns permitted by exclusive permit from Mr. Hess.j Many senior lads and lassies were busy selling hotdogs, ice cream, and soda at the football games. The commercial section dominated the class of- ficers with Ronald Zechman, Leon Moyer, Shirley Kline, and Marlene Proger. Top honor of the year went to Clyde Bensing, president of Student Council. Clyde also writes poems. jingle Bells, jingle Bells, here comes Santa and the Christmas Tree Trot. 'Twas time to start thinking of leaving dear old Wilson. Class night, baccalaureate, class trip fHeaven helped New York after we were throughj and finally the big day of rejoicing and tears, ffraduation. Ninety-one 49ers leave Wilson for the last time. Many of our classmates and pals will see all parts of the world. If you wish to find them, look for the list of top U. S. executives or by the present trend, the idol of a million comic book fiends. Our class tops all in noise fquote Mr. Lloyd Millerj and in making teachers' hair turn grey. But no matter what anyone says, we never had more fun anywhere. R. Doris Adams The fourth year of student government at Wilson has proved successful for the two principal objectives for this year: improvement of better student relationships and the revision of several activities in the point system were achieved. Through the efforts and supervision of the Council, this year's magazine campaign was brought to a profitable conclusion. A plaque was awarded to Wilson for going over the top in sales. With the proceeds of this campaign, Wilson benefited when the Council purchased three radios and a wire recorder. Various activities were conducted throughout the year by the Council. A Hag pole was erected on the athletic field. Ten students represented Wilson at the Student Council Conference at West Reading. The Council along with the National Honor Society spon- sored the Alumni Dance at which William Zimmerly was elected president of the Alumni Association. The Council also conducted dances after the basketball games. The faculty advisor was Mr. Aaron Miller. l 47 9 4 9 NATIONAL I-IONOR SOCIETY Firfz Row-left to right-B. Sebastian, B. Brossman, M. The mid-winter concert and the spring Night of Music gave pupils and parents excellent opportunities to witness results of co-operation and talent. Another activity sponsored by the band was the Valentinels Dance. Bright, new uniforms, long and eagerly awaited, were procured this year.
