Barbara J. Welton: During the past decade much has been learned about involving students in ed- ucational planning. Upperclassmen have seen and been a part of increased student involvement right here at Wilson College. Students handle information responsibly; many of them are mature in arriving at decisions; they care about relevant curricula, effective teaching methods and efficient administration. Clearly, whether active or passive participants in the aca- demic community, students care enough about it to want to be heard when they have ideas. Now that we have acknowledged the student resources available to us, there is promise of edu- cational institutions not only keeping abreast of change, but giving leadership to it. Martha Church, Dean of the College ..v at 6?... W O l a. a 0n. Barbara J. Weiton, Dean of Students Martha Church: As chairman of one committee on which students are serving and as a member of three others on which they have served or are serving, i have found direct access to student opinion most helpful in commit- tee considerations. Now, students are assisting depart- ment chairmen in meeting and talking with candidates for teaching postFa new area of responsibility ap- preciated, no doubt, by students and certainly by candi- dates. In another direction, the faculty and officers who sit with Senate have been impressed, for the most part, with the cooperation which is evident between students and faculty as important issues are considered. Mutual respect and trust have been enhanced by the changes in governance that have come in recent years at Wilson. But these changes could only have come because of the insistence down through the years-by each of Wilsonis presidentkthat every individual was important and that his or her views were worth hearing. Upon this basic tenet an entire network of shared responsibilities has been buiit4n important tribute to presidential leader- ship at Wilson College.

Kathleen King: I support student involvement both in campus issues and policy making, and in the social problems which, if left unsolved, are a threat to our existence. Institutions of higher learning should be taking steps to foster student concern and involvement. I think it would be appropriate for a college like Wilson to provide for eead hoc courses to supply the relevant scholarly and intel- lectual background to subjects of active student concern.
