Coach Charles Smith contemplates some new strategies to pull the team ahead as Wilson Hall and Thomas Sumter battle for the championship. Real Champions The score was 8 to 7, our favor. There was one out left in the last inning with Hammond Academy up to bat. The bases were loaded; Martha Parker, Ham- mondls best player, was on third base. Tension was high, for whomever won this game would go on to play TSA for the champion- ship. For the loser, it was the end of the season. The Hammond batter swung, and her bat made contact with the ball. The ball bounced and went to Sandy Strickland, second baseman for Wilson Hall, who caught it and threw it home just in time. a Never Lookini Back The sun gleamed down on parched grass and parched bodies clad in T-shirts and shorts as they ran and stretched in training for the up- coming meet. They finished with a record of five wins and two losses and were given the title of conference cham- pions at the upper AAA conference meet held at Francis Marion. Mrs. Franics McLaughlin, who coached the girls with Mrs. Betsy Reynolds, was named the conference Track coach of the year. As Susan James said, Mrs. Number one! The Lady Barons celebrate their precious Conference Championship. Though the boys worked equally as hard, their season was not as successful. Like many of the spring sports it was the first year for at least half of the team. But under the leader- ship of coach Wrightenberry, it was a year to learn and gain ex- perience in the highly com- petitive sport of track.
