However, after the first assignments, first assembly, and the Great Reading Fair, one began to hear the following: lt doesn't seem as it we had a vacation. Soon everyone settled down and prepared for another year's work. the memories of summer still fresh in many OCTOBER tober 5th found the seniors in their Sunday best to greet the photographer of the yearbook pictures. How popular were mirrors, combs, and make-up that dayl During the following week, the main subjects for current events talks, public speeches, and general conversation were the thrills, stunts and lanes witnessed at the dedication of the Reading Municipal Hirport. On September l2th and l3th, the I P Spectator campaign and contest began. Great suspense and anxiety came with the arrival of the seniors' pictures on October l6th. Each senior vowed he was better looking than the picture would have you think. There was much re- ff t d d th joicing with the announcement of a day's holiday on October 20th, Members of the Spectator sta at en e e Pennsylvania School Press Plssociation convention in Reading High School on October 27th and 28th and enrolled in h interesting and helpful courses, but were sure to be back for the Halloween Dance featuring Iohnny Iones and his Orc es- tra the night of October 27. November lst brought a school full of red and white, and enthusiasm and school spirit, for it was traditional Color Day at Wilson. On November l7th the faculty was given its opportunity to shine in its presentation of the play Double Door. Rnd shine it did, for the play was a great success. Thanksgiving vacation, ' ' ' ' ' ' d f tur- that is Roosevelt's Thanksgiving vacation, began at ll,3U Pt. M. on November Z2nd. The Thanksgiving ance, ea November 24th. November ended with a very interesting address ing Iori Weiss and his Clef Club Orchestra, was held by the Syrian-born Hmerican lecturer, Salom Rizk. Hfter the address many students kept Mr. Rizk busy supplying them with autographs. DECEMBER Do your Christmas shopping early and newspapers filled with pictures of Santa Claus taken from every angle were h f l ' sufficient evidence to show that December was here and Christmas was on its way. H roomful of opeu seniors assembled in lOl on December 5th for the tryouts for the senior class play. The cast was announced two days later. Pit t' n December 6th, the class decided with a unanmous vote to dedicate the Wilsonicxn to Mrs. Mildred R. Ice. a mee ing o The senior German class enjoyed an evening of German entertainment at Newmanstown on December l3th. Those who went to Newmanstown report that a member of the audience was as amusing as the German play. The poetic urge was 39 - released by seniors in writing ballads in English class on December 18th. Fantastic imaginations were revealed, and this led many to believe some seniors suffer from horrible nightmares. School ended appropriately December 22nd with a religious pageant given by the Glee Club and the string ensemble. The conclusion of school activities for December was the Christmas Dance December 23rd, with music by Bill Zink and his Colonial Serenaders. The audience probably will never forget the manner in which Down by the Old Mill Stream was rendered. The debaters reached a milestone on Ianuary 26th when the trial debates were given to decide who should be the final eight debaters. Hn experiment was tried on Ianuary 24th and Slst when the Iunior High's and Senior High's singing ability was recorded for posterity. So ended the first month of 1940. FEBRUBRY The month of the blizzard!!! Students readily welcomed a two-day vacation on February l5th and l6th because of the snow's having drifted roads shut. But returning to the beginning of the month we find teachers and the co-editors of the Wilsonicm in a quandary trying to figure out who's who on group pictures. The culmination of weeks of hard work was achieved when the band presented a concert on February 8th. Hll this despite the handicap of Mr. Loos's illness several days before the concert. The debaters' second milestone came on February l9, with the trial debate, and on February 23 the debaters reached their final objective, the county debate. The question was Resolved. That the Federal Govern- ment Should Own and Operate the Railroads. The affirmative team lost to Birdsboro at home and the negative team won at Shillington. incidentally, the debaters theme song was I've Been Wukking on the Railroads. The senior debaters, after two months of arguing and more arguing, went back to English class and found that the lesson under consideration was a chapter on How to Hrgue! The senior high school heard an excellent speaker in the personage of Dr. Grafflin on February 27. He seemed to leave a deep impression on everyone with his talk on the achievement of success. February closed with one extra day lsince it is leap year! and a night of one-act plays, Millie, the Farmerettef' Carew's Hobby, The Silver Candlesticks, and Saint lane, presented by the senior and junior high Dramatic Clubs. MHRCH ' To be or not to be a formal commencement- that was the question decided on March Sth, and the result was an almost unanimous vote for the formal type of commencement. On March l9th, Rumpelstiltskin was presented in the auditorium under the sponsorship of the West Lawn Story Tellers' League. On Easter Morning a brave few faced the cold winds to attend the Easter Dawn Services held at six o'clock in the lobby of the school. .HPRIL Sprechen Sie Deutsch? lf you didn't, you were probably lonesome Plpril Sth, the night of German entertainment that included a motion picture Konzert in Tirol. With these words our fair May Queen was crowned at the commencement of the annual May Day festivities. On May llth Wilson was well represented at the yearly observance of Field Day at Kutz- town State Teachers College. SOCCER Under the supervision of Coach Walter Risley, the 1939-40 soccer team passed another successful season with five victories, three losses, and two tied games. Two weeks after school started in September, the boys started practicing to prepare for the keen competition offered by the other teams of the league. Led by Captain Walter Griesemer and other veterans of last season's team, the boys met Mohnton on September l9, for the first league game of the season. Fllthough this game ended in defeat for our boys, they went on with their fighting spirit to win four and tie two games. The team suffered a defeat at Wyomissing on October l9, but finished the season successfully by defeating Wyomissing in a canceled game on our own field. - We, the class of 4O, sincerely wish every success to Wilson's future heroes of the turf. 44 SCHEDULE Date Opponent Place Sept. We think the Prexies made a fine showing against the stronger teams and keener competition of the Central Division. Our record of nine won and nine lost attests to this fact and gives us high hopes for a champion- ship team next year, since we will have an almost all-ve-teran team for the season of '40-'4l. This .500 percentage might have been con- siderably higher but for the unfortunate injury to l-Iouser, a very capable guard, since several of these games were lost by one or two points, and a first-string guard can often turn a close game from a defeat into a victory. Coach Risley and the team deserve our whole-hearted support for their fine work. While our team has not won the basketball championship, we think they have won a greater victory. They are all champions of sportsmanship which, in the last analysis, is the prize to covet. VHRSITY BHSKETBHLL TERM Standing, left to right-Mr. Fritz, R. Spies, G. Scholwin, W. Wessner, K.
