This type of debating permits the participation of the audience after the main speeches have been given by the debaters. The question for debate was Resolved that the United States should join in reconstituting the League ot Nations. The members of our squad were Arthur Boyd, Barry Boyles, David Briner, Elisabeth Lutz, Geraldine Miller, Margery Plowiield, Paul Ruth, and Geraldine Wentzel. Our team participated in discussions at Shillington High School, Mt. Penn High School, Muhlenberg High School, and Wilson The capable coaches oi this forensic group Were Miss Virginia Zug, Miss Grace Mengel, and Mr. Lloyd Miller. GIRLS' HOCKEY TEAM This year, due to War conditions and restrictions, there were no com- petitive games With other schools as in previous years. However, this did not dampen the girls' spirits, and their games were solely intra-mural. There were two complete teams, the captains ot which were Esther Shoup and Betty Berger. Last tall on Tuesday and Thursday evenings after school the girls could be seen seriously participating in play. GLEE CLUB DIRECTOR ......... ..,...............................,.. .....,..... M R . There Were special groups picked from the chorus, such as the mixed chorus, girls' sextette, boys' octette, and boys' quartet. The mixed chorus presented several numbers at the annual band concert. The various groups presented entertainment at the Brotherhood Meeting of the Advent Lutheran Church on March 27. 45 Wilsonzan Citi!! W2'0j9A6Cy The streets of New York were filled with happy-looking people in spite of the rainy, foggy disagreeableness of this Iune night. lt was 1954, the night of our class reunion. Our cab skidded to the curb in front of an impressive hotel, and as we stepped out, we heard the sounds of merriment from within mingling with the clatter and clang of the busy New York street and knew that our class was the same group of happy, laughing seniors that had so long ago set out to seek its fortune. At the door we were greeted by Mr. Richard Doerrman and his charming wife, the former Geraldine Miller. Rememu ber? They were host and hostess at our lr.-Sr. Prom. Dick, pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, told us that we were to be entertained by Dave Briner and the country's num- ber-one dance orchestra. We had all heard David's radio program on Tuesday eve- nings. lust then the band started the first number, and not wanting to miss anything, we hurried to our table. Everywhere l turned was a familiar face, each one of which brought back a pleasant memory, and l was anxious to speak to each of my old friends. Hearing a babble of medical and technical terms at a table behind me, I turned and learned that these busy chatterers were Anne Hagy and Robert Schoellkopf, both chemists for Du Pont Inc., Margery Plowfield a medical technician, and Dr. Chauncey DePugh, famed bone specialist. They were so busy discussing the newest develop- ments in science and medicine that l did not interrupt them, but accepted a dance with Robert Baker who, l later learned, had reached the top in aeronautical engineering. He told me that Richard Good and Franklin Seifert had also achieved honors as engineers in the western part of the country. Our dance ended too quickly, for it seemed Bob was well informed about the success of our classmates. However, as we returned to my table, Richard Doerrman announced that Geraldine Wentzel, who had just returned from a concert tour of Europe, would render a piano solo. After Gerry's number the orchestra started our own Russell Collin's tune, which had claimed first place on the Hit Parade for the past ten consecutive weeks. lncidentally Russ' band was one of the top-notch bands of the day. Crossing the floor to meet my next partner, Theodore House-r, an expert forest ranger, I met Hampton Pullis, and his lovely wife, the former Mildred Spies. But they were only one of the many happily married couples there, for Dorothy Wunsch, Ger- aldine Trupp, Marguerite Sensenig, Mary Krick, Ioyce Adams, Shirley Dillon, Agnes Gehr and Betty Davis were all there with their respective husbands. The merry chatter at a table near the orchestra told me that the girls from our art class were there. To be sure they were, for Betty Berger, professor of art at the Univer- sity of New York, Christine Kummer, head dietician at Walter Reed Hospital, Fay Scheetz, physical education instructor at Mary Washington College, Va., Adelaide Griesemer, art teacher at Reading High School, and Marie Leber, a kindergarten teacher, were all gathered around a table happily discussing old times. At a nearby table William lohnston, who owned a large mink farm in Alaska, and Charles Smith, the Yankee's star third baseman, recaptured the spirit of their youth in 46 1944 CLASS PROPHECY lContinuedl their reminiscing with lack Vanino and Homer Schonour, two skilled airplane me- chanics. I was very much surprised to see Francis Waldman, an officer in the Navy, Lieu- tenant Russell Miller of the U. S. Air Corps, and Carl Readinger of the U. S. Marines, in full uniform. Apparently they had all seen action in the last war and were still serving their country. Each of their chests was fairly covered with medals and l was proud to note that each wore the Purple Heart. My next partner, Norman Moyer, was also in uniform, for he informed me that he