As We look back on our days at Wilson High School, We regard them as the happiest days of our lives. I. E. H. 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 31 Class Prophecy Bong! Bong! sounded the chimes in my up-to-date l96l apartment in the beautiful city of Reading. It was the mailman bringing me an invitation to a reunion of the class of '46 of Wilson High to be held at the 'lClover Club, which was formerly Meisky's in Spring- mont. Arriving at the club early that evening I was greeted by the proprietor, Robert Welder. As I entered the spacious ballroom, the sound of the alumni orchestra tuning up reached my ears. When I had crossed the floor to greet my classmates, Bob Naftzinger, a promi- nent Philadelphia lawyer, informed me that he was leading the gang that night. I-lis fellow musicians were Dick Boyer, a professional baseball player, Shirley Miller, co- owner of an exclusive dress shop, Donald Focht, who had realized his ambition to be- come a dentist, George Simmon, mechanical engineer, Herb Welder, who had won All- American honors as a football star at Muhlenberg College, and Willard Conrad, head radioman for the NBC Network. The hands of the clock pointed to nine, and with the first lilting strains from the orchestra, the guests began to arrive in small groups, I joined our host at the door in order to greet my ex-classmates. First to arrive was Bill Angstadt, who informed me of his receiving the post of ambassa- dor to Argentina. On his arm was Arlene Lengel, who had entered the teaching profes- sion. Next came Dallas Leininger, a successful banker, and josephine Rohrbach, co-owner of a bingo parlor in Reading. While josie and I were reminiscing, Roddy Keiser and his charming blonde wife joined us. Rod had just returned from a Vagabond tour of the world, about which we could read in his forthcoming series of articles in Colliers. Turning to find the room quite full, I crossed to a small group of fellows standing nearby. Elton Weitzel, a breeder of prize horses, was engrossed in conversation with a veterinar- ian who turned out to be Forrest Strawbridge, while several mechanics, namely, Harry Graul, Raymond Folk, Richard Krick, Floyd Hart, and Carl Heffner, were comparing notes as to their respective jobs, Moving on, I was hardly noticed by Kenneth Delp, a New York theater manager, who was listening to joe Organtini's latest version of the flat-dog joke. joe, incidentally, had become quite successful with his small trucking firm in Berkshire Heights. At the urging of some of the fellows lolling around impatiently, I entered the powder room to hurry some of the girls up. Reflected in a large mirror to my right was the face of Shir- ley Cake, directress of nurses at johns Hopkins', while looking over her shoulder was Fae Raezer, now a budding star on the New York stage after a long series of tough breaks. Peering into other mirrors were Ruth Becker and Arlene Reist, efficient office workers, and private secretaries, Lucille Trupp, Myrle Guinther, Shirley Geiss, and Flora Guin- ther, all rattling away about their respective bosses. Also present were Betty Mogel and Ruth Dundore, who were quite contented to keep house for their respective husbands. Betty complimented me on my gown, and I forthwith informed her that I had purchased it at Clique's, an exclusive Cleveland dress shop run by Mildred Mull and Shirley Mil- ler, with gowns designed by Mrs. james Lippincott, the former Nancy Achenbach. I my- self was employed in drafting the patterns and making the gowns in the same establish- ment, and Mary Rothermel was holding the position of financial secretary to our small group. Off to one side I perceived Phyllis Good, M.D., carrying on a friendly debate with May- ree Kay Ledford, art professor at Beaver College, and joyce Yocom, who had not allowed her marriage to interfere with her aeronautical interests. Nearby jane Dunkelberger, owner of a small beauty salon, was demonstrating the latest hair-do to Arlene Geise, another housewife. Iwas jolted rudely from this interesting topic by a gentle pat on the back and shook hands with Pat Longenecker, physical ed instruct- ress at Ursinus College, as I picked myself up off the floor. al' uk 'A' ik 'k uk 'A' 'A' 'k ir 'A' 'A' 'A' 32 Einally with the help of Miss Seitzinger, Mrs. Steinmetz, and Miss Zug, l managed to herd the girls from the room, and the dance floor was soon filled with happy, smiling couples. My first dance was with Roderick Reber, a creative designer of womens hats, from whom l learned that only eleven of our former teachers were present. Several of them, ,he said, had moved on to other schools, while others had retired from the profession in order to marry. The teacher who surprised us all, though, was Mr. Eberts, who had at last talked some innocent girl into marrying him. Next l danced with Dick Ruth, who was now in the midst of his third marriage, and he told me that lim Lippincott had just accepted a coaching position at Temple University, after distinguishing himself as a high school coach in Pennsylvania for many years. As we danced, l noticed Robert Schultz, an industrial designer, and Doris Walter, Powers model, dance by. Artie Stabnau, engineer on a large transport plane, also seemed to be having a good time with Madeline Goodhart, who had married an ex-serviceman soon after her graduation. Being near the door when the piece ended, we greeted two late arrivals, Dr. Werner Kaese, who had just performed an emergency appendectomy, and Stewart Roth, stage manager of the Metropolitan Opera House. l then accepted an invitation to join the Heffner brothers at a ringside table and found that Carl was making his career in his spacious workshop, while Earl was busily en- gaged in running his own dairy farm. At the next table sat Earl Matz, George Berger, james Werner, and Earl Nye, discussing the latest atomic milker, for they too had their own farms. Franklin Lamm, a truck driver, soon joined their group also. As the music resumed, the rays of a slowly moving ceiling spotlight fell on many cou- ples. George Hess could be seen discussing his latest book on drugs with Louise Weddle, R.N., and l spotted Ralph East, an accountant in a large Chicago firm, dancing past with Georgine Simmon, a housewife. There, too, on the sidelines was Arlene Kissling joking with john Paris, who was making a good living as an archery instructor, and his wife, the former Martha Werner. Near the band stand was a little corps of housewives, chatting about their respective hubbies. Present were Dorothy Meleizen, Gertrude Barnett, Shirley Rhoads. and Doris Bock, all of whose husbands were veterans of World War ll. Meanwhile Richard Phillips, a building contractor, and Elizabeth Hartline, a kindergar- ten teacher, were roaring gleefully over one of Mr. Brumbach's jokes over in a corner of the room. Nearby, ,Violet Guinther, a shorthand teacher, was demonstrating a new Gregg system to Virginia Bowman, Helen Keenan, jean Showalter, and Fay Newkirk, successful businesswomen. But wait, someone is interrupting the gathering! lt is another late arrival, Ray Koehler, who was also affiliated with a professional ball club. He is accompanied by Adam Krick, who had chosen to make his career in the United States Navy. Soon Natalie Alspach, swimming instructor to young girls, stopped to converse with me, and we were joined by Norman Carles, foreman in a construction company, and lean Conway, who had flown up from Mexico City for the occasion. However, as four o'clock approached, the orchestra broke into the strains of the Star Spangled Banner, and after that, we all joined our voices in the Alma Mater. Singing lustily behind us were Violet Blankenbiller, Thelma Keffer, and Ruth Ohlinger, all hold- ing important office jobs, and Bernard Sheidy, Richard Steffy, and Paul Heck, who were on the list of up-and-coming businessmen. As the last notes faded and died away, there was a lump in the throat of everyone present. Tears could be perceived on the cheeks of several, for the thoughts of our high school days were recalled by the singing of that be- loved refrain. Leaving reluctantly, l perceived a gang of fellows piling into Charles Keener's Plymouth, another scene reminiscent of the days at Wilson, and a wave of sentiment swept through me.
