In 1950, the clubs of the county sold chances on a calfg lilson club won the calf with one of the chances bought by Irs. Elsie Peters. The club sold the calf,and added the money to its funds.. Later the club organized a pig club un- der the.Sears plan. In '50-'51, they formed a handicraft club, sponsored by Hrs. Reecie Neavillg and a hunting and fishing club which, among its numerous activities, ,sponsored the presentation of ll films on wildflife conservation, to the entire student body. The club made great strides in their health ef- forts. In coope ation with its leaders Vida Prevett and Joyce Mathis, and with the county health department, it spon- sored a community-wide water-testing project, school dental and vision-test- ing programs, and an altogether enlivf ened participation of the school and community in county healthjprojects... The music department was organized to reach every pupil in school. The rhy- thm'band was reorganized, grew, and was highly acclaimed. Piano teachers were Bessie Carder, Ruby Wilson, Opal Shaw Patsy Jones and June Thomas,1ocallygand Mrs. Anne Danley and Mrs. Carder of Hen- ryetta. In 1951, Miss Lois Spears or- ganized a toneete band whichp received enthusiastic response. Teachers associ- ated with vocal music training were ---- Mrs. Carder, Mrs. Wilson, Arvel Bailey and Agnes Palmer. Among the student ac- companists at the piano'were:Joyce Mid- dleton, Joyce Mathis, Patsy Jones, June Thomas, Calella Kennedy,Carolyn Little. The School Lunch system was begun in 1946-47, in cooperation with the federal government. Sponsored by the Board of Education, with R.E.lilson as authorized representative, Urs. Wilson as manager, and classroom teachers as assistants, the program grew and pros- pered. Irs. Lllla Jones and Hrs. ack- son cooked the first three yearsg Mrs. Rosa Hodges replaced Irs. Jackson, and cooked during .49-51. lr. Batterton and students were assistants to the cooks The cost of operating the program for a typical year, 1949-50, was S50l8.?0.The income was f5208.05. The new cafeteria was built in the summer of 1949, mostly with local labor, with Mr. Charley Chap- man as head carpenter. The oommunity's ladies' clubs spon- sored a cemetery-care program. To raise expenses, they banquets, two and held a pie money for this and other served the Junior-senior master-teacher banquets, supper which netted 3295. They added I acres to the cemetery plot, fenced it, landscaped it, purchased a power mower, built a house to store it in, and began an intensive program of cemetery upkeep Independent basketball teams were organized, and annual tournaments were held in both sports. Among the commun- ity leaders in independent sports were: Claud Laughlin, Tom Jackson, Dan wlieen Perry Palmer, Ira McElhannon, and Mr.E. W. Batterton. At school Mr. Wilson's drivers' training course became an integral part of the curriculum. This was paid for mostly with tournament funds, but in part by 4-H club fund. The commercial department changed policy of THE TIGER, the school pepcri to be published when needed by lchoc or community, rather than once each 6 weeks as had been customary. The dept. also' published 4 year-books,the first the school had printed ln at least 10 years. Mrs. lllson was the teacher con- .nected with this work. A comprehensive athletic program was continued. Due to small size of the high school not mmny trophies have been won during this time by the high school However both boys and girls' teams have been strong, and widely acclaimed for good sportsmanshlp.'l'1he high schoolboys were Conference winners ln 50 and in 51 A program begun in 46 stressing grade school participation in athletics, and scheduling a time, place, and coach for daily practice for students in grades 4-8, culminated in 49-50 and 50-51 with winning teams which added more than 20 trophies to.the school's collection.... An electric scoreboard was purchased in 493 the bleachers were remodeled in 59- 51 by Mr. Chapman and Charles. During this period the gym has been re-painted given a new roof, floors were resanded, and the gym um erment a thorough clean, lng. The dressing rooms were repaired and redecorated. An electric pump and running water facilities were installed in l946,The same year three new bus chasses were purchasedg beginning with 47-48 a-new- bus-a-year policy was followed out and in 59-51 the oldest bus used was going on its third year of use.In '49 a three bus garage with a shop store room was built. The gasoline supply pump was re moved out of the parking area, near to the garage. The classrooms were wired in 48-49. In 49-50 the classrooms were given new ceilings, repaired plaster M complete redecorationg pastel colors were used, chosen by the teachers. The old gas pipes were replaced by larger ones, and new stoves were purchased for all classrooms. A pump was installed in the basement to get rid of over-flow. New'concrete walks were built aroundthe school plant. Teacherages were repaired and redecorated.One received a new foun dationg two rec'd. new rooms, and a new rpom was added to the.Janitor's house.. All teacherages received new paint jobs A telephonelwas installed in the school and an extension in the Supt.'s house.. The system used formerly had been aban- doned. The trees on the campus were pruned, a new cellar was bu1lt.A slide and new teeterboards were added to the playground equipment. Additional land on the campus was cleaned off,smoothed and made into baseball diamond.A power mower was purchased and a year 'round plan followed for upkeep of grounds. In 51 the Supt.'s garage was enlarged, to care for the drivers' training car which was purchased by Supt. Wilson. In 1946 new tables were added to the commercial roomgln 1950-51 new fur- niture was added to the Jr.-High Dept. --first of a long-range plan of refur- nishing all rooms gradually.An old bus was converted into a truck for school use, and a tank for hauling water was purchased. During this period the high school library was recatalogued and re-paired under the supervision of .Agnes Palmer and Ruby Wilson. About 250 new books were added. Three new sets of reference books were purchased for high school, and one new set for each grade room 3-8 The depleted grade libraries were re- plenished, and supplementary readers were bought for each grade. Teaching aids such as maps, charts, globes were purchased for most classes.New Venetian blinds were purchased for some rooms, old ones were repaired. Each su mer the school furniture was cleaned and var- nished, the blackboards cleaned and re- painted. Mr. Batterton made new bulle- tin boards for the classrooms, where student work was constantly displayed. School tradition was adhered to strictly in the sponsoring of the an- nual Carnlval, King and Queen contests, the Imas.tree and pie supper for the en- tire communityg the Jr.-Sr. banquets... Freshmen initiation, Sth E high school Bac. a Com. exercises. New customs es- tablished lnclude the sacred Xmas. tree pageant with 60 voice chorus,al1-school open-house nights, the week-long Senior trips e New Ball Suits were bought for the high school and grade teams. Red kwhite were grade colors. H.S. girls ordered were grade colors. H. S. girls ordered red suits, black warm-up pants, in 1951. Athletic coaches were Earl Carter, Elsie Peters, Bessie Carder, R. E. Ill- son, H.I. Shaw, Arvel Bailey, and Ches- ter Hendrix. Board members during this period: Lark Lane, Tom Jackson, L. H. Prevett, Clayton Thomas, Fred VanCleave, Claud Laughlin As we Judge such things, the chur- ches at Wilson have grown in number and in strength. A Wilson resident, Marvin McElhannon is pastor of the Assembly of God Church at Sharp.
