Coach Charles Smith contemplates some new strategies to pull the team ahead as Wilson Hall and Thomas Sumter battle for the championship. Real Champions The score was 8 to 7, our favor. There was one out left in the last inning with Hammond Academy up to bat. The bases were loaded; Martha Parker, Ham- mondls best player, was on third base. Tension was high, for whomever won this game would go on to play TSA for the champion- ship. For the loser, it was the end of the season. The Hammond batter swung, and her bat made contact with the ball. The ball bounced and went to Sandy Strickland, second baseman for Wilson Hall, who caught it and threw it home just in time. Although the Lady Barons were victorious in this game, they suf- Coach and supporter Mr. Clay Lowder prepares to award well-deserved trophies to the two seniors, Joy Galloway and Jeanna 82 - Softball 1 H J4! A Lot to Love '32: f feted a disappointing loss to TSA for the state championship. Despite being runner-ups, the Lady Barons were real champions. The girls all took pride in their wins and pulled together like a family. Through great senior leadership, and a devoted, patient coach, Mr. Charles Smith, the Barons had a terrific season. Another important factor in softball success was the crowds. Jennifer Thomas said, llBaron fans love to see their teams winfl and this year in softball, Baron fans had a lot of love. Swinging as hard as she can, Sandy Strickland puts in her all in hopes of a home run. As auxiliary pitcher, senior Joy Galloway strains to catch a pop fly. Joy was awarded Most Valuable Team member at the Spring Banquet.

Gripping the bat firmly, he lean- ed all his strength forward to hit the ball with lightning speed over the fence and proceeded to jog the bases confidently. The scene was portrayed more than once during the season. Unfortunately, the op- ponent was the one accomplishing these feats. But even though the season was not victorious, the baseball team remained determin- ed to tip the scales and make this a winning year. The 8-7 win over Salem and the 9-7 win over Robert E. Lee were games the team wish- ed to repeat. Coach Mark Roach now had a score to settle with such tough opponents as Wade Hamp- ton and Thomas Sumter. Craig Shipman summed up the season by saying, we were the best losers. We learned how to walk off the field with our heads held high, the most important characteristic of winneYst A look of complete concentration was on first baseman Bill Wingate's face during the Salem win at Wilson Hall. Star pitcher, Dan Reynolds, delivers another fastball strike. While number seven was on the mound, Wilson Hall pitching was a success. Baseball - 81
