X UI 'IV U VY N SEPTEMBER TWENTY-FIFTH IT is Indian summer, and the hills across the Conococheague are already putting on their gypsy colors when Wilson girls come Ioaclc, eager to start another year of study and gay companionship. Reunions, Hue cards, remnants of that summer tan, chairs being painted on the fire escapes'-these are but fleeting glimpses of those first few hectic days. For the first time the freshmen meet their new room-mates, dash off to all sorts of tests, and in a flurry of excitement try to fix up their rooms. In the meantime upper class- p men start their again-tests!! on sum- mer activities and renew old ac- quaintances. Even before every- thing is unpacked, there are plans for the first informal, anticipa- tions of future -battles on the hockey field, and Hsmootif' ideas for club meetings. Every mo- ment of their time they cram full of Fun and gaiety, for they know tuclies will be- that an too soon s ' ' G will rush past 'n Thanksgivinb 't'es, and 811 , in a cloud of festivii Autumn will be over. ACADEM I C PROCESSION 14 A LINE of students along each side of the walk from Warneid Hail to Thomson Hail form a white-clad guard of honor. 'SHOW wonclerlulf, we have hearol some inclivicluals remarlc, uthinlc of the suspense. Wilson's Wlont Alto Day suf- lers by contrast-no suspense at allf, How ricliculousl As a matter ol fact, if these incli- vicluals will exercise their powers ot olaservation and their imaginations for a lew minutes, we are sure they will agree with us that the suspensef-in various forms-1 is the Uconnective tissueu of lVIont Alto Day. First ol all the freshmen, who have never been to hlont Alto on uthen clay, are eager to verify some of the tales with which the sophomores have loeen Hstullf- ingu themg the sophomores cannot wait to set the fresh- men to catching grasshoppers in retaliation for the alllictions of last year's sophomoresg there is always an upperclassman or two cleloating Hto go or not to gon in the lace of an overpowering staclc ofymore or less'-1 imaginary worlc or a headache: and the weatherl Every wisp of cloud sencls a unanimous shiver through every lauilcling anal prayer rugs come out to petition for, rain on Saturclay, if you must, lout clear lay Nlonclay- pleasef, Then there is the clecision, once you are there, of whether you will hilqe, play loaseloall, or Watch it, or continue to clance, or just sit ancl tallc. The laasehall game worlced up a little surprise for itself this year: the faculty won. It has always been a foregone conclu- sion, that that was the students' prerogative. Lunch finds 20 DAY you so hungry you wonder if, as at the feeding of the five thou- sand, a miracle will have to occur to satisfy you. The miracle al- ways occurs. And after lunch the speeches-it is always a won- der to hear people speak so charmingly and amusingly - and effectively-about nothing. Then, too, everyone is anxious to know how this little pet custom will he received hy the initiates, who this year included the president as well as the freshmen. But, of course, everyone always likes Wlont Alto Day. Last of ali, when you come home, you are very dubious in- deed as to whether you will he ahie to stay awake long enough to study for that written. The suspense, you see, lasts until the next clay. It is quite olovious now, we think, that Vviisoifs Wlountain Day has the advantage in mat- ters of suspense. Even if it had not. who would want to change with any other college anyway? But after a more intense con- templation of the scene, he discovered that oniy tide aitar ciotti was .1 init frayed and awry. That was a siigiit matter, and he muttered a sigh ot relief. Siigtlt matter, to be sure, but on further consideration tie was puzzled to distraction to ac- count for it. In spite of his confusion he walked steadfastly down the center aisle to uniocic and swing open time great studded doors as was his custom. Nlidway in this progression tie was stopped ioy time sound of some soft motion under tiue twentyfninth pew. He dropped to tits icnees and put his head to the ground. The first prayer custiion was in order. By time end of the second iay a heap of sawdust. There was a rodent, to be sure, and tie flourished a prayer iaooic. There was a dotted grey iine in swift succession towards the fourth column on the western side of the nave. The sexton hurried in grim pursuit. He found at the column no trace of his prey. The stiatt reactied aloft rigid and cold. At time top it inroiae forth to fashion acute arches. At the iaase it sponsored no mouse. The sexton returned with inarticuiate mutter- ings to repiace tide sawdust. Tile question of pro- fanity may be ieit as sucti. He crossed himself and proceeded to the rear. ixfietaiiic manipula- tions ensued, and ctliii shade Hooded 'tiirougii tiie doorway. As ine turned toward the aisle again, lie paused to observe the riciiiy colored suniigtmt which played upon ttle water in the font. it was a pretty tiling, lie ttiougtit. He retraced his way to time twenty-ninth pew to remove time cushion for repairs. Bacic to tile aitar tie went with it under his arm, ciasping the hole tigtitiy wittm iiis Hngers. He laid it on the step as tie gattlered up the dis- torted attar ciothg then tie piciced it up once more and with iaotii of the mutilated sacred oiojects proceeded to his woriq room in the basement. The sun now Feii in many colors and many patterns through the great transept and aiong the back Wait of time cathedral. 