Penn State College , ,W ,Ks Y: 5' ,yv .f vt, , 5 5 - I The Flmerican public school system is often referred to as the cradle of democracy and is essential to its preservation. You have had the opportunity of enjoying its manifold facilities tor at least twelve years of your life. You are about to engage in life's major activities amid a swiftly changing social scene, wherein the populace of the civilized nations of the world must choose between dictatorship and democracy. Democracy assumes the right of the individual to participate in the determination of the Way in which he is to function in his social contacts. Hctive responsibility on the part of the common citizen is necessary and conducive to his own well-being. In the long run, humanity will work out the most satisfying way of social living if granted an opportunity to do so. Hs a result of your schooling, may you have developed a wholesome Christian personality, with compassion for the less fortunate and the will to do and give the best that is in you towards a higher and better form of socialized democracy. Pilthough the affirmative team was defeated at home by Muhlenberg, reputedly the strctngest debating combination in Berks County, nevertheless the graceful acceptance of defeat which its members exhibited must be admired. From the standpoint of victory, the negative team was more successful in that it defeated a strong Boyertown aggregation. l l Karl Eisele, lanet Kitzmiller, Dennis Strawbridge, and Kenneth Gehret, composed the affirmative team. The negative team consisted of Lucille Sherman, Zieber Stetler, Bruce Owens, and Virginia Stephan. H new interscholastic ruling required only one critic judge to appraise the verbal battle. The question for debate Was Resolved, that the several states should adopt a unicameral system of 1egislation. Faculty advisers, Mrs. Helen Starke and Mr. Leroy Lauck, rendered able assistance, l May Wilson students always be appreciative of thb admirable qualities displayed by their debatersl 1938 Qggj Ufilsonian l ji, K BHND Director Drum Major - FLUTE-Guy Berger '38, Zieber Stetler '38. The players and substi ff. The 1937-38 soccer season began with the turnoult ot a large group of X 4 . . i ' f . tutes were picked, trained, and drilled by Coach Walter Risley. The ma- A M jority oi the newly picked soccer team members were of last year's team, and the season's aspects appeared favorable. , f Throughout every game, regardless of Whether they Won or lost, the school and team dis- played the best type of sportsmanship. Because nlany of the teams that Wilson opposed were exceptionally skillful in their playing, Wilson needed more than skill with which to win the game. They needed a fighting spirit, faith, and loyalty for their school. The team undoubtedly had all of these qualities and won many a game because of them. Wilson is noted tor its fighting spirit. , The soccer season was a triumph because the team lost only one game throughout the entire season. Rlthough not successful in winningl the Western Division Championship, the team was a splendid one, and the class of '38 extends best wishes to the coming soccer teams. It was a large order to fill the vacancies left by last year's graduates, but there was a great amount of new material with which to work. During the first half of the basketball season Wilson defeated all rivals, with the exception of three non-league opponents. Throughout the second half of the season the team kept up its fighting spirit, and concluded the season with four- teen victories and three losses, the latter suffered at the hands of the non-league opponents, Birdsboro, Mohnton, and Muhlenberg. Wilson Was the only undefeated team in the Western Division and Was therefore the representative in the county playoffs. Many rooters and fans thought the team would advance and attain more honors than did previous basketball tearns, and still other pessimists believed that Wilson did not have as good a team as that of the year previous. These disputed opinions were settled when we played Birdsboro for the Berks County Championship. The Wilson Hi team found the fighting spirit of the players from Birdsboro too much for them, and thus Wilson was eliminated. Every student of Wilson High School was proud of the team which Mr. Risley had developed and of the pluck displayed by the team in every game. We hope that future teams Will be able to boast of the playing ability, sportsmanship, and fighting spirit shown by the team of 1937-38. lVl'lS07L'iCl1L Q78j 1938 SEASON Players Position Hiram Kochel Hrchie Strauser lohn Kline Sherwood Mervine Robert Reift Hayden Sensenig Wilmer 1-Iepner Walter Kopp Elwood Staudt William Strauser QQQCDPf1'11'n'1:1OO Walter P. Students seem to realize the importance of baseball as a varsity sport. It is indeed one of the big three sports at our Fllma Mater. This season enthusiasm is soaring to a new high, not only in the ranks of the players, but among the many Wilson fans and boosters. Iudging from the speed and ability displayed by the team in practice, we are certain the group will be a very serious threat to the new opponents in the Cen- tral Division. This will be a new experience for Wilson to play in the Central Division, but with the support of every loyal Wilsonian and the fine coaching of Mr. Walter P. Risley, we can look forward to more victories on the diamond. PLRYERS I-1. Strauser, pitcher, R. Metzler, pitcher, H. Sonon, pitcher, W. Strauser, catcher, S. Hettinger, center fielder, K.
