The money is good but the prospect of doing this as a lifes work gixes him some pause for sober thought. May oe with the S400 he has already deposited in a joint bank account with Agnes-plus what he ll be able to earn washing dishes at the frat house-he d better enroll at the University in September after all But Agnes has other ideas! In a weak moment she draws the S400 from the account and makes a down pay ment on a thousand-dollar en- gagement ring! Bob, though incensed and disappointed, continues to plod wearily away at his job, meeting the payments on the ring, his dreams of State U growing dimmer and dimmer. And when at last-in the waning days of summer and the twilight of his hopes-the others are leaving for college, he catches a glimpse of the barren, humdrum future in store for himself . . . unless he is willing to wrestle the realities and win! All is well that ends well! Bob and Agnes break their engagement, the ring is sold and Bob gets back his 5400. Irene takes her rightful place with Bob and he goes to college determined to make good.
