LI In appreciation of ner interest and friendship freely given to us and our college, we, the class of nineteen hundred and tI'1I1'ty-I'lI1'16, dedicate this CONOCOCHEAGUE to Nlrs. Paul Swain Havens, Wife of our president. N Q I is X IJ MRSQ HAVENS SETTING H O 0 O O I 0 O I 0 O O 0 O I 9 O O I Xfvhat setting is to a motion picture, a campus is to a college. True, We talk of college being people, rather than build- ingsg but our campus with its spacious yet not too vast stretches of lawn and trees, its brick walks, its rippling Conoco- cimeague, and its friendly buildings is more a part of our life than We imagine. There is the Victorian charm of Main, whose porches, court, and pleasant rooms have been the stage for many plays rang- ing from the dignity of a college presi- c1ent's inauguration through the regular- ity of the morning treic from chapel to VVartieici to the Haunting traciition of Dummy Rush. From the iiocicey tieici and tennis courts to companionaloie club house the scene is iaici ,for campus activities. Vvithout the gentle slope Iaeyonci Lortz May Day would lose its pageantry, and without its sun-Heciceci ivy the iiiarary would lose its friendly Warmth. in this setting We have played our parts -vivacious, genial, conscientious, eager'- not often aware of our acting, lout iiving wiioieiieartecliy and vigorously. T she Flood on time Conococtieague and picnics on time lawn behind the club houses, Every corner a goaiu on time hockey field and the tluud of iioofs in the riding ring- tne reei unfolds the setting for many a Wilson scene. And in time scene develop the characters. The cast which forces itself into the picture with its tunics and jocipiiurs, its mascots and fantas- tic signs and pennants round out that element we casually can setting. The cast goes to stepsinging and to chapel. It argues veiue- mentiy in iouii sessions or muses quietly Wiiiie gazing on time ciis- tant mountains. Some oi its memioers seek seii-expression in writing or in music, Wiliie otiiers strive to siioot time winning iaasicet. The properties are iaiue ioooics, test tubes, and aiarnn ciocits, foils, ciancing sandals, and racquets, and a iiost oi other timings. And so the reei is turneci to reveal time cast in aii its minor and major roles. D 1 305513 lgig PRODUCERS O I I O 0 0 O I O O O Memory is a strange thing. By a per- verse quirk of mind we all too easily forget facts and remember fanciesfor, if you like, forget details and remember only the general form and shape and impression. And so this Iooolc is of real value to everyone who has shared in the life of Wilson College during the year. It pre- serves many of the details which time so easily erases'-cletails worthy of preserv- ing for the Hrecorclu in this workmanlilce way-and at the same time it suggests on nearly every page memories which will grow more vague, and yet more precious, with the years. The value and meaning of our experiences will remain long after we have forgotten the date and place of ttlem, and even the people who shared in them. The volume sums up not only this academic year, lout also one part of the meaning of college. It seems to say that the ultimate significance and pleasure of what we do are somehow conditional upon a full command of the facts, as the fragrance of perfume upon the hundreds of blossoms carefully gathered. Paul Swain Havens. On tlie eve of luer retirement, we talce tlais opportunity to tluanlc our dean, Miss Lillian lVl. Rosenlcrans, for all slie lias clone for us. Her alole Willing spirit lmas influenced the wlnole college. Slme has laeen an aflalole patron of our social ac' tivities as well as an efficient aclviser in tllings academic. Slie has lielpecl im- measuralaly to malfe our lite luere pleasant, sale, and Wortll.-Wllile. We will miss ller gracious presence in lier official capacity lout we shall seelc l'1er company still as one wlio has the interests of tlfne college always at lmeart. PRODUCERS ............ Mus. The History of the Class of 1958, pleasefx I announced to the expectant student behind the librarians desk. By Eighty-Six Seniors. ltis a new hook'-just outf, Oh-I donyt think that,s. on reservef, she said slowly as she came hack after a moment having Mac Iverys Society under one arm and Fagnanfs Primer of Hebrew under the other and regard- ed both doulotfully. No,', I said, Hthese are fine, but they aren,t comprehensive enough. I want The History of-In 'Just what sort of hook is it?', asked the librarian, who put in an appearance at exactly the right moment. nYou've seen it around, I know! I cried. HIt,s a story of a four-year so- journ Ioy the eighty-six surviving so- journers. The scene is laid at Vvitson College and the surrounding country- side, and the action is mainly con- cerned with the doings of a horde of freshmen who marched up in the au- tumn of 1954-armed with