SENIOR CLASS HISTORY A gleam of yellow flowers against the black of the earth and immediately I recog- nized it to be the Senior Class of the Cherokee High School. Can it be possible that these were the little grreen seeds, known as the Freshman class, that were planted deep down in old mother education. Yet four long years agro we were both green and seedy. After the showers of perseverance and the warm smiles of the faculty fell upon us, we started to grow in their favor. During our second year our little rootlets held us more secure and even then we sent out small shoots of kindness. Our third year marked the highest point in our social career. At the Flower Fes- tival fJunior-Senior Prom.J we surpassed all other gardens. We had an exceptionally good crop of VVisteria that year. Of course that might be expected because we are such a blooming bunch. After talking' a few minutes with Garden Decorator Ary, he told me that he trimmed the edge of the garden with blue bells and morning: glories so that the fiowers would get to their 8:50 classes on time. He then introduced me to Head Gardener Bates, who showed me the Senior members of the Glee Club in the form of I-Iofwjlly. Next we came to some poppies. Imagine my surprise when I saw Agnes Iikdahl among them, for they were the declamatory contestants. A variety of colors flashed before my eyes and I beheld the orchestra. in the form of Peftunjias. Wlhen I learned that debate was prom- inent among flowers, I was not surprised to find so many .Iack-in-the-Pulpits. VVe then met Gardener Hunter who offered to show me his athletic flowers. The first we came to were ramblers Crosesj. Thank goodness they didn't live up to their name! Next I saw some tangled vines. Gardener Hunter straigzhtened them out, and who could it be but Tub Lamont and Sam Martin-wrestlers. A very large patch of guardfeniaj held a prominent position in the garden. I then discovered the Seniors on the football team-Nutty Callahan, Slim Krekow, Tub Lamont, Ferol Christenson, Mick Ryan, Soup 0'Leary, Chuck Hartigan, Spike Nelson and Buzz Leonard. Some Johnny-Jump-Ups boarded these and I learned that several times the last three change places and together with Crate Peterson, Glen Bierman, make up part ol' this year's basketball team. He also told me that he had a good crop of snowballs which in the athletic world stands for base ball. I noticed that only the stems remained on some of the flowers. On inquiring I discovered that they were Bolliver lJel',oss and Smut Donovan, athletic flowers who had left our school garden. Many of them were sunflowers and I-lead Gardener Bates said the reason for this was because they were so brilliant and always looking upward. One factor I noticed was that there were not many bachelor buttons and Sweet XNilliams. Leap year has its effect, I suppose. Then as in all other classes texceptionally few in oursl are the cactus-the stuck- up flowers. ln the center of the garden was the Yucca Whipplei Ctlur I.ord's Candlej whose torch is held high to let the world know that the flower grarden of '24' is very promising: -Birdeva J. Not only do we hoost for the boys hecause we have a big' right to talk oi' the line representation that is made hy the grirls in their athletic activities. Close to the night of I'lallowe'en, we showed the Freshmen with the Sopliie-Fresliie party, what it meant to go to a real party. The party was talked of and was a huge 5 success, showing that the Sophoinores are made of real old pep--that which makes the world go 'round. Of course we are praised Qfew exceptionsj hy the teachers for our merited ahility, and often we see the jealousy of the other classes when they look upon our line represeutation in all activities. ln 1926 when we leave this high school we hope lo have surpassed all other classes. - fC'harles Scanlan. No you e'er dream of days of happiness That now are past, of loving hands you knew, Of children clamb'ring o'er you, from the roof Down to the cellar, and of gleaming light And laughter once, while now you stand aloof ? They are: The Girls' Glee Clnb, Orchestra and the Sextette. Our attention is first ealled to the Girls' Glee Cluh. There are thirty-one members, ehosen for their voiee quality. The songs that they sinp: require delicate singringr and sensitive interpretation. The next is the Orchestra, which eonsists of eleven memhers. They have met regularly for rehearsals eaeh week. Music was furnished hy them for the .lunior Orpheum Cirenit, given hy the Juniors, Mareh Il, 1924. Individuals of the Orchestra have furnished mnsie for the high school assemblies at different times. The Girls' Sextette was organized at the beginning: of the year. The following six girls make np the Sextette: Genelle XVright, Mary Sage, Birdeva Bush, Rosalie Trigrprs, Ruth Melton and Marion Koehne. The Carnegie Library contains 10.000 volumes, all carefully and scien- tifically catalogued. The exceptional growth recently shown in book cir- culation and in the use of various facilities of the library shows a growing appreciation of this institution. It is proper to make specific mention of the museum housed in this library building and under control of the library. It was organized in 1920, and comprises at the present time an enviable as- sortment. In it are found historical collections and antiques, some pieces of the assortment dating back to our Pilgrim Fathers. The War Collection, while only loaned to the museum, is an interesting one. To the average vis- itor the section devoted to the Aborigene fAmerican Indianj is probably the most interesting and unique. Space cannot permit of descriptive writing on this subject, but. gathered from the old Indian battlefields in Cherokee County, these relics of an earlier inhabitation are most interesting. Numerous fine church ediiices are to be found in various parts of the city. The denominations maintaining active organizations are: Presbyterian, Methodist, Catholic. Congregational, Christian, Baptist, Swedist Lutheran, Iivangelieal Lutheran and Latter Day Saints. The city takes great pride in its public school system, which includes high school. junior high school, and three grade schools. These hold high rank among educational institutions of the state, as is shown by the fact that graduate students from Iowa State Teachers College are sent here for their final training in practice teaching. Here, also, is maintained Mt. St. Mary's Academy and Immaculate Con- ception high school. both conducted by the Catholic Sisterhood, and afford- ing unusual facilities. The recreational side of life finds expression in the Country Club, a strong organization owning its own grounds, comprising 82 acres, on which was recently erected a 312,000 club house. Splendid progress has been made within recent years in the development of the roads and highways of the county. By the end of the present year the entire primary road system will have been brought to standard grade and graveled. Many miles of secondary and township roads also have been brought to grade and some extensive graveling operations have been car- ried on. Cherokee is already the home of several manufacturing plants that are enjoying a steady, substantial growth, but there is a large field for develop- ment in this line. VVith its railroad facilities and its freedom from the per- plexing problems of the big industrial centers, Cherokee offers an ideal lo- cation for manufacturing. A Federal building is now in course of architectural planning. This will house our post office and be a most modern structure of its kind, with all conveniences. It will occupy a large plot of ground, one block from thc business center, and will be directly opposite the Wilson High School build- ing, the two facing toward each other. It is a 375,000.00 building project for the city of Cherokee. Cherokee is a place in which those desiring a home can locate with the feeling that here is a city. a social home town in which to establish a residence. Correspondence is invited on any subject relative to Cherokee, County and City. The woodland trees were clothed with living fire The sumac bush a flaming torch held out To show the brilliance of the funeral pyre Of summer's glorious forces put to rout. When the last death dance of the leaves is o'er The shimmering glory of the trees is shed, The golden mists of Autumn are no more, Then winds blow stronger and the leaves are dead Oh gorgeous Autumn with your colors bright Stay in my heart and help to guide it right. --Mildred Onstine U SUNSET VVhen l behold the sunset in the west Yvith beautiful and cheery tints aglow, lt seemed as if the whole world was at rest lrVith shadows slowly moving to and fro, How sweet the sunset rests upon this bank, And sends its rays upon the dark earth vast, Each minute gliding down to unknown rank, And drops the cares of daylight in the past.
