For Academic Excellence Tension filled the air on May 24, 1980 as Wilson Hall students anxiously waited to hear their names called. Awards were presented to those students who excelled in different areas during the school year. Confused faces could be seen throughout the gym as the foreign language teachers got up to speak. Though one could usually catch the award winners name in the jumbled mass of words, it was still a relief when the English speaking teachers took their turn. Academic achievers were not the only ones recognized in the upper school ceremony, as awards were presented to chorus members and those students with perfect attendance. Earlier that day, a separate ceremony was held for grades K-6. Students received 40 a Awardsi Day awards for honor roll, perfect at- tendance, and poster and poetry contests. The Class of 1985 was also honored with an earlier awards ceremony to recognize its many high achievers. uIt was great, if you won an award, said Sophomore Tripp Boykin. Though not everyone could be recognized, the 1985 Awards Day Ceremony was an event to remember. It is a great honor to receive the Barbara Moses Unsworth award and Darren Rhodes solemnly accepts this award from Ms. Lydia Palmer. Ml. Merritt congratulates Junior Marshall John Britton on his scholarship. Mark Waterstraat admires his plaque for academic excellence he received from Coach Roach. A

Julie Rowe appears amused by Laura McLaughlin and Susan Watt's last minute cramming for a big test. The carefree days of summer vacation disappeared during the night and every student was im- mediately confronted with the shock of returning to a rigorous academic life. New teachers and their own particular methods of teaching became familiar. Increasingly difficult subjects created unexpected challenges. A new student, Kathy Meeks, observed ttone major difference at Wilson Hall from some other schools in this area is the major emphasis placed on academics. I do believe that I will get an opportunity for an ex- cellent education here. Some students, like Elaine Morrison, had to discover new study habits for the upcoming year. ltAfter spending a whole summer of being able to go out, its a drag to have to say ll can't, I have to go to school tomorrow. But being involved in the various clubs and their activities offered a change of pace for students from their tedious academic schedules. Many students found out that this school year did offer a chance to grow in maturity and responsibility necessary for future success as adults. ClubslAcademics Divider - 39
