PERRY We, the Class of 1987, have chosen to dedicate our Crest to a man we all know and love, Mr. Allyn Perry. Mr. Perry has helped all of us in some way, from taping athletes’ injuries to just offering a kind word when it was needed. With his quiet manner and shy smile, he has made our gym classes a lot of fun. In 1962, Mr. Perry was graduated from Akron Central School with a Regents diploma. He then attended Fairmount State College in West Virginia, majoring in physical education and minoring in social studies. While there. Mr. Perry was on the Deans List twice. In 1966 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in physical education. He has also done graduate work at the University of Buffalo. Mr. Perry has taught in Wilson for twenty years. Throughout his career, he has coached many teams. He began in 1967 as Assistant J.V. Football coach, 9th Grade Basketball coach, and Assistant Baseball coach. For the next two years, he led the J.V. football and basketball squads. In 1970, he coached J.V. Football and Girls J.V. Softball. This same year, he also began his six-year career as Varsity Basketball Coach. From 1975 to 1985, Mr. Perry served as Assistant Varsity Football Coach. In 1982, he took his current position as Boys J.V. Basketball coach. Mr. Perry lives with his wife, Marilyn, in the village of Wilson. The Perrys have three children — Jean, Jan, and Scott — who have all graduated from Wilson. Mr. Perry is also active in the community as a member of the W’ilson Fire Company. From our sunrise as freshmen to our sunset as seniors, Mr. Perry has been with us all the way. MEMORIAL FORMER BUS DRIVER SADLY MISSED On August 12, 1986, one of the most loved and experienced bus drivers in the Wilson School District was taken from us. Mrs. Connie Colliver began her bus driving career in September 1957. For twenty-nine years, Mrs. Colliver served the Ransomville Bus Lines as the driver of the kindergarten run. Mrs. Colliver and her husband of forty-one years, Ray Colliver, lived on New Road in Ransomville. Their four daughters and six grandchildren all graduated from or are presently attending Wilson. Mrs. Collivers’ employer, Paul Schultz, said that she is greatly missed because she was one of his most loyal workers. Parents of the youngsters that rode on Mrs. Collivers’ bus remarked on how she treated the children. One mother said, “She even drove the children right to the door if it was a stormy day.” We believe that the sunlight Mrs. Colliver brought to all those she met has not vanished. In our hearts, her sun has set to rise again. 11 MAKING MEMORIES When asked five years ago if she was interested in the position of yearbook advisor, Mrs. Roberta Taylor readily agreed. She replaced Miss Moore, who filled the job before her. Mrs. Taylor is experienced in the field because she was the Activities Editor of the Crest when she was a student at Wrilson High. Our very own Mr. Kent was the advisor at the time. We talked with Mrs. Taylor about some of the mysteries of yearbook production. Many students wonder how the dedication is chosen. She explained that the process changes from year to year. This year, the staff voted on nominations. The only people who know of the decision before yearbooks are distributed are Mrs. Taylor, the Layout Editor, Copy Editor, and the Editors-in-Chief. This year’s theme was selected through a similar process. The group discussed many ideas and finally decided on Sunrise, Sunset.” The entire staff tries to keep these two secrets from the student body to create suspense. We asked Mrs. Taylor how a student earns a position on the staff. She responded by saying that all a student needs to do is to “indicate an interest in being on the staff and to demonstrate his her readiness to work.” She also stated the benefits that students receive from working on the staff. The young people get experience in working with others and the opportunity to exercise their creativity.” They also learn much about themselves and their school. Mrs. Taylor added, The staff gets the chance to see their ideas come to FRUITION!” (In other words, they see the product of their work. Spoken like a true English teacher!) Most importantly, the yearbook is a great chance to help your class and still have tons of FUN! EDITORS 1. Activities — Renee Bateman 2. Classes — Alicia Kowalchuk 3. Faculty — Beth Attfield 4. Bateman Students at WCS are gaining experience in governing themselves as members of the Senior High Student Council. This group acts as representatives of the entire student body to bring grievances to the principal and new ideas about the curriculum and school rules. The Student Council sponsors many annual events, including Homecoming and Moving Up Day festivities. Another favorite of the students is the semi-formal Christmas Dance in December. To raise funds for others, the third annual Variety Show to benefit Muscular Dystrophy was held. All senior high students are encouraged to join Student Council to have a voice in their school life. The students are represented by a classmate from each homeroom that serves on the council. This student then reports to his peers about what is up-and-coming in their school. The group sponsors many dances for the benefit of the junior high. A dollar from each ticket from the Halloween Costume Dance went to benefit UNICEF. The council also betters the school itself by such things as planting trees in the yard on Arbor Day. Another major project was a student exchange with