Can you guess which word described the 1985-86 cheerleading season for the varsity football cheerleaders best: a. EX- CITING b. FUN c. BUSY d. ALL OF THE ABOVE. If you guessed ttd you are absolutely correct! The nine girls who could be found every Friday night from August 25 to November 8 cheering on the sidelines in the heat, rain, and cold did much more than first meets the eye. After spending four long, loud days at the UCA cheerleading camp at Converse in June, the cheerleaders returned with new ideas and lots of enthusiasm for the ith lots of spirit, Grace Bynum and Meg 1985 football season. Many hard 'rice cheer on their Barons at the homecoming -ame. Exciting? Fun? Busy? All the Above! hours of practicing cheers, learning pom-pom routines, and planning pep rallies were spent to boost spirit and entertain audiences. Pa- tience and a steady hand were re- quired every week to paint a new banner for the football players to run through. Money was raised by having a clinic for the Hfuture Baron cheerleaderstt in grades first through sixth. The money earned was well spent on special treats given to the football players week- ly. Rapping up the season with the traditional spirit week which includ- ed dress-up days such as sweats day, nerd day, jersey day, and blueiwhite day, kindled the spark of excitement for the Wilson HalVThomas Sumter game. As the squad turned in their pom-poms at the end of the season, they knew they would still be bound by the close-knit friendships that had developed during the season. Despite the rain and cold, the varsity cheerleaderst spirits are not dampened as they hit the field for a whiteeglove routine during intermission.
