Putting a seemingly easy stroke re- quires deep concentration and perfect form. This pose is shown by Steve Helms as he prepares to sink another in a match against Williamsburg Academy. Sink It! The white pocked golf ba slowly rolled across the smooth green toward the hole. Tension mounted as the ball appeared to be heading for a direct shot. The face of the golfer broke into a self- assured smile. But as the ball came within inches of the hole, the smile faded, for the ball gently looped around the side of the hole stop- ping near the hole but not within; almost but not quite, the description of the season. Composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores, the golf team pulled off an impressive win against Robert E. Lee, the defending con- ference champs, and two crucial victories over arch-rival, Thomas Sumter. The year was capped off with a fourth place finish in the state tournament. According to Davis Moise, uWe made many mistakes this season, but that will help us in the upcoming year. Mr. Hugh Hill, the golf coach, stressed t the rules of the game and the teamis putting and short game. With almost all players returning, the future looks bright for Wilson Hall golfers. Tennis Tension Matching Hit for Hit A spin of the racket began the game. Silently, two players matched hit for hit. The tension-filled at- mosphere was finally broken as one of the players slammed in the winning point. Tennis . . . a game of skill and perseverance, a game of ingenuity and expertise. If boys, and girls, tennis teams were rated on above-par records, our tennis teams fell a little bit short. However, if teams were rated by enthusiasm and spirit, our teams would have been a smash hit! Both teams ended the season with an even showing, but the results of the State Finals in Apparently concerned about the outcome of Tommy and Johnls doubles match, Coach Chuck McCord and Mickey Plowden give sup- port from the sidelines at the Charleston State Tournament. 455 ,sfH-ibv HHHgJ a Maghi ... vH Peers! ,,1,, 4,7, t ahimw: ,A 7 Charleston proved them even stronger, with all entries winning their first match. Julie Rowe, the girls number one player, and Tom- my Wilson and John Britton, the boys, doubles team, progressed to the semi-finals. The boys' tennis team profited from Coach McCord,s talent as well as his sense of humor. Our season wasnlt too great, but we had a good time and learned a lot from Coach McCord so that next year Well be even better, said John James in retrospect. No one would have believed it was Mrs. McMahonls first year as a tennis coach as she spread her eagerness and optimism throughout the season. The team was fortunate to have a coach with such a positive attitude. Even the parents got involved by putting together a girls B team. The team was coached by Mrs. Hazel Ann Rowe and organized by Mrs. Fran Kay, Mrs. Jeanne Galianogand Mrs. Deckie Jones. After the State Tournament was over and the trophies and plaques had been handed out, all that was heard was the bounce of a tennis ball as two solitary figures slipped off to the Wilson Hall tennis courts to practice. Next year wasnlt far away. llJust wait until next year,H exclaimed Laura Leach. 1985 Girls' Tennis Team Front Row: Julie Rowe, Allison Gulledge, Lucy Grey Wilson, Sarah Young, Anne Abercrombie, Laura Leach, Deidre Morris. 1985 Boys' Tennis Team Front Row: Jamie Glasscock, Taylor Davis, Mickey Plowdon, Frank Moses, Bart Shaw; Back Row: Myles Bland, Jim Heath, Tommy Wilson, John Britton, John James, Coach Chuck McCord. A number of students walked away with all-conference plaques and trophies while Mr. Charles Smith received Conference Coach of' the Year and Mrs. Frances McLaughlin received Coach of the Year in Girlst Track. Mr. Gaither Spencer was recognized numerous times for his assistance with Spring Sports. Even after a two hour presentation, the question still remained, uWhere did Clay put the trophy? Recipients of the Spring Sports Most Valuable and Most Improved trophies are excited about their awards. For many, it was a long season and these awards were well-earned.
