Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1968 volume:

FOREWORD to the Student Body and Faculty of Wilson High School: We seek in life An existence which has clarity. We search for sharply outlined concepts To guide our developments. We look to the solid elements Of our existence for security. We wander about in a hazy world, Groping aimlessly, Until we touch something concrete. Our fingers grasp tightly The firm definite edges. The edges that give us feelings of stability; For a time we withdraw, Content To enjoy our security, Just part of a crowd. Before long, however, We hazard another glance Out into the world. To our surprise, We no longer look into a haze, But instead, We see a number of shapes Developing before us. Blacks and whites Begin to separate themselves into groups, Adding clarity to our existence. Around the newly developing shapes, We can detect the faintest hints of edges. With cautious, halting steps, We emerge from our niche in security, To cast hurried glances at our world. For a moment, we pause, asking, “Why am I here?” From all around us come answers. Answers which help define our existence. Surprisingly, these answers are not fuzzy, But distinctly outlined and set apart. From half-truths and fallacious ideas We begin to understand why And for what we exist. In our own minds, We begin to sort ideas logically, Casting off muddled ideas and Studying those having meaning. Finally, we seek To separate ourselves, To place an edge Around our personalities. We strive to become individuals, Unique beings, With distinct features. We determine for ourselves a goal Around which we center our plans — Whether or not we reach our goal, We are a success, For we have contributed our own Ffard Edges To society and life. We have found the clarity in our existence. 1 It has been a long, eventful year. There have been many things taking place in the making of this yearbook. In appreciation of all the heartaches, laughter, work, play, tedium, variety, and fun, the 1968 Eagle’s Voice staff would like to take this opportunity to humbly and sincerely say “THANK YOU” DEDICATION Who Doesn’t Know MRS. TODD?? Last minute check before leaving at the end of a long day. “In position . . . Type!” ... the storehouse of knowledge of Typing I and II, General Business, Bookkeeping, Shorthand, and literally hundreds of other subjects? . . . the untiring sponsor of the Eagle’s Voice staff, the newspaper staff, and the senior class? . . . Who in Wilson High School doesn’t know the lady with the tremendous Eagle Spirit, who was named this year Honorary Pep Club member? ... For all her help and advice, we of the Eagle’s Voice staff of ’68 are very grateful. . . . It is to you, Mrs. I odd, that we proudly dedicate the 1968 Eagle’s Voice and say thank you for your hard work and dedication. What makes the world go round? HANDS!! In action they create instruments by bending glass, express excitement and appreciation, quench thirst, open doors, call people on the phone, express exasperation, and do any of the everyday odd jobs that all of us have. Here are four pairs of hands — guiding hands that make up only a part of our administration. Mrs. Robertson, secretary, confers with Mr. Ott, superintendent, about a matter on which she is working. Administration Leads the Way. Always a busy man, Mr. Dunsworth stops looking through the files just long enough for a picture. Being high school principal is a big job. Mrs. Dunsworth, high school secretary, checks on which events are coming up in the coming weeks. E. Beginning usually one week (give or take a day) before a large deadline, an air of hilarity seems to settle over the inhabitants of the cluttered (always) annual room. Amid the scramble of triplicates, pica type, and stamped pictures, staffers not only carry on work such as typing, drawing layouts and counting headlines, but plot pranks to play on each other, or just anyone who happens along. Result: mass confusion. Amazingly enough, we somehow seem to deliver the copy to the publisher on time (granted we some-times make it within minutes). The cry “We’re not gonna make it ya’ll” is always sadly heard when a picture is lost, a layout is found lacking in style, or copy somehow gets mangled by a smiling genius. In another room, just down the hall, a second grader is shown the wonders of fractions. At the same time third graders learn cursive writing and the convenience of a library, while fourth graders study faraway places in geography. In still another part of the building, fifth graders study English grammar and sixth graders are learning social studies. But this is not the whole picture. The overall view of the elementary school shows much more — communication among students and between students and teachers. These years are the foundation of all the education that these pupils will receive. The grade school teachers have an important job — that of molding personalities. Along with formal schooling and “book lamin’ ” there are recesses, where the students learn to get along with one another, the lunch hours and milk breaks, where they start a store of knowledge of nutrition simply because it “looks and tastes good,” and the extra features of music classes and books and magazines from the school library. Mr. O’Connor takes roll call during music class as Carol Brown, accompanist looks on. Time for a quick drink at the fountain before recess.