Newfane. Officers Chi Nguyen, Heather Bradley, Kelley Caswell, and Karrie Lort have certainly led the council to a very productive year! Row 1: M. McKernon, N. Nguyen, T. McCabe, K. Huffier Row 2: H. A sophomore needs an average of 93 or better. Juniors must maintain a 90 gpa and seniors must demonstrate an ability of 88 or more. This is not the only requirement, however. Service, leadership, and character are also highly stressed. Once admitted into the society, an NHS member has many opportunities to serve his community. Our local chapter works at several bloodmobiles throughout the year. Another worthwhile project is the sale of daffodils to benefit the American Cancer Society. The group guides parents at open house and the senior citizens at their annual breakfast in December. The Wilson Historical Society is also grateful for the help that NHS members give them at their fair in May. It is obvious that the National Honor Society is not merely based on academics, but rather on all aspects that make a good citizen. Sr. High National Honor Society Row 1: V. Faye Row 2: P. Hylinger The Lakemen Journal is produced by a group of Jr. High students who are experiencing the newspaper business for the first time. Under the direction of Mrs. Moley-Palacios and Mrs. Derrick, these students write articles that are published in a monthly paper. Some of the articles are based on interviews of teachers or students of the month. They also have an editorial page on which the opinions of Jr. High students appear. “Hats-off” submissions are included also. The Sr. High paper — “The Lake-man Spirit”, is published monthly by senior high students who are interested in modern journalism. This paper highlights many school events, and also includes a list of Honor Roll members each marking period. The 10 members on this staff work very hard to include as much factual and entertaining information as is possible for the WCS student body. Row 1: D. Clapp, J. Ewald, R. Wagner, A. Miller Row 2: C. They are to develop unique presentations for their solutions. A combination of long-term scores, spontaneous scores, and style points determine the winners. Last year, the students who are now seniors won the Regionals competition in Division 3, the highest division. For their long-term problem, they had to take a painting from a famous artist and interpret it in a skit. Their solution was based on a painting by Picasso entitled “Great Art Livea. The team went on to tie for 4th place at the state competition. This year's long-term problem is similar to last year’s. It is called Poetic License. The students have to take a famous poem and interpret it in a skit. With much confidence from winning at last year’s competition, the senior team of 5 girls looks forward to another successful year. Once a week, the club members meet to oppose one another in the thrilling game of chess. The Club has three double-elimination tournaments each year with prizes awarded to the champion of each tournament. Team tournaments are also held. Club members say that this activity is a good way to forget about the pressures of their normal school day yet, at the same time, exercise their brains. ! ii ii i Row 1: V. Hillman, E. The group traveled to Kissing Bridge on Mondays after school, for a full afternoon of skiing. They returned to the high school at approximately 10 p.m. Kissing Bridge Ski Resort offers a variety of trails for anyone from a beginner to an expert. The more daring skiers tackle the slopes with huge moguls. Some of the club’s skiers took a trip to Vermont, one that is sure to hold long time memories. Above — Row 1: K. Julias. S. Hobart, B. Staff, under the direction of Mr. Baron, greets us every morning and informs us of our sports events and all our extra-cirricu-lar activities. The students audition for their positions at the beginning of the year and work on a rotating schedule with two students working the announcements each week. Being on the staff helps the students develop public speaking skills which could prove very useful to them in the future. Capture The Moment The Photo Club, led by Mr. Waite and president Erik Rash, takes pictures for the school newspaper and yearbook. The members capture the moments of our school activities such as our senior citizens' breakfast, National Honor Society events, Moving-Up Day and the many other activities that Wilson students participate in. The group also enters photos in contests and will be learning to develop their own film. This club gives students a chance to learn much about the exciting world of photography. Row 1: J. HERO hopes to improve enrollment in Home-Economics courses in our school, also. The make-up club, with Mrs. Taylor in charge, learns about stage make-up and its application. The club is in charge of doing the make-up for the school and town plays and musicals. This year they made up the faces of the cast of Li'l Abner, our Jr. Sr. Play. The group also does demonstrations at the school’s annual Senior Citizen’s Breakfast. Some of the members said they enjoy working with the make-up and have a lot of fun putting it on people they know. Putting On he Glitz Row 1: A. Shepherd, J. Hillman, A. Zastrow, S. DiPaolo, P. This is a contract between two friends that says one will stay sober and adopt the other so that the adoptee will not drive if he drinks. Instead, the adoptee will call his sober friend for a ride. We hope this program will be a great success. Members of S.A.D.D. hope to generate the positive attitude