silver napicin rings and hiacic gym stocicings. One of the opening chapters is caiied 'Too Much Green, or How to Decorate a Room., There are notes on stunts, on ice-skating, hig sisters. ietters from home, and hygiene writtens. Certain person- alities ioegin to emerge from the ranks, although aimost ali of them are atfectionateiy caiied 1Roomie., Hin Part II the piot has thickened consider- ahiy. New recruits try to outwit the regulars at the annual Dummy Rush. They sigh en- viousiy as they drape themselves over invisihie hannisters at Prom time. The militant tone is kept up hy continual struggles for and against the eariy kings of Rome. Some go for a joy- ride with Xenophon. At the end of this part they attempt to maice a daisy chain hut it rains. uNext you see the young authors in a rather grown-up stage. Many of them have become big sisters. They taice advanced courses, and sit near the front in chapei. AH through this part are a iot of teas, parties in the room across the hail, horrowings of lecture notes, hysterics over negiigent Prom partners, amassings of quantities of hooks, ancient term papers, pii- iows, odd spoons,- 'KAnd in the iast you see them in caps and gowns racing chapei-ward at 8:25 A. M. There are stiii the impromptu gatherings around the fruit-cakes from home. The ice stiii lures them away from ethics and philosophy papers. The suh-piots are endless'-there are at least eighty- six of them! This whoie iast section is iiiied with pians and amiaitions-some realized, some just hegun-and a wonderful sense of heiong- ing, and a curious unrest at the thought of inevitahie separation. Yes, I am sure there are a few tears on the pages near the endwn The iihrarian iooiced at me thoughtfully for a moment. Hvve have a hook iike that, she said, 'shut it is in manuscript form as yet. I believe the date of puhiication vviii he June 14, 1938. If you want that-fu I had forgotten, you see, that the hook had not heen quite completed, that the sojourn had not come to a final end. So I tooic the uneven stack of sheets giadiy and went away to pore over them again. ALBERTA E. LANG. Charlotte Alohot Flora B. Acheson lVlary VV. Adams lVlary Anne Amhler Dorothy tl. Zimmerman CLASS As a class We are privileged. To hegin with, we had the unique privilege of coming to Wilson in the same year as President Havensg and hy choosing this propitious year, we chose an undeniably nice year in which to graduate. Nineteen hundred and forty is, to our ears at least, a heautifui numher. It has a well round- ed, complete sound which is gratifying espe- cially to an even. Besides these two privileges which are the personal property of our class, we have the privileges of every sophomore class of Wilson. We came hack from summer vacation, eager to see our friends: and college, with its assur- ing famiiiarity, was almost like a second home. During Vacation we had wondered intermit- tently about the incoming freshmen, Intangible and a hit mysterious they had seemed theng hut here they were hefore our eyes, quite con- crete, and very interesting. We had an im- pulse to show them around, whether they need- ed our help or not. The juniors and seniors, less remote and awful than last year,s juniors and seniors, we greeted as friends on nearly our own level. And we were sophomores and had the right to tyrannize over the freshmen for a whole week! At first it felt queer not to he freshmen. We found ourselves connecting hiacic gym suits with seniors, and we automatically held doors, even for freshmen. But we were not so slow to realize our rights. We watched the fresh- I-IISTGRY men squirm in Hack stoclcingsg we frowned grimly when they left their name cards Ioehinclg we assured them with a knowing air that they would live through their exams. Sometimes the freshmen have jarred us out of this super- ficial patronizing attitude of ours hy their en- ergy. their sophistication, or their keen under- standing. Gradually we have learned to know more and more of the seniors and juniors hy name, and we have made more friends among them. Even the most serious faculty memloer, we have discovered, has a sense of humor lurking some- where. We have gained a fuller understand- ing of people whom we knew before. There is one privilege peculiar to sophomores not only in Wilson but in other colleges also. Sophomores may he as serious as they please, anct, at the same time, as silly as they please. Of course there must he a mixture of foolish- ness ancl sense: some of us have learned hy experience that it is not jucticious to overdo either one. A year in college has given us responsibility, but not to the extent of sup- pressing our high spirits. After planning our schedules for the next two years with the great- est thoughttulness and concentration, we dash down therhall and gleefully clump the contents of our friends' bureau