The freshmen eagerly searched for that S510 treasure and three freshmen girls found it. The first high school dances of the year were eagerly attended by the freshmen. XX'hen we first got our report cards, we realized that high school was not all fun but that hard work was necessary. That year we were graded by quartile rank. As sophomores we felt wise in the ways of Wilson. Now we had priority over those gullible freshmen. In w r w 30 MEMCRIES The things we did, the events we planned, and the activities we participated in were all a part of our high school days at Wilson. When we recall these instances, certain things seem to project more than others. In our first year at Wilson the kind advice and help- ful suggestions of the upper classmen were greatly appreciated by the gullible freshmen. Many a boy can recall being helpfully assisted to a cold, wet shower in gym class. As freshmen we eagerly entered in to the extra-curricular activities. The boys eagerly joined B-squad teams to gain experience in preparation for the A-squads. The girls joined the G.A.A. and Pep Club to cheer the boys on. We will never forget that football game against Johnson when we won 32 to 26. It was our first Homecoming victory in many years. There were many other firsts that year. For the first the fall the girls practiced and vied for positions on the B-squad cheerleading team. The boys would drag out of bed at 6 in the morning to practice on the B-squad teams. K.O.M.A. was our secret slogan for Homecom- ing but after the game it wasn't a secret any more. Everyone knew then that we had Knocked Out Me- chanic Arts . As sophomores we got our first taste of Shakespeare. In biology dissection processes were being learned at the expense of those poor little frogs. In our two Sno-Daze the G.A.A. had a chance to show their skill in broomball against the hockey team fwith re- vised rules, of coursej. In our junior year we first met together as a class to plan money-making projects for the junior-Senior Prom. We put on a class play consisting of three one-act melo- dramas. Everyone took part in some way, even if they MEMORIES were not acting in She Wfas Only A Farmer's Daughter lor Bessie, The Bandits Beautiful Baby or The Great lWestern Melodrama . We ordered our class rings early and got them at Christmas. We broke the tradition and jchose oval rings. Who will ever forget winning both jthe city and district championships in basketball? That lyear Mr. Fitzharris, everybody's favorite teacher, sud- jdenly passed away. W'e all learned that classroom learn- .ing was fun with Fitz. With the A-B-C marking system, ,competition for those A's was just plain rough. The 'year ended in a Polynesian Paradise at the North Star Ballroom. juniors and seniors danced around a fountain 'filled with orchids from Hawaii. For those lanning to attend college, a special day- was set aside or talk with the counselors from many colleges and universities. Among the many things learned by the seniors that year was to follow up and get the back- round of all current affairs. After a year of planning nd saving, the trip to Wfashington was a big success md enjoyed by all who went. Remembering all the Jlanning for the Prom in our junior year, it was a Jleasure to have this year's juniors plan it in our honor. Jn Senior Honor Day the seniors were rewarded for jheir achievements in high school. To the strains of 'Pomp and Circumstance our high school days were rnded. When we received our high school diplomas this xecame a firm realization. . ..'. if W a 'H if 'P 'Sz 0 63 111' Y is ll I 5 l This was our last year and who would ever have thought it could come so fast. Vife exchanged pictures and studied hard in a final attempt to raise grades. The seniors also became very active at activities, knowing it was their last year. Can we girls ever forget when the boys invaded the Pep Club? We Wrung Out Wash in our Homecoming game, 33 to 6. However, this wasn't our only victory! PAUL CITY CHAMPIONS .31 45' Chuck Woodbury Co-Captain lst Team All-City FitzHarris Award Winner - 65 points Back The Wilson Redmen, in their first year as City Champs, won eight out of the nine conference games. To kick off the football season, with Isaacson, Clark, and Woodbury scoring, the Redmen won 18-8 against Central. Woodbury scored 13 points against Harding, while Wilson kept a 13-7 lead with five minutes left in the game. The Knights, racing against time, scored 7 points in the last 45 seconds for a heartbreaking 14-13 loss. Wilson knocked over the previously unbeaten Humboldt Indians, with March the hero of a 13-0 victory, throwing the city conference race wide open. With a touchdown each for Woodbury, Haas, and Clark, the Wilson eleven swept over the Murray Pilots, 18-0, winning their third conference game, In the beginning six minutes of the Monroe-Wilson game, the Red- men already had a 14-0 lead on two scores by Woodbury. At the game's end, the final score was 27-7, the last two touchdowns being scored by the passing combination of Clark to March. The Redmen breezed over Washington for a victorious 33-6 Home- coming game. The scoring was accomplished by Woodbury, Isaacson, and March. As Wilson trampled johnson, 35-7, we clinched a tie for the St. Paul City Conference championship. Haas, Clark, March, and Isaacson were the heroic pointmakers. The most important game of the season, the Mechanics contest finally decided the City championship. Mechanics, needing a win to share the title, bowed to the Redmen by a 27-13 score. Showing what champions they are, the Redmen played their finest game, taking sole possession of the conference title. The Twin City game came on November 12. The Redmen entered