about not drinking and driving to all students. Manus Latinus The I atin Club, a new language club headed by Mr. Rodgers, is composed of 45 members, 7th-12th grade. The club hopes to participate in county activities, many field trips, and community service activities. In the spring, the club hopes to hold a Roman slave sale, in which the members of the club will “sell themselves to senior citizens to do odd jobs for them. This will raise money for the newly formed club, while also continuing the Roman theme of the club. In April, the club hopes to compete in a Roman competition in which over 500 Western New York high schools participate in Roman games, that reflect all aspects of the Roman lifestyle. Mr. Rodgers states that the purpose of the Latin Club is “to have fun learning about Roman culture and the way they lived.” The officers of the club were chosen as the ancient Romans were chosen, and the club’s goal is to simulate Roman government. In April, the group will head for the Grand ’Old Opry in Nashville for their trip. Many fundraisers have helped raise money for this trip, and Miss Moore herself sells hats and cushions at many school activities. Some members choose to perform in the NYSSMA Solo Festival, and some members are chosen to sing in the All-County Chorus. The girls are very busy all year long as all of these activities take place. One member says that he enjoys being in the band because “It’s a fun and easy way to enjoy music!” After travelling to Washington D.C. last year, the band competed in the Festival of Nations where they earned a silver medal. This second place award was regarded as a very prestigous achievement according to one of their adjudicators. The band hopes to continue this level of achievement in the future. The Jazz Ensemble is a group directed by Mr. Schessl, consisting of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, drums, and keyboards. They meet on Tuesdays after school for practice. Some of the pieces they have played are “This End Up”, “Olde Stage Station , The Song for Parents , “Pretty One , and Soul Man . One of the members said, “Jazz Ensemble is better than regular band because it’s more informal, so we have more fun.” This seems to be the general consensus of all the members. Their performances include the Festival of Lights at the Rainbow Center in Niagara Falls, the Senior Citizen’s Day Breakfast, the Variety Show, and the spring concert The Jazz Ensemble also does special performances such as last year’s faculty dinner at the Boathouse and the Niagara Wheatfield Fund Raiser. Pasquale What is BOCES? A student currently studying at BOCES says it is a great alternative to college education. The acronym BOCES represents the Board of Cooperative Educational Services. The program is open to juniors and seniors in many area high schools, including Wilson Central. Juniors spend their afternoons at the BOCES Center in Sanborn. Seniors are at the center for the first half of the day. Students are offered many different choices of study. The most popular choices of majors include cosmetology, data processing, health careers, food service, diesel, auto mechanics, and welding. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared for a career. Many students at BOCES were asked what they liked best about the program. A common answer was that is a good opportunity to meet people from other schools. It also offers the student a “challenge.” One student commented that he prefers hands-on training to classroom instruction. BOCES may be just the thing for you. HARRISON PROGRAM Harrison Seniors — Left to Right: S. Rohring, J. Szczes, T. Banks Six Wilson High School students are presently participating in the Harrison Co-op program. The internship, instituted last year at Wilson, combines regular classroom instruction with practical work experience at the Lockport Harrison Radiator Division. The students spend two weeks at Lockport Senior High School in classes with their fellow workers. The next two weeks are devoted to working hand-in-hand with an employee right at the plant in Lockport. Through this rotating schedule, the students earn their high school degrees while gaining experience in various fields of engineering. 54 CLASSES THRIVING ... Harrison Juniors — Left to Right: G. Kopeck, A. Diachun Admittance to the program is very competitive. Each year, Harrison’s receives from 80 to 100 applications from area high school juniors and seniors. Only about 30 are selected to be interviewed. From this group, a mere 16 are chosen to participate. Steve Rohring, a senior in the program, commented on the best part of the deal. He thinks, “It is a very good opportunity to get a headstart in the business world.” Steve also said it is a great chance to “work with others and gain responsibility.” Many students agree that the worst aspect is leaving friends at Wilson. However, the benefits gained from the Harrison program are invaluable. CLASSES 56 settlors 59 David M. Adamson Lor, Clarence, Lucy Locket... 4631 Shadigee Rd., Newfane... French, Math, Science... We’ve come to the end of our senior year! No more rallies, assemblies or games, just lasting memories of faces and names. No more lockers or books or even tests. We now face a challenge of making the best! Graduation ended with hugs tears, lots of laughs jokes and faded cheers. Good-bye to teachers, buddies, and friends; where each is headed, it all depends. As we leave WCS with control and smiles, we now face the journey of many miles. But we’ll see each other now and then. For us Seniors of “87”, our year has come to an end. 