drawers in one grand mass on their hects. Cnty a sophomore has the right to he a wise foot. HENRIE'U'1X JAXNDREWVS. Catherine Clay Aclams Helen lvl. Ambler Elizabeth Anclerson Louise lvl. Anclerson Dorothy R. Arnold Ruth Atlcins Carolyn L. Zurhow 33 Dear CoNococHEAcuE: We are three months and a vacation old, and so we want to hurst into print and tell all we,ve learned. We Weren't very sure of anything ,way hack there in September, hut it's nice now to re- member the brick walks bordered with us in white on each side, and our first chapel exer- cise. We were delighted to find that there was a large Freshman Chorus, allowing practically all of us to have the chance to lift our voices in song. We didrft learn our words until the last minute, true, hut how we enjoyed the sing- ingi Probably at the concert we were the only ones who did, hut We don,t care-fit was fun! CLASS We look hack with amazement on the night we didn,t know where the lower clubhouse, or Lortz, or the Riding Ring were, hut we also rememher what a grand time we had eating toasted marshmallows around an enormous fire. Grasshoppers still are the least popular of the insect family with us, hut hiacic stockings and name-cards hold no more terrors. We wonder if the first Sunday Vespers made you feel the way We did? And We do like chapel, in spite of our cuts on the days of writtens. Many of us still have the lanterns we carried in the Color Ceremony. Then, perhaps for the first time, We realized all of what Wilson means: the white dresses and the hright lights, that HISTORY were only spots in the darkness until they drew close to us, and the souncl of the Alma Nlater being caught and sung again and again-it is our Ioveliest memory, and one which means much to us. By the night before Dummy Rush, we had the feeling of belonging to Wilson, and were determined to prove our worth on the hockey field next day. We c1iclHtriumpt1antIy bringing the Sophomore Dummy, proudly clis- playing our own, and winning a well-played hockey game. We had been looking forward to Thanksgiving for a long timeg we were not disappointed. Need we say more? Christmas was a long time in coming it seemed, and yet now, it looks as if the Clays must have flown by, for before we knew it we were leaving and needless to say, before we knew it we were back againt After the first sigtis for late nights un- hampereci by registration, we went to work again with a Will'-fthe will to pass our exams. Yes, vveyve learned a lot: about European History and Freshman English, of the beauty of snow on the campus, and the intricacies of uflitf' of Boiens, and not-fuclge sundaes, and of getting to breakfast on time and the early morning P. 0. rush: but most of all we have learned to love the spirit of Wilson and to strive to make it our own. Always yours, THE CLASS or ,41. JUNICR Presizle nt ........ ...,..,... E THEL THONIPSON Treasurer ...,.... KATHARINE Cl-XAPIN In Three Men in a Boat hy Jerome K. Jerome there is a fox- terrier named Nlontmorency who, when his master was packing for a trip, nthought the lemons were rats, and had got in the hamper and killed three of them hefore Harris coulcl land him With the frying panf, The seventy-four of us who have remained together these three years do not, of course, have the sort of impression ahout Wilson that poor, deluded Nlontmorency had ahout the lemons. From. the day We first arrived on campus, heavy-laden and a little frightened, to this present clay, Wilson has consistently shown herself a pleasant, friendly place where people Work hard cheer- fully and play together. Like Nlontmorency, we were young and foolish at first. We were brought to our senses, heing landed with frying pans in the shape of hiology Writtens, sprung quizzes, and term papers, Eng- lish and otherwise which had to he complete with foot-notes, hihiiographies, and outlines. Sometimes the process was accom- plishect hy the less painful method of a conference with a faculty memher surprisingly sympathetic. A fevv of us even reached the point where a good marlc on a written or an unexpected word of praise could compensate, in part, for an empty mail hox. 36 CLASS HISTORY As Sophomores we tried to make evident, especially to the Freshmen, that we had learned to distinguish the lemons from the rats. Whichever We chased, we chased enthusiastically. Very knowing, we were explaining traditions to the Freshmen. Qcca- sionaliy we were even solemnly didactic to them on the evils of overwork and late hours which, we said, would give them nervous hreakdowns and force them to leave this wonderful place. ixfiost of the time We forgot to let others proht hy our yearys experience and lived along happily, enjoying to the full Wlont Alto Day and Thanksgiving, singing in the Choral Club instead of Fresh- man Chorus, skating on the Conococheague, and Working hard. In