inderiarten I tried to squeeze my 12th grade body into a kindergartener s desk Sud- denly, I realized just what kindergarten was. Gone was the illusion that kindergarten had been one big recess with breaks to eat lunch and have show and tell. Memories of carefree hours of storytelling and coloring were replaced by what I discovered was actually hap- pening. We were learning. Do you remember having your name taped to your desk? Word association. And show and tell? That was teaching you to get along with your peers and to share. Helping pass out cookies for snack time wasn t just a chance to talk to everyone in the room it was also a lesson in responsibility. Obedience, following directions, and math fundamentals were also some things you learned unknowingly in kindergarten. In the Squirrel's Den the first graders learned their reading principles that will help in years to come. At Thanksgiving the kindergarten treated their parents with a pre-holiday play.