42 The mouse had scurried to tire tourtir cotumn, had encircled it, and iiad just as tiastity directed iris nose up to ttie soutti ciioir transept. Here tie reflected wtiimsicaity and innocently for time rest ot ttie day. it had been very pteasant in the custiion. He had revetted in the dissotute way of lite, and now tie lamented iris forced forfeiture ot it. He sired a tear iuettiinicing IIHTISQIIF a deplor- aioie martyr. At iris tirst awareness of a fresti dawn tie determined to explore ttie otterings ot time jangty ptace to wiiictr iris tiost iiad repaired after disturbing trim on ttie day inetore. He tiad not been attracted by time sound of it, it is true, but time possiiaitity of a siiicen coucii witiiin tiiis as yet unyielding' edifice caused a tigiit of eager- ness to dart in iris eye. He was oft. Over prayer- custiions and around pews and tiard by stone columns ire streatced untit tie was confronted by a forbidding watt. Up and away from iiipn was a tow stone column. He surmounted and would have crossed its open surface-but wittiin was a pooi ot water quite exceeding iris stature. inca- paiate and not fond of swimming tie fioundered and sptastred in a distressing manner. The sexton entered stiortty afterwards ivy ttie doorway opposite the altar. He rejoiced at the solemn order in ati ttiat presented itsett. He paused to iisten intently. A soothing sound of running water came to his ears and irritated him intensely. It came from ttie direction ot ttie great centrat entrance. Impossible-ttiere was no source ot water ttrerei Determining to maize investiga- tions iater tie proceeded to the Inactc as usuat. By his faitti, ttiere was violent agitation within ttie font. He crossed tiimsett in frigiittui aston- isiimentg ttaen tie invoiced the presence ot peace in Latin. ' The mouse tiad gained a ioottiotd in ins vigor- ous ettorts. He crouctied iatinicing precociousty on tile rim ot ttie receptacle. The Sexton repeated his inarticutate mutterings ot ttie previous day and ran to time tast pew for a prayer ioootq. The mouse twitciaed his taii and dropped to the itoor. Xwitti serenity of mind and precision ot motion tie approactied' tiie image ot St. Francis on the aiste of tire nave. Ttiere tie was wtien the sexton drew near with spirited gestures and the prayer taooic. But tide mouse was concealed toy the saint's ampie roioe. The sexton wept vetiementty wtien tie could not tind trim. Thereafter ttie mouse acknowledged St. Francis as iiis patron saint, and spent ttie rest of his iite in a tioty ettort toward self-discipline. -L3 REPRESENTING CI-Il TAU PI VVINDOVV-MOON by BETSIE HOPKINS Ricte hy, prouct moont Amt do not tootc on me. The tunes were confused and mingled in an outlandish pattern of sound. Sometimes one strain of melody would reach out and fit into another as two friends walked along the Conococheague-for sometimes there were clashing otiscords as roommates decided on a color scheme. Abruptly the music changed, and the Ioagpipes gave a mournful, twanging wail as writtens and term papers came along. But soon it was spring. and each hagpipe played a honnie highland melody With a few shrill notes now and then that seemed almost like the carctinaI's call. There was silence for a time, hut the Ioagpipes came 80 CLASS N Lxru' CI.lNKSC1XLIiS HISTORY again with renewed vigoria triumphant, martial strain -for we were sophomores. Then the room seemed very smau indeed as the hagpipes poured forth the anger of a wild mountain feud, and it was dummy rush. There were a few wistful notes at Prom time, a curious, mys- terious meiody at Pailadiums Birthday, and a broad, dancing hornpipe as vacation drew near. As juniors, our ears hecame attuned to the music, and we have learned to like the motley of sounds more than we ever dreamed-a confusion of memories- a friend P-1 that night We laughed and laughed over noth- ing H a Vespers talk - that hockey game we almost lost -not one great, definite melody, hut a rhapsody of scattered hagpipe tunes that somehow shape them- selves into a larger theme. And through it au, we are inclined to sympathize with the old Scotsman,s