Fourth down and ten, The Baron defense tensed as they knew this play would decide the game. Hut! The quarterback dropped back to pass. He lofted the ball toward the Cardinal Newman receiver who was speeding for the endzone. Mickey Plowdown, on defensive coverage for Wilson Hall, leaped up and batted the ball away to preserve a 7 to O victory over Car- dinal Newman in one of the most ex- citing games of the season. Seniors Heath Hoover and Murrell Smith led the Baron defense, punishing opposing running backs with bone-crushing hits. The Baron offense was led by a host of Seniors. Running backs Gene Gee and Patrick Richburg ran for touchdown after touchdown. Bucky Fidler and John Britton hauled in passes from W. T. Brogdon while Darren Rhodes led an offensive line that outclassed and outfought a relatively stronger and heavier defen- sive line from opposing schools. All the Seniors led the Barons this year, but not without the guidance and ex- perience of first-year head coach Robert Wrightenberry and assistant With his eyes 0 the ban'. receive coach Mike Hill. Heath Hoover 2:2??? Plowden makes another incredible summed it up by saying, itThe coaches worked with us long, hard hours molding us from a bunch of players into a true Baron football team. They deserve a lot of credit. A few mistakes and some bad breaks caused some games to go the other way. On the Move With the Barons Water, water! was a cry heard many times by every manager. This yearls managers for the varsi- ty football team were Mark Phillips, Keith Griffin, Kirk Griffin, and Ken Rosefield, all members of the sixth grade. These young men had several new and exciting ex- periences. Mark said, ill enjoyed being a manager and meeting all the players, especially Patrick Richburg and Bucky Fidler, and the coaches. The managers learned real responsibility and had many important duties, including running water onto the field, always having a clean ball to send onto the field, and keeping the nred box, of medical and equipmental aids organized. All four managers worked hard with the added bonus of eating pre-game meals with the Varsity, riding a chartered bus to Thomas Heyward, and receiving that special feeling of pride that comes with the victories. Although these young men will be playing football next year, they will never forget their experiences, knowing that they put forth their best as managers. Stretching out in mid-flight, Andy Reynolds pulls down another pass. Senior Gene Gee prepares to blast through wouldAbe tacklers. The opponents don't have a chance as Bucky Fidler makes a hit and Mickey Plowden and Heath Hoover close in. 92 V Varsity Football