the spring we were excited and deeply impressed by the inauguration ceremonies for our president. Now in our Junior year We are truly just beginning to com- prehend aii that Wilson can mean. We work harder than ever, so We say. Every now and then a serious thought occurs to us, K'After college, Whatff' In a year and a half We shall all turn from ixfiontmorencies into Harrises. The Underclassman Prom of the night before was now a thing of the past. All attention was centered on the pageant to be. Qur impromptu dances of joy in the morning at some patches of blue in the sky were for naught. Later the rain poured in torrents from a rumbling, black sky. Would we have the pageant? No, the Wlay Queen would be crowned in the gym. Uh, how disappoint- ing! AH morning our guests and we trotted back and forth from building to buildingflooking at the sky with worried eyes, but saying smilingly to each other, Ch, it will clear this afternoon. At noon came the announcement that, unless it was clear by two- thirty, the hflay Queen would be crowned in the gym and the pageant dispensed with for the time being. Happily, it cleared. A merry, bright sun came out and dried the grass so quickly that the carpet laid down to protect the royal feet was not absolutely necessary. A dashing herald grandty warned us to Hivtaice way for Her Nlajesty, the Queen of the Nlaytn As the horseman galtoped out of sight, the court in flowing pastel robes came down the hill. The bouncing, little jester, between pranks, bundled up the carpet. Hands clapped, cameras clicked, the sun beamed, as the court, graceful and dignified, seated itself about the Queen. Her Niajesty received the gifts of the World, the Footstool, the Scepter, and the Crown. The pageant was presented for the Queen. The Upper Class Informal that evening, good-byes and depart- ings next day completed the May Day festivities. The Queen, her maid of honor, and the five senior attendants are pictured in the single shots on these two pages!Georgiana Macltvaine, Janet Swinehart, Marian Jones, Edith Harden, Julia Dunn, Catherine Hildebrand, and Nlyrtte McCauley, respectively. 129 Cast The Moorivprincess ....,......... .,...,.. The story is ol a laamlooo-cutter and his Wife who lived all alone, childless, and apart from other people. At their worlq in the field and the cottage, they longed for a daughter to hrighten their home. To them, escorted hy her maidens all clad in shining, white raiment, came the Moon-Princess over a curving white loridge, to live as their child and to loeguile their loneliness. The lxfloon-Goddess, her mother, had answered their prayers. lVlany people came to rejoice with the hamhoo-cutter and his wife and to see this strange, new daughter. The loamlooo-cutter proclaimed a festival to celehrate their happiness. The singing and dancing were enjoyed lay all, even loy a passing hoatman and a group of traveling players, jugglers who happened along and stopped to amuse the gathering. I After a long time the little Moon-Princess, the Fame ol whose heauty had spread lar, was wooed hy three nohle lcnights and even loy the emperor himself. Each lcnight visited the small cottage and endeavored to gain the Princessls alttection lay giving her a gift. The first gave her tire wrapped in paper, a lanterng the second, wind wrapped in paper, a tang the third, music Wrapped in paper, a lute. The hrst two presents were olltered symloolically through loeautilul dances. ln the one, shimmering, flaming tire was gradually enclosed in the lanternys delicate hounds. ln the other, Japanese maidens coquetted gracefully and intricately with their fans. The emperor olltered her wealth and power. Some of his warriors displayed hefore her their prowess with the sword. Yet the Princess refused each otterg for she, loeing the daughter of a goddess, could marry no mortal. The next day the moon-maidens returned over the curving, white loridge to the loamlooo-cutterys cottage. They had come to talce the Princess home. She had fulfilled her mission and must seelc again her other lite. She hade farewell to the sorrowing hamlooo-cutter and his wile and returned to the moon, leaving them with the memories ol: their happiness. ,.4mn Daisy Chain Commencement Qverheard in the hallway-HVVhy do such swell girls have to graduate and leave us?H asked the freshman of her companion. They have their place to make in the world, just as we do after our tour years at Vvilsonf, The two girls, unaware of my presence, turned down the hail, teaving me with my reflections. Unwittingly, they had opened avenues of thought to whomever heard them. Their combined feelings were the same as the ones that I entertainedM I wanted to keep the seniors here hut I also wanted to watch them go out into the world. It was the old story of having oneys cake and eating it, too. Inquiry among my classmates