NORMA JEAN YBARRA FHA 3, 4 FHA Officer 4 FTA 3, 4 FSA 2, 3 Pep Squad 3 Class Officer 4 Who's Who Among American High School Students 3 Volleyball 2 Spanish Club 1 Senior Play LINES WRITTEN IN AN EMPTY SCHOOL HALL The last game of the season. The last game of the year. The last game of high school. That means forever. I look down the corridor and see scuffed hall floors, half-open doors, and dark classrooms. I hear cars going by and children laughing on the playground. I see blue-and-white paper streamers and decorated lockers. I see a sign that proudly bears the legend Home of the Victorious Mustangs. As I read it, I hear the echoes of band music, cheering crowds, and shrilling referee whistles. I remember boys playing their hearts outg losingg and getting up to play again, even harder than before. I remember girls with faith and pride in those boysg girls who loved them even more when they fought and lost. I remember tears for defeat, prayers for injured, and laughter for victory. I remember kids with pride in themselves, in their accomplishments, and in their school. I remember my first date, and the times I thought my heart was broken forever. I remember sighs of relief after tests, and groans over homework assignments. I remember a long line of schools, and a longer line of voices and faces that belong to the memory of those schools. I remember good times and bad times and - oh - I remember! Then I come back from my memories, and I look down the empty hall, with its scuffed floors and torn streamers: Realizing that soon I will walk down this hall and out of this building, leaving it forever empty of my presence.
