So Many Dashing young men in coats and ties posed in front of the gazebo for the club picture. These were the students who had earned the privilege of memberships in the Key Club. The Key Club sponsored fund raisers and events that were beneficial for the club members as well as the public. Junior and senior boys were eligible for membership. After writing a paragraph explaining why they were interested in joining the club, the can- didatest applications were reviewed and voted on by former members of the club. During Christmas, the Key Club col- lected toys for the underprivileged children. Other fund raisers were held in the spring. Under the guidance of Coach Mark Roach, the Key Club performed a valuable service to the school and community with their concern and care for the well-being of all Sumterites. President. It takes more than filling out a form. You must be at least a Sophomore, be willing to participate in community activities, and be liked by present members. Being an Octagon member was a special opportunity to meet with girls of similar interests and to uphold the clubs purpose which was to provide service to the com- munity as well as to the school. Ad- vised by Mrs. Beverly Thomas, the club had plans to sponsor a Mr. Baron Contest, with the money earned going to a charitable cause. Asked why Louise Kay was in the Octagon Club, she replied, lil like helping my school as well as the com- munity. Making good grades is important to all Octagon members as Susan James displays in her attentiveness in class.
