Facets Of Our Language Comprehension comes first - of this book, this play, this poem - a composite of our lan- guage. A building together into passages, passages into a complete coherence - a thought examined by this verb, this noun - the usage of our language. This four year sequence of English provides a continuity - the facts, natures, customs learned before can be reapplied. The genres of literature are studied in the tenth grade, and this informa- tion is brought to bear in the eleventh and twelfth grades, when an exclusive emphasis is placed on all elements of first American, then English literature. The other aspects of English merely become more complex and intellectually demanding as the years pro- gress. Seeking to develop the composition, writing is encouraged with both discipline and creativity. By developing relationships and discrimination, comprehension is achieved. 27