the Twin City game against Washburn and, on a day when everything went wrong for Coach Benepe's eleven, the Mill City crew walked off with a 63-0 victory. As the lights dimmed and the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstanceu were heard, the candidates - Bonnie Deutschlander and Glen Knip- penberg, Pam Ferlas and Daryl Runion, Mary McEvoy and Doug Ramseth, Janet Haven and junior March, Barb Solum and Mike Horton, Yvonne Godbout and Harold Isaacson, and Phylis jenkins and jon Markuson - slowly started their procession to the stage. The climax of the assembly was the crowning of the Homecoming Royalty. The game that afternoon did justice to our Homecoming slogan of Wring out Wash, as the Redmen triumphed over Wfashington 33-6. The dance featuring johnny and the Galaxies, concluded the Homecoming Festivities. Childhood sweethearts, George and Emily, are wed in town church. Professor Willard summarizes the history 100 of Grover's Corners. OUR TOWN Our Town, Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning play, was produced by the Onstagers under the direction of Mr. D. F. Morrison, on December 6 and 7, 1962. Our Town, which depicts the life of a New Hampshire village, and represents any town anywhere, is different from most plays in one respect. The stage is void of any scenery and only a minimum amount of properties are needed to con- vey the theme to the audience. The Stage Manager CMichael Herhertb informally outlines the history of the town and something of the character of its citizens. Then he carries you into the houses of the Gibbs and Vifebb families, substantial homes containing substantial folks. Dr. Gibbs CThomas Mattsonj and Mrs. Gibbs flilizabeth Thompsonj are the parents of George and Rebecca Gibbs CHarold Kempka and Eva Dinsmorej. Mr. Webb fRichard Nelsonj and Mrs. Wlebb UoAnne jensenj are the parents of Wfally and Emily Wfebb fDaniel Woodbury and Georgia Gesej. Other characters are the milkman fliruce Hausauerj, Professor Willartl Uames Svardahlj, the undertaker Qohn Iversonl, the town constable CGary Carlsonj, and the town's people Games Spawn, Marjorie Pearson, Nancy Reed, Bonnie Arentj. During their childhood, George and Emily are playmates and their later lives are woven together as neighbors' lives are likely to be. As they grow older, they pass from an embarrassed interest in one another, into a state of mature love. George and Emily marry, but their happiness is short-livecl for Emily dies in child-birth. She is taken to the town cemetery and, despite the warning pleas of the dead, she re-lives one clay of her life. To her dismay she realizes how people are blind and ignorant of life's worth. Day begins with breakfast at the Gibbses. Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Webb chat while shelling peas. PCLYNESIAN PARADISE The 1962 Junior-Senior Prom was held in the Student Union Ballroom on the St. Paul Campus May 4, 1962. The ballroom was transformed into a Polynesian Paradise through the use of palm trees, fish nets, a fountain, and hundreds of baby orchids shipped from Hawaii. The junior class, under the direction of Mr. Berendt, planned the night's festivities. Everyone promenaded to the music of the Saints band in the tradi- tional Grand March headed by the senior and junior class officers. Shortly after noon most of the student body adjourned to the realm of Boreas at Como Park for three hours of fun and frolic, skating, toboganning, and following the mysterious clues in search of the hidden treasure. In spite of 10 below temperatures, no casualties were reported and the S15 treasure button was found by freshman, Craig Holmstrom. In order to pull Livonia out of its financial predicament, Count Berezowski organizes a raffle. As is the custom, the king holds the winning ticket. By accident the Count writes a love message to Irma of the Grand Opera Ballet on the back of the ticket. The Count's attempts to regain the ticket lead to confusion and merriment. Steve Lockwood portrays Count Berezowski with Mary Anderson and Diane Kammerer playing female leads as Irma and the gypsy, respectively. Brent Collins, Kenneth Hoff, Nancy Reed, Bruce Hausauer, XY'ayne Lind- quist, Jo Ann Arnold, Vivian XX'eeks, Jerry Berreth, Milton Ericksen, Renee Zarembinski, and joel Pilgrim also appear in the production. Q3' FACULTY Congratulations, seniors, upon having completed your high school program. One of the functions of a high school education is preparation for further education. To succeed in the world of work today one must have skills to sell. Before you can get the job you want you must go through a period of job preparation. You must make the best possible use of your potential skills. The responsibility for your further education is in part the responsibility of the community, but above all, it is the responsi- bility of the student himself. Try to prepare yourself to be a competent, mature individual in the many phases of adult life that you will be expected to meet in your home, in your job, in your social life, in your life as a patriotic citizen in the local community and in the nation and in the world. The past three years have placed me in a position to evaluate the Class of 1963. In my judgment, this class has the potential to make a distinguished contribution to the welfare of our total com- munity. You have in your ranks a great many outstanding students. Good citizenship has characterized the school careers of the vast majority of you. If you will continue to build upon the foundation of your Wilson experience, and set your levels of aspiration at a reasonably high level, the world will know you, as individually and collectively, successful people.
