Can you guess which word described the 1985-86 cheerleading season for the varsity football cheerleaders best: a. EX- CITING b. FUN c. BUSY d. ALL OF THE ABOVE. If you guessed ttd you are absolutely correct! The nine girls who could be found every Friday night from August 25 to November 8 cheering on the sidelines in the heat, rain, and cold did much more than first meets the eye. After spending four long, loud days at the UCA cheerleading camp at Converse in June, the cheerleaders returned with new ideas and lots of enthusiasm for the ith lots of spirit, Grace Bynum and Meg 1985 football season. Many hard 'rice cheer on their Barons at the homecoming -ame. Exciting? Fun? Busy? All the Above! hours of practicing cheers, learning pom-pom routines, and planning pep rallies were spent to boost spirit and entertain audiences. Pa- tience and a steady hand were re- quired every week to paint a new banner for the football players to run through. Money was raised by having a clinic for the Hfuture Baron cheerleaderstt in grades first through sixth. The money earned was well spent on special treats given to the football players week- ly. Rapping up the season with the traditional spirit week which includ- ed dress-up days such as sweats day, nerd day, jersey day, and blueiwhite day, kindled the spark of excitement for the Wilson HalVThomas Sumter game. As the squad turned in their pom-poms at the end of the season, they knew they would still be bound by the close-knit friendships that had developed during the season. Despite the rain and cold, the varsity cheerleaderst spirits are not dampened as they hit the field for a whiteeglove routine during intermission. Varsity Cheerleaders: Susan James, Candler Lowder, Angela Rolleston, Julie Wylie, Grace Bynum, Meg Price, Allison Gulledge, Kelieigh Waynick, Aline McCathern. Varsity Football Cheerleaders - 95

Burnint Barons The scoreboard read Thomas Sumter - ZTWilson Hall - 0 with only fifteen seconds left in the game. As fans lined up along the fence, Tripp Lee called the play in the huddle. The Baron linemen fired off the ball on the snap and provided Don Blanding with the blocking he needed to hurdle a lone General and land in the end zone. As Baron hands went into the air symboliz- . ing touchdown, the yellow flag came , L Dan Reynolds, an V 5 down and nullified the score. Penalties mm Generalquarterback. had hurt the Barons the entire game, i but this one lit a fire in the playerst hearts that could not be extinguished. Two plays later, with only seven seconds left on the clock, the tenacious Barons awaited anxiously for the snap- ping of the ball. The stage was set and heroes were shortly to be decided. Time ran out as Tripp Lee unleashed the miraculous throw to Tripp Waynick, giving the Barons six points and a victory. The spirit shown in this game by the players and fans dominated the J.V. and seventh and eighth grade football teams and ex- emplified the true meaning of being a Baron. ,1; i 1, wwrwwhmwwwwg JV Football Team Front Row: Morgan Watt, Bart Shaw, Chris Stevenson, Frank Moses, Austin Palmer, Taylor Davis, Randor Dudley; Second Row: Erran Smith, Robbe Hedstrom, Dan Reynolds, Jodie Yates, Bubba Johnston, Wayne Elmore, Brent Hiott, Tripp Waynick, Tripp Lee, Bill Lenz.
