'45 di g I lllllullllnlllllllu lllll ll llllllllll 'U W' 34 CLASS PROPHECY Dear Diary, How long ago it seems since I was seventeen. It hasn't been long in actual time-only twenty years. It was not so very long ago that we were bemoaning the fact that we were green freshies, and were unduly trampled upon by the lordly upper classmen. Then, we, the class of '45, became those lordly upper classmen. Spring of that year brought graduation and with it separation for most of us. But we were Americans, and we realized that it was as American to Want something better, as it is to want a cham- pion baseball team. Tonight in 1965, we were together again. Years ago, as high school students, it would have been a dream that might come true, not a reality as it is now. Earl Rothermel, distinguished member of our class, was elected President of the United States. Washington, D. C. with its glittering lights and stately buildings was familar to most of us, but having been invited to the inaugural ball of the President Was a new experi- ence to all. As I entered the spacious blue ballroom of the White I-louse, I was lost in a world of beauty. The mood of remembrance was expressed in the soft music of the twilight hour . . . in the rhythmic beauty of swishing skirts and the low murmur of familiar voices. I stood there lost in mirrored memories past-in dancing dreams of days soon to be, but not alone, for on my right stood Iack Rothermel, today a prominent New York lawyer. My eyes wondered over the figures before me and rested upon a group of men still wearing the uniform of their country. Among them were Richard Ulrich, Glenn Care, Edward Hartman, and Raymond Sonon, of the United States Navy, all in officers uni- forms. Conversing with them were Ioan Wenger, a lieutenant in the Woman's Marine Corps, Harold Strause and Ned Kauffman, Merchant Marines in War days. Laughter rose from the opposite side of the ballroom, and we ventured across to join in the fun, Marilyn Kachel and Roy Sprucebank were busily engaged in entertaining a group of ladies, in fact, it was the gang together as they were years before: Ianet Goodhart and Ruth Miller, both happily married, lean Farkas, still working for the gov- ernment, and Wanda Brown, a great star in the theatrical world. With them were Edith Gilbert,, now a Philadelphia telephone operator, Betty Iane Kreitz, Geraldine Anderson, Marion Potteiger and her husband, and Babette Bachman, aviatrix. . As the music began I Watched the happy couples move gracefully on to the dance floor. There were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ulrich, she was formerly lean Geiss. Besides them were Richard Sebastian, a successful engineer, and his wife. Dancing near the center of the floor were Charles Kissling, a mechanical engineer, and Mildred Donkel, private secretary to a Washington official. At that moment Ray Plymyer, a great success in the medical profession, invited me to join a group in discussing the marvels of the medical world. I was delighted to see Geraldine Hardinger, Bessie Irwin, Vivian Esslinger, Dorothy Mattes, Viola Pyle, and Dorothy Foreman, all graduate nurses, again. Later Patricia Peffley, now Dr. Peffley, and Betty Ann Stevenson, a psychologist, joined in our talk. It was sometime later when Frances Carnevale, Ray's private secretary, called Ray to the telephone, breaking up our medical circle. But immediately our attention was diverted to Carl Schwenk, now an aeronautical en- gineer, explaining the fundaments of his perfect mousetrap to his fellow engineers Ray IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII I I Ill I I I I IIIII I IIII II I IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII I ll IIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIII I I Il IIIIIIII II I IIII I I llllllllllllllll Ill 35 Oxenreider, Atlee Kramer, and Robert Weller. Shirley Keiser and Pauline Heister, who had been reliving central treasury memories, june Kutz, teacher at Wilson High School, and Phyllis Artelt, dressmaker for Sack's joined the group for curiosities sake. In crossing the floor to meet my partner, I met Elwood Snook, Donald Walter, and El- wood Katzman, all of whom have heeded the gypsy call, engaged in exchanging stories of their travels. When I reached my partner, I found him deep in conversation with George Seifrit, who was an aerial gunner during the war, and Nelson Kauffman and james Guiles, both T.W.A. transport pilots. On the side lines William Piper was busily relating the facts of meteorology to Richard Zlfroutman, naval pilot, William Fritz and Donald Heffner, both United States commercial iers. A small group of secretaries and typists gathered in a quiet section of the room to com- pare their experiences. They were Ieanne Welder, Virginia Straw, Darlene Heist, Arlene Trupe, Margaret Bickel, Betty Becker, Fern Young, Fern Essig, and Harriet Bare. I was informed by Marion Fitterling, private medical secretary, that these girls have rendered their services over all the world. The ever-popular Star Dust was played by the orchestra, and we joined the other whirling figures. While dancing we exchanged greetings with Gloria Tobias, airline hostess, and William Skinner, advertising manager in a Chicago firm, now happily mar- ried. On leaving to enter the adjoining room we met Betty Miller, now a medical secretary, and her husband. Hearing baseball mentioned, we turned to find Rudolph Scalese, professional baseball player, relating stories to an ardent fan, Herbert Ulrich. Rodger Lamp, Allard Burns, an iceman, Bert Brenner, airplane mechanic, David Dondore, owner of a small farm, War-- ren Boyer, and George Hess were gathered close to hear his stories. Directly opposite sat Iune Lutz, champion equestrian, Evelyn Naregang, Helen Fox, Pearl Iacoby, Gladys Deeds, june Hyman, hair stylist, and Doris Wunderly and Marjorie lohnston, dress designers, who among other fashion designers have bestowed on fash- ion in this country a new feeling of rhythm and vitality. In the far corner sat james Longenecker, Walter Leibold, and Ralph Hammond, engag- ed in a conversation of some secrecy. Since all three were successful business man- agers, we judged the conversation concerned the stock market. A blair of trumpets summoned us to the ballroom where the spotlight shone on Shirley Leinbach, radio singing star, and Robert Schoffstall, formerly a navigator of a naval plane, standing before the orchestra. When all had assembled, they sang our Alma Mater, a song that rooted deep in our memories and brought tears to the eyes of all. Richard Krick, New York Times photographer, stood by to catch that lasting impression. Too soon the evening had come to a close, but as the first rays of dawn broke through the gray clouds of Ianuary, We left the beautiful home of the President. just before I close my eyes in delicious sleep, I know that I shall savor every moment of this day all my life long. While We are reminiscing over by-gone days, one mem- ber in particular catches our eye. Although the class of '45 never knew him as a teacher, he was one of the faculty mem- bers everyone respected. First Lieut. Leonard F. Stephan was a graduate of the class of l933, He graduated from Albright College and the University of Pennsylvania. He taught the sophomore and junior class social studies at Wilson High School for four years until he was inducted into the armed forces on September 23, 1941. Lieutenant Stephan was the former president of the Reading Civic Opera Society and a member of the West Lawn Advent Lutheran Church. At Fort Benning, Where he attended Officers Candidate School, he was married to Anne Minnich, also a Wilson High graduate. He was sent overseas to England in Iune, 1944. Lieutenant Stephan was killed in action September 25, l944, in France. We, the class of '45, will remember him for the guidance, friendship, co- operation, and inspiration he has offered to the entire student body of Wilson High School. u lllllllllll II 39 - .I - ' ' Q 9 - i-4? t ts? The game was with Shillington High School on our home field. The girls were unable to travel to other schools because ot the lack of transportation. The interest shown in hockey during the 1944 season gives us good reason to believe that next year more games will be played with increasing success.