revealed the same attitude-sadness at seeing our friends, hig sisters. some of them, leaders, advisers,-they had heen all of these to us'-'depart was comhined with a certain satisfaction in seeing them go out into the World to put into practice their splendid ideals, theories, and convictions. We were selfish and unseltish at the same time. 132 The last few days before the Commencement exercises were fun to overflowing. Saturciay evening the Kittochtinny Players presented the annual Shakespearean piayg this yearys choicewas Twelfth Night. Sunday brought the Baccalaureate Service anci the Alumnae Vesper Service at which the Buchanan Medal and the Vvarfieici Scholarship were presented. A triii Niont Alto day this year was characterized by several innova- tions. Instead of traveling out in the train, the college tool: to iousesg Dr. Niarstlaii kept a recorci of time happenings of the ciay with his movie camera: and a different spot was chosen for time picnic and speeches. The traditions are welcome friends to those who have been to Niont Aito inetore, and pleasing ac- quaintances to those to whom they are new. Tile mountain- ciimiaing expedition was as invigorating as everg and the ioasebait game was especiaiiy entertaining to iaotti students and faculty, and to spectators as weii as participants. A short session of the Big Apple compieteci the process oi' turning norrnat into ravenous appe- tites, and only the miraculous lunch serveci could return them to a state of contentment. As a perfect after-ctinner pastime came the speeches by the President anci the ciass presicients,-always differ- ent and always entertaining. Five months were spent in the con- struction of the four manuai Moller organ and five weeks for its instaiiation. The organ contains sixty ranics of pipes and two octaves of ioeiis. All iour manuais are under ueXpression,H or voiume controi. In addition to other mechanical accessories anci coupiers, there is the sforzancio and a speciai reversihie piston. The organ chamioer is over the stage, anci the music comes through the griii in the ceiling. The ioiower room is underneath the stage. The consoie, which was made to match the puipit, is movaioie. In great contrast to the oici organ, the new mechanism, which is operated hy remote controi, is silent. The organ was compieteiy instaiieoi ciuring Christmas vacation and was piayeci for the first chapel service in January. Un January 15, 1Q'j8, the organ was formally fieciicateci in a recital given hy Virgil Fox, the famous con- cert organist from Baitimore, and the only per- son who ever receiveci an artistys diploma from Peabody in one year. The New Organ In his introductory speech President Havens expiaineci why the cieciication of an organ was such an important ceremony at Xfviison Coi- iege. He said that there were two important reasons: the spiritual exercises at Vviison are associated with the organg Wilson, as a iiherai arts coiiege, is especiaiiy interested in the art of music, the art which most neariy touches the heart of man. The cieciicatory recitai of Virgil Fox was especiaiiy appropriate in dispiaying the wicie range of tonai quaiity in the organ. Every tone coior and every comhination of tone coiors was useci at some time during the oieciicatory re- citai. it is interesting to know that the new organ can play aii pieces that have ever ioeen written for the organ. Rooms and Meals by Day or Week PUBLIC OPINION CHAMBERSBURCHS NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATED PRESS NEA FEATURES According to an old legend, the discovery of the principle of print ing from moveable type was a matter of Pot Luckn . . The YOI-Ing S011 Of 3 dYe' maker accidentally dropped a Carved W00de11 mlual in a pot of dye. When he set this dyed letter on a skin to dry, it left an imprint- From this came printing. Printing today is a far cry from the days when it Was just a matter of 'iPot Luckfj Through the years, craftsmen have always striven to achieve better printing. Although the day of ine, but laborious, hand printing is over, the spirit of the craftsmen does not die. If, with the increasing demand for speed, fine books can no longer be printed by hand, it does not mean that fine printing will stop. It means, rather, that artisans and craftsmen will find POT LUCK another way to maintain the standards of their guild. The solution does not lie solely in machines that can cast more lines of type per hour, nor in presses that can print more pages per minute. The solution lies in machines in combination with skilled workers. Lyon and Armor were among the first to recognize this fact. And Lyon and Armor have supplied their personnel, all of them weaned on printeras ink, with the latest, most eflicient, printing equipment. The result is printing of the finer sort . . . at a speed in tempo with present day production.