idea of heaven as Htxveniy hagpipers a, playin, tgither in a sma, room and each one playing a different tunef' fXLICE Si-IUTTS. On that night we excitedly put on our lovely new prom dresses and ctescenclect the royal stair to the parlors, our corsages quivering on our siioulcters, to meet the young man. And thence'- to the dance! The candle-lit dining room echoed with the strains of soft music and the mirror over the mantei shone with reflections of Iorigiitly colored dresses, ac- centuated Ioy formal Hack and White as We ctanced between courses of the din- ner. And after dinner, when the tables had been cleared away, we danced again '-lon and on until all too swiftly the hours had passed and the Prom was over. But Saturday night was still to come. Dancers took up again the music where they had left it, and whirled arouncl the snowy gym almost as swiftly as the col- ored lights on the ceiling. The snow- man on the stage winked his shoehutton eyes at all the merry couples, who were having their hest time of the whole year -it was still Prom week-end! Qur gay week-encl passed all too swift- ly, and with the soft strains of the minuet music, as on Monday night we watched the colonial ladies and gentlemen dance the traditional minuet, passed the very last of our Prom. bale fvliiie the whole worl ,qgpplbljpt-of.1-enqwedj from the rest, the warm life- giving sun. IP R N The hockey field is dotted with clancielions, and the hills are green again. Canoes glide up and clown the Conococheague, and all Wilson is out taking sun- iaaths. Spring murmurs on the walks and in the trees where the Ioircls have come back. We are being Indians or Japanese in the May Day pageant: we are play- ing tennis, taking pictures, going on picnics'-and we have spring fever. Someiiow, examinations are passed and Commencement iwas come. Anotimer year is over -perhaps time first, perimaps tiie last of tilose iiappy years is gfwne. P HILIPPA CONNOR QUEEN BESS AND COURT SCENES FROM F at the end of the year, a census were taken of opinions of freshmen as to which week-encl of the year is most outstanding in their memories, the unanimous verclict would he Nlay Day. Aside from Commencement, May Day draws in its train a longer, more diversified and more exciting sequence of events than any other occasion. Excitement has heen brewing for weeks in hectic rehearsals, noisy construc- tion of settings, and furious sewing of costumes and court dresses, to say nothing of the mysterious hammerings and ladder-scaiings in the construction of decora- tions in the gym. Friday night the excitement iooiis over, displaying itself in Himsy dresses and a heyy of gentlemen-fthe Under Class Prom. The hlare of an orchestra from the gym announces that the mysterious activities in that locality were nothing less than the preparations for the sophomore-freshman dance. Bustiing activity is afoot early Saturday morning. This is Nlay Day itself. THE COURT The quaint Niay-pole dances in the morning manage to draw an audience in spite of the scramble of last minute preparations and the distracting arrival of multitudes of guests. Afternoon brings the pageant and a hreeze that, far from chasing the heat, stirs up the dust into little tornadoes for the inno- cent hystander to combat as hest he can. Indian costumes appear and their Wearers, after disappearing for a time, reappear sporting remarkably swarthy countenances. Lovely flowing dresses and rich hrocades are in evidence. And one decides that it is time to wander pageant-wards. After the pageant, the visitors indulge in sightseeing, While upperclassmen work feverishly at last minute heautifying for the Upper Class Informal that night. The next day heing Sunday, there remains but to go to church, to take a long breath, and to give or to receive congratulations for another successful May Day. MAY DAY AKE way, make way, for their most august majesties the Queen of the May and the good Queen Be-ess!!! A heralcl, in pink satin and white plumes, discharges her ctuty at the top of her lungs and galiops off,-no one knows whereg for attention is quickly turned to the lovely Queen Bess and her court in their rich dresses-rose ancl hlue and gold and rust and green-which make clear at a glance the reason for the Elizabethan poet,s Iilcening his lady to a ship. The court glides in stately procession hefore the spectators and is scarcely seated on the throne at the left when the Queen of the lxflay herself appears with her attend- ants. The youthful company, clresseot in the pastel counterparts of the Queen Bess dresses, occupy the other throne. The dignity of history and the freshness of a younger world smile at each other while the children scatter flowers and the impish jester in a Icnave-of-hearts cos- tume perpetrates a hundred delightful