Q 04? Q N gb-3' 6 ww LM QQ? X 3252 V 136 Q k W K THE LOG PRESENTED BY WILSON HIGH SCHOOL ST PAUL, MINNESOTA T951 DEDICATICDN E. E. Doc Raymond, Grand Master of Music , came to Wilson in l942. We at Wilson are deeply indebted to Doc for his superb work with the Wilson choirs and the snappy Redmen band. Mr. Raymond has been a leader in coordinating many of the activities of Wilson with community life in St. Paul. He was the first conductor ot the massed chor- uses at the Municipal Christmas Choral Pageants. He has brought great tame to Wilson halls with his work on the St, Paul Winter Carnivals during the past few years. His work on our own Wilson High School car- nivals and operettas has been successful year after year. Our hats are oft to Doc - and to him we dedicate our l95l Log. Those of us who graduated from high school after the beginning of the century could make plans for the future with the ex- pectation that those plans could be executed in a stable world, a world not markedly dif- ferent from what it had been the preceding fifty years. The changes we did anticipate we thought would be for the better. You who are graduating some forty years later are facing a world which may be com- pletely altered over night. As l am writing this in November, none of us know what the shape of things will be when the Log is issued in the spring. Of only one thing can we be sure. The great truths and virtues of our civilization are still our safest guide. Hold fast to the teach- ings of your church, ot your home, and of your school. lf you do, no matter how uncertain the outlook, that which is of greatest import- ance will be saved for you. RUSSELL S. PETERSON The past four years at Wilson High School have been pleasant and happy ones. There have been opportunities to visit with old friends and make new ones. An exchange of ideas and information has given us a better understanding of the problems to be met in the future. ln addition to receiving the Class of l95l has also given a great deal, given to make St. Paul a better community in which to live and given to make Wilson High a bet- ter school. Only through giving of our talents and resources can we expect to receive and prosper. Graduation from high school is but a be- ginning. There are greater obligations to be met in the future. lf there should be another war some of the Class may be asked to give more than should be asked of any one. Let us hope that this will not be necessary, but the picture is dark. lf a conflict is inevitable we must all do our part to make democracy live. The Class of '5l will, I am sure, do as well here as it has done in its school work. There is one question: Did we do our best . We should be satisfied with ourselves only when we have given everything to the best of our ability. May the future hold much for each member ot the Class of '5l. O. A. Our Hearts Were Young and Gay , a whimsical adventure of two teenage girls crossing the Atlantic alone, was presented by the speech department. The story is an auto- biography of the authors, Emily Kimbrough and Cornelia Otis Skin- ner, played by Marlene Hoffman and Barb Quimby. Particularly ex- citing points of the story came with the drowning of Gordon Farley and explosion of a gas meter. The play was one of the most suc- cessful ever presented at Wilson. Wilson students this year enjoyed the Christmas assembly which was presented by the Speech Department and Senior Choir. The story depicted the typical Christmas scenes, and se- lections by the Choir added to the Yuletide spirit. HCMECQMING To stately strains furnished by the Wilson Band, the king and queen candidates march- ed down the aisle, while colored spotlights picked up the glitter of the foil stair and throne. The theme for the homecoming was Snow Monroe , and the queen candidates wore fur snowball caps and carried muffs. After due suspense Doc Raymond select- ed Barb Quimby and Jim Gormley to reign over the festivities. Barb was crowned by Mary Kay Le Mire, l95O Queen of the Snows, and a former Wilson studentj Jim was crown- ed by King Boreas. The Homecoming parade, one of the longest and most colorful in the history of Wilson, was routed past Monroe. The title of Wizard of Wilson was conferred upon Mr. Peterson, and Mr. Raymond became Mas- ter ot Music. Mr. Fitzharris was also knighted as Coach Extraordinaire. BAND The Wilson band, under the loyal direction of Master of Music Raymond has done its share to keep lite at Wilson in harmony this year. Sponsored by Brown 81 Bigelow, band members braved the arc- tic weather to participate in the big evening parade ofthe St. Paul Winter Carnival. More emphasis has been placed on popular music this year, and the band has serenaded the students not only at assemblies but has presented lunch-time concerts in the gym. THE CHOIR Raymond, may always be depended upon for the more important occasions of the school year. A program of religious songs and carols was given at the Christmas assembly, and at the Easter Assembly. THE HYMN As a result of a contest conducted by the Music Department in the Fall, the lyrics submitted by Denise Champ were chosen tor the Wilson Hymn. The decision to adopt a hymn for Wilson arose from a need for some- thing more suitable for solemn occasions than the rouser, something belonging only to Wil- son. Denise's poem reflects the devotion all of us feel toward Wilson and is sure to gain popularity with the years. CLUBS M, ,JI f - , ,,V., SQ. JR I-II-V SI2. Despite the promising outlook at the beginning of the season the team of l95O, taking the breaks as they came, had to be satisfied with a record of two wins, tive losses, and one tie. The team received a disappointing setback by the loss ot Dutch Schmiedeberg in a nonvconferf ence tilt, He later came back to prove his worth, Wilson's power was built around the punch ot its line and the fine passing ot Jerry Williams, The Redmen came up with two out- standing plavers in the persons ot John Od- den, all-city guard, and Jerry 'vViIliams, quarf terback of the second team. The varsity end- ed the season in good fashion by beating Harding before a crowd which included the dads of the team members. BASKETBALL The Wilson cagers of '50-'5l had rough going throughout the season. Final statistics show an over- all record of six wins and thirteen losses. lt was an- ticipated that the team could have placed higher in conference standings. The lack ot breaks, however, and the low tree throw shooting percentages kept chances down. Good teamwork was evident, and sev- eral fine showings were made by the team, as a whole. Jim Keenan led the team in scoring with a total of 106 points. Fan support was considered poor for all city high schools. This year's 'B' squad is expected to provide the punch on next year's team. Wilson's gay blades of i950-51 skated to the tune of one victory, three ties, and five losses. Though their record seems none too impressive Coach Jessen felt that much was accomplished in giving the sport of hockey the reputation that it should have. What his boys lacked in experi- ence, they made up in hustle and determination. Prospects for next season are considered pretty good. Prospects for next sea- son are fair with Coach Huntley expecting some fast milers. GOLF- . Wilson's golf team, led by Bill Swanson, Bill Smith, and Staff Mou- sky, captured two out of nine matches played in a league known for its stiff competition. TENNIS- Bill Thul and Don Herrick were undefeated in doubles competition, advancing to second place in the region tournament.
