We re sure many of you are wondering why in the world the annual staff chose such a wild looking cover. Why is Catch Our Explosion printed on the cover? Did the annual staff blow up so many balloons that they lost touch with reality and are planning to blow NOT PLAN TO BLOW UP THE SCHOOL! up the school? We'd like to take this space to explain our reasons for the cover and title choice, but first let us assure you of one thing. WE DO One of the first decisions the annual staff makes is on the theme for the annual. The theme chosen should reflect the general feeling and attitude of the student body. After much discussion it was agreed that we wanted this annual to reflect the feeling of optimism we all had about the future of our school. We wanted everyone to look at us and see that slowly but surely we are building up our school and that we are excited about what is happening in our school. In other words, we want you to Catch Our Explosion. Why did we choose the wild looking cover? We will be the first to admit that our cover is not pretty in any sense of the word, but we feel that it accomplishes our purpose. It grabs your attention so that we can say — KEEP YOUR EYES ON US AND CATCH OUR EXPLOSION. New people have arrived to learn the ropes of the new 87 annual. Thanks to the new sponsor, Christy Sudderth, the staff was able to raise enough money to help the budget situation from last year. During the Halloween Carnival this year, the staff had an Arts and Crafts booth, featuring crafts which the students on the staff made themselves. Later in the year an Alumni Basketball game was held which helped raise a lot of money. Then during Valentine's, the staff sold balloons to all of the Wilson students. The 1986-87 staff would like to say thanks to all who bought an ad and a yearbook; without the student body’s help it would be impossible to put out a good yearbook. The editor was Tracey Walls and the assistant editor was Aylisa Beaver. The editor s responsibilities include seeing that all the people are assigned stories to write and they are done properly. For the first time the Journalism Staff held a Journalism workshop for junior and senior students in journalism classes of schools in the surrounding area. A total of 50 students from Ringling, Marietta, Waurika, and Wilson attended. The workshop was co-sponsored by Oklahoma State University. The speaker was Chuck Choate, a journalism teacher at Eastfield College in Dallas and the editor of the Oklahoma National Guard Quarterly. Better and more effective ways of writing and page layout as well as making Journalism a career was discussed in the workshop. It was also pointed out that the Newspaper Staff is no place for a lazy person. Also during the school term, the Journalism class joined the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association (OIPA). The class entered their stories in monthly contests with other schools their size. Cameron Herrin won first place for writing a sports article and Robert Tynes received a Certificate of Merit for feature writing. At the curriculum meet at Durant, Cameron Herrin received the first place gold medal and Roger Dethloff received the second place silver medal in journalism. The Journalism class attended the OIPA Spring Conference at OU in April. The Eagle s Voice received a Certificate of Honor and Cameron Herrin was chosen as an alternate for a Journalism Scholarship. They represent the student body and prepare individuals for his her place in society. Members must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and are put on probation if it drops below this average. Probation results in members being exempt from Beta Club activities. This year Beta Club has forty-one members. They installed officers and nineteen new members during a candlelight ceremony in October. The Club held a Senior vs. Faculty ballgame and went to Ringling to observe a quiz bowl in which five members of Beta Club were participating. Clay Battles, Stephanie t BUSY YEAR FOR BAND Very few people realize how many activities the band participates in and the countless number of hours spent in preparing for these activities. Most people think the band marches at football games on Friday nights and in the homecoming parade and then they are through for the year. Actually, the band's activities begin before the school year and continue through graduation. The band's 1986-87 school year started in early August with summer band and dinics for the drill team, rifles, flags, and twirlers. Then on the 21st of August, the band traveled to Healdton for the Healdton Oilfield Days Parade and won first place. On August 23, the band won second place in Ardmore's Football Saturday competition. September was spent preparing for the Oklahoma State Fair Parade which was held September 20. The band placed third in this competition. On October 11, the band again headed north for the Maysville Marching Contest and received first in marching, first in parade, and Outstanding Drum Major. November was a particularly busy month for the band. On November 8 the band traveled to Durant for All District Competition. Shawn Price placed first in Tuba and the band received the award for having the most boosters. Then on November 11, the band marched in the Veteran's Day Parade and were presented two plaques — one from the Carter County Veterans and another from the Oklahoma National Guard. On November 15 the band traveled to Durant for the second phase of All District Competition with Kelly Henderson placing second in French Horn. On November 22, Wilson band members won 33 chair positions on the S.C.O.B.D.A. Honor Band. December 6 brought the annual Southern Oklahoma Children's Christmas Parade in which Robert Tynes received a plaque for Outstanding Drum