atrocities. PAGEANT The gifts are presented to the queen, an unseen signal is given, and an at once the spectator finds himself aware of the tepees and fires of the Indian village on tiie green stage, of Indians on the island in the bacicgrouncl, and of a canoe slip- ping swiftly downstream. Another canoe appears. The tepees open and yieicl lnraves, squaws, and little girls. The pageant has begun. First is tile dance of Dawn. in wilicim the indians receive Fire from the Dawn. Then, a symbolic dance-Niorning Star. daughter of time South, vanquisliing Vvin- ter-pictures the theme of the 'pageant- story of love, Capture, and return. As we Consider it now, freshman year will always stand out for the Wicte- cyect amazement at the very newness of things, for name cards and black stockings, for rowdy games of uSarctines and secretive plans for dummy rush, for Sunday afternoons along the Conococheague and last minute cramming for the hygiene final-a year in which we entered a new World and were one of the gang. But then there was sophomore year-and what a year that was! We worried the tives out of the freshmen ancl spent most of our time thinking up Hctastardly deeds. We became worlctly-wise and took philosophy. We wore plaid ear- mutfs and got tive or six letters every ctay. We carried the daisy-chain and toolc our knitting wherever we went. As juniors, we hecarne conscious that we were upperciassmen. We made hig preparations For our last two years hy huying a new pair of hrown and white saddle shoes. It was the year of utittle sistersf, canoeing in the inlet, and three heipings at txflont Alto. It was the year of our first hig Prom-fctancing ever so clivinety white the freshmen hung over the hanister. And so we finally came to he seniors. VX7e suddenly ctiscoverect ourselves in 146 CLASS LORRAINE EL1-swoRr1i Secretary PEGGY VVALKER 7'l'9L'lS LLFQI' HISTORY that very group which we had looked up to for three years. We founci ourselves in tile front seats in chapel and at the head of the tables. But most of au in our senior year, we have found a new spiritg We have a sense of being a init older and an iciea of having found something in college which we had never realized before, something deep and fine which is best expressed in the echo from step-singing on a spring night or in the blue of the clistant mountains when time sun is setting. it is hard to say just what it is, but it is what we felt when we First put on our cap and gown, sometliing intangible and invisiioie, but always present. Anti so goes the story of four years. You will probably find it like that of any other class. We Iaaverft clone a great many outstanding things, but We've run true to form. Just as last year's class We,ve had our good moments and our load. VVe've replaced all the incicientai snapshots we once had around our mirror by one big picture of HHVI. We have learned to taice it and can even forgive our roommate when slime returns from the Roman Banquet gariaeci in a toga and a few sweet peas. Xwe have iearneci many things from books, and friends, and quiet hours alone. But above all else, we have emerged from our class and become a part of our College. As seniors, we are looking aiieaci to the years to Come, made confident and hopeful by tiiose we are leaving lmeiiinci. Official Photographers to the 1938 Conococheague - SARONY STUDIOS 1206 Chestnut Street Philadelphia Translating the Year Book editor's ideas into a book oi beauty and ever-increasing interest requires the services of a highly skilled printing organization, of which Lyon G Armor, Inc., is an outstanding example. Here are craftsmen who special- ize in Year Book work: who this year are producing 44 Annuals, lor institutions in tive states. Yet they regard each book as a separate challenge of their artistry, whether as type-setters, proof-readers, make-up experts or press men. They are aided by complete, modern equipment, much of it designed especially for Year Book work. The ingenious spray gun, shown in foreground, prevents ink smears as your pages speed through the press. We've installed the latest spray gun equip- ment to prevent annoying oiisettirtg : a new line up table to insure perfect page margins: and many other devices to make your Year Book better. These are recent additions to our already unusual facilities, including a battery of linotype machines, and press equipment for producing several books at once. Our wide type assortment, with both domestic and foreign laces. permits distinctive eitects to suit the tastes of all editors. - If you're planning a Year Book, call Walnut 0234 and let us tell you the lull story ol Lyon S Armor's complete, dependable service. Skilled printers. with such equipment as this new make-up table, assure you of a book ol which you may be proud. LYGN ARMCR 147 N.
