Chemistry. Physics. Science Gettysburg College, Millers- ville State Teachers Collegep Bucknell Universityp University of Pennsylvania Extension, Penn State College Last autumn one of the most popular individuals in Wilson's history took his leave of our circle. This man-principal, in- structor, friend-had endeared himself to the student body, and to our class in particular, by his Wisdom, ability, understanding, and personalityp so that it was in the midst of smiles and tears that he bade us farewell. In return for fond memories We say, Thank you and farewell, Mr. Roy W. Hammef' Page O Language and History IN THE CLHSSROOMS . 'The governing body of Wilson High School is composed of twenty-seven teachers, eight advisers of senior high classes, eleven advisers of junior high groups, and eight teaching junior and senior high subjects. Two of the junior high advisers are located in the West Wyomissing Grade School where they are acting as instructors of the seventh grade pupils stationed in that building. The faculty this year welcomed two new teachers, Mr. William Keim and Mr. Willard Fritz, both capable teachers of subjects in the science field. Important also in the year's changes was the wise selection of Mr. Noble Fritz as the new faculty adviser for the Hthletic Hssociation, and the appointing of Mr. Benjamin Weidman as the high school's new principal. Continuing the policy established by that of the previous years, the teachers held a meeting one afternoon each month where several teachers presided over panel discussions on current problems. Many things have been accomplished during the year, but their most significant action seems to be the planning of the school's hand book. Page 10 The 1939 WILSONIHN Science and Mathematics MRS. This being the most popular sport at Wilson, a large squad re- ported to Coach Risley. Hfter a few weeks of intensive practice the team shaped up in fine condition for the opening game. Led by the inspirational leadership of Captain Hayden Sensenig, the team boasted a veteran squad. The boys started off in fine style, boasting a nine game Winning streak before receiving a setback. Hfter receiving two setbacks at the hands of the Fllumni and Wyomissing, the team began another drive which finally led them to the western divisional championship for the fourth consecutive year. The team then competed in the playoff for the Berks County Championship at Northwest lunior High School. Before the playoff the team was shocked by the news that its Coach, Walter P. Risley, who had led them to three suc- cessive divisional championships and one county champion- ship, had to undergo an appendicitis operation. However, Leroy K. Lauck capably continued in Coach Risley's place. It was in the first game that a weary but jubilant team defeated a fight- ing Birdsboro team 28 to 23. Three nights later the team received a startling setback from Kutztown by the score of 41 to 33, thus ending another successful season on the hardwood courts. Composed of two divisions, Eastern and Western, our team was entered in the western cate- gory along with teams representing Womelsdorf, Wernersville, Ontelaunee, and Wyomissing. H good chance for supremacy was accorded our team since three 1938 varsity members of the squad, namely, Captain lames Rodgers, Fllfred Killian, and Paul Fisher, who also played first, second, and third singles, were joined by four promising racqueteers, Donald Seidel, Ralph Fleming, Mark Reber, and Roscoe l-louser. Playing an eight match schedule, our squad played all their home games away, since no facilities in the form of courts were available. Under the capable guidance of Coach William Brumbach, this year's team has hopes of reaching the county playoffs and ultimately being crowned county championsl THBLE TENNIS SCHEDULE Hpril Wilson at Wernersville Hpril Wilson at Womelsdorf Hpril Wilson at Ontelaunee Hpril Open May Wilson at Wyomissing May Wilson at Wernersville May Wilson at Womelsdorf May Wilson at Ontelaunee May Open May Wilson at Wyomissing ir This school year of 1938-39 saw a further enlargement of Wil- son High Schools sports program with the addition of a table tennis team to its athletic roster. Following the enthusiastic support of intra-mural tournaments, a team composed of the cream of Wilson's many participants in this sport was entered in the Reading Senior Table Tennis League. Under the leader- ship of its able coach, William Brumbach, the team made a splendid showing against the senior members of the league and twice decisively defeated Muhlenberg, the only other high school team in the league. The team was composed of five members: Paul Fisher, Captain and winner of the l938-39 table tennis tournament, Wilbur 1-laupt, runner-up in the tournament, Roscoe 1-louser, 1937-38 table tennis champ, Mark Reber, and Frank Stevenson. Playing on a home to home basis the team completed the following schedule, winning 6 and losing 1U matches, thus placing fifth in the league. With no losses through graduation, high hopes are held for this team in the future.