Major. Then on December 18, the band put on a Christmas Concert at the Wilson Gymnasium. The All-District Band Concert was held January 9 and 10 at Durant and the S.C.O.B.D.A. Honor Band Concert on January 23 and 24 at Walters. The High School Band received an Excellent rating, 13 students received solo awards, and the 7th Grade Band received an Excellent rating at Sulphur's Arbuckle Band Day on February 21. On February 28 the District Solo Contest was held in Ardmore with Wilson receiving 11 student awards and the Allison DeLano and Shawn Price qualifying for state competition. The Southern Oklahoma District Concert Band Contest was held in Ardmore on March 5 with Wilson receiving a Superior in concert performance, and Excellent in sight reading, and qualifying for state competition. Then came the day the band had worked for so hard — April 14, the State Concert Band Contest at Oklahoma University. The band ranked fifth in the state's 2-A class, receiving a one. 2 twos and 2 threes in the judging. Aylisa Beaver and Robert Tynes were nominated for the McDonald All American High School Band. On May 7 the High School Band held its Spring Coronation Concert where Dyanna Loving was crowned 1987 Wilson High School Band Queen. Then on May 5, the band had their annual banquet where they honored the 4 Seniors — Stephanie Newton, Billy Burns. Forrest Hodges, and Gary Hodges. The band's next and final performance of the year was to play for graduation which was held May 18. The band spent many hours participating in activities and competing in contests during the 1986-87 school year. They spent many more hours practicing and preparing for these activities and contests and on the bus traveling to and from these events. But I’m sure Mr. Johnson or any of the band members would agree that it was worth it, for they have truly made the 1986-87 Wilson High School Band the PRIDE OF WILSON. During the summer they attended OU’s Thunderhawk Cheerleading Camp and learned techniques for mounts, jumps, pyramids, cheers, and dance routines. Later in the summer the WHS Cheerleaders held a car wash and a Cheerleading Clinic for grades four through eight in which they taught cheers, jumps, and basic arm motions. They evaluated the students and had Pep Rallies. When the new school year began, the WHS Cheerleaders had a lot of new techniques to show along with skits. During that week classes competed in numerous wacky contests to see which class showed the most school spirit. Monday the students entered the doors of school showing off their weird new shoes. Everyone knows that in the handbook it says not to wear shorts, but that didn’t stop the student body, for Jam Day was the most popular day of Spirit Week. Wednesday there was a lot of kidding around about the dress and designs of clothing on students. Some people told others that they didn’t need to dress up for Nerd Day, because they were nerdy enough anyway. Horror Movie Day was a confusing day for some because half of the time no one knew who their best friend was. £ Teachers show their spirit by decorating a car for the parade. SOPHOMORES — 2nd PLACE 64 Beating Riverside is serious business for this clown. This small mummy gets through the parade the easy way — he sleeps through it! Jason Walls and his brothers enjoy participating in the parade. WEEK '87 Wednesday and Thursday were also the days set aside for class contests. One girl and one boy from each class competed in events such as tricycle races and egg tossing. Also each day Mr. Labeth would give clues to every class for a scavenger hunt. At the end of the day, the winner would add points to their scores for the week. The last day was the most exciting of all. Every student in school wore black and gold and was showing all the spirit they could muster. At the end of the day the Student Council sponsored a homecoming parade which was made up of the class floats that the classes had worked on during the week, the WHS Band, bicycles, cars, horses, and the football players and homecoming queen candidates. ONWARD AND UPWARD Graduates Culminate Their High Qchool Years The crowd fell silent on May 18, 1987 as the class of '87 filed into the gym to take their assigned seats. As they waited, each of the 46 graduates reflected upon the good times and memories of their high school years that would never be forgotten. Graduation proved to be a time of mixed feelings as the seniors passed through a major transition in their lives. All of the graduates were excited to be finished with high school. They felt that they were ready to conquer the world, but also felt a pang of sadness about leaving their friends and families behind. At the ceremony, there were the traditional student speakers including Sheila Holloway, valedictorian and Roger Dethloff, salutatorian. The guest speaker, Master Chief Robert R. Adams, a 1956 graduate of Wilson High School, told the seniors how proud he was of being from Wilson and encouraged them to always try their hardest at whatever they did. He also repeated to them their class motto “Every ending is a new beginning.” During the ceremony, man) graduates tried different ways tc try to keep cool in the heat of the gym. Some used fans while other; used kleenex to wipe off the dripping sweat. When they finally hac their diplomas in hand there were varied reactions by the students Most of them breathed a sigh ol relief, while others had tear; streaming down their faces. Overall, graduation was an ex citing time as each student proud ly walked forward to receive thei: hard-earned diplomas, ending their high school careers. Betty Henry is congratulated by Skinny Stewart after receiving her diploma. 68 Gary Hodges, Sheri Klinger, and Shellie Wheeler wait anxiously for graduation ceremonies to begin.