was a commercial pilot and was scheduled to leave in a few hours on a routine flight to San Francisco. As we danced, we passed jean Simmon, secretary to lawyer Paul Ruth, and Richard Schroll, an expert carpenter. With them were Barry Boyles, a famed criminal lawyer and Paul Riegel who was a skilled machinist. They were, as was every- one else, laughing and chatting gaily. just then the music stopped and a call was issued for Dr. Hampton Pullis, who was wanted immediately at the hospital. Hearing a feminine voice behind me say, That's a doctor's life-l know, l turned and saw a group of nurses gathered around a nearby table. They were Betty Salino, Mary lane Gerhart, Madelyn I-loffman, lean Bergstrom, Esther Shoup, Fanny lane Eitnier, Grace Minnich, and Ellen Ohlsen, most of whom had seen foreign service during the war. V Theodore Reed, who l later learned was owner of the Reed lron Works of Pittsburgh was my next partner. As we danced past a table surrounded by a dozen curly-haired girls, we recognized lane Marsh, who Theodore told me was his private secretary. janet Benson, known to the movie-going public as Mari designer of costumes, and Dr. Doris Landis of the Ford Company were there too. Near the door l noticed Betty Lutz, well-known columnist, busily taking notes, and pushing through the crowd toward her, l met janet Kramer and Anna Raezer who told me they were teaching school and enjoying life to the utmost. When l finally reached Betty, who, by the way, had contributed much to the post-war reconstruction of the world, she told me that only three persons were absent from the reunion. They were Iosephine Crossman, traveling companion to Mrs. l. R. Harvell, wife of the iron magnet, Dr. julia Doremus, at present engaged in further study in Europe, and Harold Bassler, who was steward aboard the jefferson, the world's largest ocean liner. Presently we were joined by three of Betty's ardent admirers - Betty Balthaser, Doris Bowers, and Lois Sturgis-all secretaries to well-known business men. We had little time to talk, for soon the signal for dinner was sounded and, hungry as usual, we all trouped into the spacious dining hall. For a moment we were dazed by its splendor, but splendor can- not hold its own long in competition with food when the class of 44 is around and we all sought our places at the long table. My neighbors who did justice to the feast be- fore them were Mary Ann Beaver, a commercial pilot, and Richard Conrad, a skilled electrician. Across the table was john Davies, who Mary Ann told me was a mechani- cal engineer. Besides him sat Mae Coldren, Professor of French at Long lsland University 47 Wilsouzarz CLASS PROPI-IECY CContinuedj and Bobert Weitzel, winner of the recent golf championship. It was like being back in school again, for we laughed and chattered and reminisced. After dinner I met Betty Strunk, a secretary to M. R. Iarell, steel manufacturer, and she informed me the famous Vonnie, creator of leading women's fashions, was none other than our own Yvonne Keller, and that june Putt had become her private secretary. Arthur Boyd, my next partner, came toward us and with him was his competent secretary, Dorothy Kirst. Leaving Dorothy and Betty to discuss secretarial problems, Ar- thur and I started to dance, but we met Donald Reber, a mechanical engineer and stop- ped to chat for a moment. After leaving Donald, we resumed our dancing and Art told me that he had realized his ambition and was establishing air routes. Before we knew it, we had reached the orchestra and joined the group gathered there. William Rumpf, Paul Eshenaur, and Clair Rhoads, all skilled mechanics, were reviving the old moron jokes of our school days and Anna Oxenrider, personnel manager of Wana- maker's in New York, Lorraine Moyer and Margaret Boyer, both secretaries, were apt- preciating them to the utmost. Wondering where my escort had disappeared to, I began to look for him. I found him finally with Lieutenants Herbert Bosselman and Eugene Reifein of the U. S. Marines. They were surrounded by Ruth Gressley, Mildred Bechtel, Anna I-Iassler, and Hilda Mayer, all secretaries, who told me that they had just been hearing some wild tales about the Marines in the last war. V After dancing the last dance with my escort and attempting to store within the re- cesses of my heart the expression on the face of each of my classmates, I went to get my coat. The chatter and din of the powder room reminded me of the shower room at dear old Wilson and as I crossed to the mirror, I met Arlene I-Ioyer, owner of an exclusive gift shop on Fifth Avenue, and Betty Fisher, an artist, discussing their evening with Mae Palm who was a dietitian at a large army hospital, and Bernice Schneck, an ex- pert hairdresser. It seemed that only yesterday all these girls were gathered in the shower room of our Alma Mater laughing and chattering merrily, but the grim fact that actually ten years had elapsed had to be faced and I wondered as I stood there how many times we would be together again. As we drove home, I watched the rain trickle down the cab windows and perhaps for the first time realized that we were all like those little rain drops, slowly trickling through life, some growing large and therewith becoming famous, while others of us were destined to live our time, then vanish, and be forgotten.