'Wilson Matmen” High school wrestling proves to be one of the most demanding sports a student can participate in. The athlete is required to keep his body strong while keeping his weight down. Sometimes, a wrestler must lose up to ten pounds to make weight for his match. Once his contest begins, it is a constant struggle for two minutes at a time. All responsibility falls on the wrestler himself because it is such an individual sport. The J.V. Varsity teams at Wilson are composed of 20 motivated individuals led by J.V. coach George Mayer and Varsity coach Roger Hutchinson. What makes them want to be a part of this team? Bill Faery said it gives him a “challenge. Senior Gary Freischlag wrestles to keep in shape.” He likes wrestling because it is an individual sport but still a part of a team. W'e were not thinking of our future, only of the strange person with whom we had to spend half of our day. To think — our biggest challenge was finger painting! We spent the next seven years getting to know the other kids in our half of the district. We most enjoyed playtime, our early equivalent of study hall! Stevenson students participated in talent shows, winter show carnivals, and (when we were sixth graders) the Flag Day Ceremony. Highlights at Thomas Marks included movies on Saturday afternoons, an annual carnival, and a playday at the end of the year. While in third grade, some TM students even spent one night in school because of a blizzard. The big social event at both schools was the monthly roller skating party. We soon lost our high rank on the totem pole as we entered seventh grade. We met our counterparts from the other elementary school and officially came togther as the Class of 1987. We learned to master our lockers and managed to get to class before the bell (most of the time)! Some of us joined extracurricular activities and junior high sports. We took our first final exams and ended the year at Darien Lake on a field trip sponsored bf the PTA. Eighth gr ade found us just a little bit wiser as we prepared projects for the science fair. We elected freshman class officers and took another trip to Darken Lake. We finally made it to the big-time of high school when we began oar freshman year. Our first major project was the Homecoming float, put together hi Hasifs garage. Although oar creation placed third in the competition, we ranked our first dance as first-rate fun. Our adt i or, Mrs. Sommer, helped us plan our las rative dance which had a punk” theme. We also sold posters to establish our treasury. Some of us became involved in sports and otlser clubs. Use English classes took a fun-filled trip to the movies to watch Romeo andJuliet.” As we emergedfrom the Moving-i p Day Assembly as sophomores, we realized that time sure DOES fly when you're mg TJJP J Our sophomore year got off to a great start when we took first place tn the Homecoming float contest with our hot air balloon built at $ wick’s. We attended many dances and. with the help of Mr. Lussier, sponsored our own dance featuring KISS 98 A. Some of us t •sited BOLES hefo re deciding which major to pursue there, june arrived and we soon realized that our junior year was just a summer away. During that summer, many of us enrolled in Dribkr Education and tried, sometimes an ess ull) In get OUT hi euses. tX II • .farted our junior year with third place for our flout built at launer's and a tie with the senior girls in Pouderpuff. Things got better, however, when our varsity football team won the league and a trip to Rich Stadium. The varsity field hockey team did equally as great when they captured Wilson’s first ever league championship. We next collaborated with the senior class on a production of M A S H. We also demonstrated our theatrical abilities in the Variety Show and the town play. South Pacific. Our hig money-maker was the ale of magazines. We ordered our class rings and were led in a ring-turning ceremony hy Mrs. Mollosky, our advisor. The band traveled to Washington D.( . for competition, am! made us proud by bringing home a silver medal. Spring came and our prom was held at the Red Jacket Inn in Niagara Falls. The softball team left at midnight to travel to Binghamton where they would later become state champs. Our class took a field trip to NCCC to learn more about college life and we decided we liked it (because of the card playing and bowling)! Some of us ushered at Graduation and we all realized that WE were next. M Summer went all too fast and our senior year was soon upon us. We rounded nut our float awards with a fourth place for the float we built who knows where! life Pouderpuff team, coached hy Miss Moore and her dog Molly, were victorious over the juniors. Weshoued what hams we were in the Jr. Sr. play. Lil Abner. The field hockey girl were league champs for the second year in a row. Our last prom was held at the Niagara Royale Hotel, next to the beautiful iVinter Gardens. Some of our class made a trip to Toronto, under the direction of our advisor, Mrs. Stapf. Moving-Up Day and Class Night were soon memories as we realized our remaining days at WCS were few. We attended our baccalaureate!graduation, and All-Night Party as the sun set on our high school careers. However, a new day is dawning for each of us as ufuatch another sun come on the horizon, never forgetting our days at Wilson High. May the sun always shine on the Class of 1987. Kelli Holmes 9
