His career began when he taught at Simon and Pike Schools in Love County from 1944 to 1946. Recalling his beginning in the small rural schools, he said that he had to get to school in time to have a fire built in the wood stove by the time the pupils arrived. The women teachers cooked the noon meal on the wood stove, he said. They would cook beans one day and soup the next. Everyone brought his own cup and spoon. School was always turned out in the fall to allow for cotton-picking. Therefore, they had a summer term and a winter term. He recalls the monthly community meetings, which included pie suppers and Christmas parties. For his salary he received seventy dollars per month. Mr. Hull came to the Wilson Schools in 1960, and has been here for twenty-one years. He was served as Superintendent for Schools for the past twelve years. He went back to college and earned his Master's and PhD degrees. Through procurements from state and federal grant programs, Mr. Hull has been able to effect many needed improvements in the Wilson Schools. Numerous teachers have been added to the teaching staff; new tennis courts have been built as well as a gymnasium, a swimming pool, two FFA buildings, and a baseball field. A football field is now under construction, and a new high school building was constructed and furnished two years ago. For his many years of deligent work for our school and community, we wish to dedicate this book to him.
