Tennis Tension Matching Hit for Hit A spin of the racket began the game. Silently, two players matched hit for hit. The tension-filled at- mosphere was finally broken as one of the players slammed in the winning point. Tennis . . . a game of skill and perseverance, a game of ingenuity and expertise. If boys, and girls, tennis teams were rated on above-par records, our tennis teams fell a little bit short. However, if teams were rated by enthusiasm and spirit, our teams would have been a smash hit! Both teams ended the season with an even showing, but the results of the State Finals in Apparently concerned about the outcome of Tommy and Johnls doubles match, Coach Chuck McCord and Mickey Plowden give sup- port from the sidelines at the Charleston State Tournament. 455 ,sfH-ibv HHHgJ a Maghi ... vH Peers! ,,1,, 4,7, t ahimw: ,A 7 Charleston proved them even stronger, with all entries winning their first match. Julie Rowe, the girls number one player, and Tom- my Wilson and John Britton, the boys, doubles team, progressed to the semi-finals. The boys' tennis team profited from Coach McCord,s talent as well as his sense of humor. Our season wasnlt too great, but we had a good time and learned a lot from Coach McCord so that next year Well be even better, said John James in retrospect. No one would have believed it was Mrs. McMahonls first year as a tennis coach as she spread her eagerness and optimism throughout the season. The team was fortunate to have a coach with such a positive attitude. Even the parents got involved by putting together a girls B team. The team was coached by Mrs. Hazel Ann Rowe and organized by Mrs. Fran Kay, Mrs. Jeanne Galianogand Mrs. Deckie Jones. After the State Tournament was over and the trophies and plaques had been handed out, all that was heard was the bounce of a tennis ball as two solitary figures slipped off to the Wilson Hall tennis courts to practice. Next year wasnlt far away. llJust wait until next year,H exclaimed Laura Leach. 1985 Girls' Tennis Team Front Row: Julie Rowe, Allison Gulledge, Lucy Grey Wilson, Sarah Young, Anne Abercrombie, Laura Leach, Deidre Morris. 1985 Boys' Tennis Team Front Row: Jamie Glasscock, Taylor Davis, Mickey Plowdon, Frank Moses, Bart Shaw; Back Row: Myles Bland, Jim Heath, Tommy Wilson, John Britton, John James, Coach Chuck McCord.
