in My Room uPut it in my room! three year old Sam Lowder burst forth as his older brotherts name, Clay Lowder, was called out for Most Valuable Player in baseball. The 1985 Spring Banquet honored all of the outstanding athletes on the golf, baseball, tennis, and track teams. A number of students walked away with all-conference plaques and trophies while Mr. Charles Smith received Conference Coach of' the Year and Mrs. Frances McLaughlin received Coach of the Year in Girlst Track. Mr. Gaither Spencer was recognized numerous times for his assistance with Spring Sports. Even after a two hour presentation, the question still remained, uWhere did Clay put the trophy? Recipients of the Spring Sports Most Valuable and Most Improved trophies are excited about their awards. For many, it was a long season and these awards were well-earned. For all their hard work and success in sports, Joy Galloway and Tripp Ballard are named most Valuable Athletes. All-conference award winners eagerly display their plaques as proof of their hard work. The white pocked golf ba slowly rolled across the smooth green toward the hole. Tension mounted as the ball appeared to be heading for a direct shot. The face of the golfer broke into a self- assured smile. But as the ball came within inches of the hole, the smile faded, for the ball gently looped around the side of the hole stop- ping near the hole but not within; almost but not quite, the description of the season. Composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores, the golf team pulled off an impressive win against Robert E. Lee, the defending con- ference champs, and two crucial victories over arch-rival, Thomas Sumter. The year was capped off with a fourth place finish in the state tournament. According to Davis Moise, uWe made many mistakes this season, but that will help us in the upcoming year. Mr. Hugh Hill, the golf coach, stressed t the rules of the game and the teamis putting and short game. With almost all players returning, the future looks bright for Wilson Hall golfers. Fourth down and ten, The Baron defense tensed as they knew this play would decide the game. Hut! The quarterback dropped back to pass. He lofted the ball toward the Cardinal Newman receiver who was speeding for the endzone. Mickey Plowdown, on defensive coverage for Wilson Hall, leaped up and batted the ball away to preserve a 7 to O victory over Car- dinal Newman in one of the most ex- citing games of the season. Seniors Heath Hoover and Murrell Smith led the Baron defense, punishing opposing running backs with bone-crushing hits. The Baron offense was led by a host of Seniors. Running backs Gene Gee and Patrick Richburg ran for touchdown after touchdown. Bucky Fidler and John Britton hauled in passes from W. T. Brogdon while Darren Rhodes led an offensive line that outclassed and outfought a relatively stronger and heavier defen- sive line from opposing schools. All the Seniors led the Barons this year, but not without the guidance and ex- perience of first-year head coach Robert Wrightenberry and assistant With his eyes 0 the ban'. receive coach Mike Hill.
