CREST PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF 1984 WILSON CENTRAL SCHOOL WILSON, NEW YORK 14172 Theme 4 Dedication ' 1? Seniors 14 % FOREWARD The theme song for this 1984 Crest is “Sailing” by Christopher Cross. Through touiWyears, we’ve had “no reason to pretend.” We’ve jiveckon “just a dream” and “fantasy.” We’ve been “all caucAt up in the reverie” and our years have slipped awa;A With our new dreams we now go “sailing” on thrqugh lrfe. IT’S NOT FAR DOWN TO PARADISE AT LEAST IT’S NOT FOR ME AND IF THE WIND IS RIGHT YOU CAN SAIL AWAY AND IF THE WIND IS RIGHT YOU CAN FIND THE JOY OF INNOCENCE AGAIN 5 SAILING TAKES ME AWAY TO WHERE I’VE ALWAYS HEARD IT COULD BE AND SOON I WILL BE FREE '' •+ ! ' FANTASY IT GETS THE BEST OF ME WHEN I’M SAILING ALL Taught up IN THE REVERIE EVERY WORD IS A SYMPHONY WONT YOU BELIEVE IN ME It’s not far back to sanity At least it’s not for me And if the wind is right you can Sail away and find serenity 10 The canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see 11 CHRISTINE MUNCH 12 DEDICATION We the Senior Class are dedicating our yearbook to someone who is often overlooked. She has been our school nurse for the past 17 years. She isn’t someone you can write a long list of activities about, because she doesn’t run clubs or make decisions on how to run the school, but what she does do is important and is often taken for granted. As our school nurse, Mrs. Munch seldom had even a lunch period to herself. Between answering requests from students, handling sports injuries, signing insurance forms, writing transfer papers, organizing health records, and helping with physicals, she is a very busy person. Still, in her hectic schedule, she has always been there to help. She was even willing to coach the 1982 J.V. field hockey team when no other coach was available. Outside of school, her hobbies include cross country skiing and crafts, but she mainly enjoys people in general. Even though the WCS students may have never said so, she is greatly appreciated, a point which wasn’t fully realized until she wasn’t there. So as a token of our appreciation, we wish to dedicate The 1984 Crest to Mrs. Christine Munch. 13 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 16 Row 1: Caryn Grenville - V.P.. Teresa Toenniessen • Treas. A 8-6 league record and a 15-6 overall record gave them the title of NYS Division B Champions. All of the team’s sectional games were played on the road, but that didn’t interfere as they beat Holland 8-2, Silvercreek 6-5, and Falconer 3-1. These victories led them to Frewsburg where the boys won 12-4 for the Class C Champion title. Later, they defeated Forestville 8-3 to gain the Class C-D Championship The Wilson Varsity team then moved on to larger and better things. They travelled to Little Falls for the State Tournament, where they beat Mattituck, Long Island, 4-3 and Rome Catholic 5-2 to become the NYS Division B Champions for small schools. Mark Woodard received the MVP trophy for the season and Mark Curran was awarded the coaches trophy. The Keith Brown award was given to Doug Zipp, and Mark Woodard was awarded MVP for the State Tournament. Selected to the First Team All-League were Mark Woodard, George Cruickshank, and Doug Zipp. Selected to the Second Team All-League were Joe Okoniewski, and Paul Goodman. Much credit must also be given to statisticians Stephanie Neuman and Renee Bateman, as well as managers Kevin Seeley and Mike Bax, for their many hours of hard work and attention to details. This made the team first place at the J.V. level. A total team effort was the key to one of the most successful seasons in the history of the Wilson Central School. Tom Thompson was voted the most valuable player, and Jim Willis received the Coaches’ Trophy. 81 B 0 Y S Row 1: C. Milne, D. Butts. T. Hawkins, J. Teare, R. Williams. D. Kopeck. S. Szustak, S. The All-League team members were John Rees, Scott Dinse, Dave Hoffman and Scott Welch. The victories in the Roy-Hart Relays and the Albion Fresh-Soph Meet show the excellent strength and character of this young team. The coaches are looking forward to working with and developing this team. T R A C GIRLS’ TRACK Row 1: L. Taylor, A. Donner, K. Vogt, C. Schlyer, C. Kean, M. Scheuneman, L. Devole, K. Kujawa Row 2: A. Seasonal best performances by seven of our girls were not enough to match personal bests from the girls on the opposing teams, leaving us in a third place tie with a 9-5 overall league record. Three girls broke and re-broke school records during the year - Jami Cowles (long jump), Pat Koabel (discus), and Jennifer Ziemendorf (100m low hurdles). Jennifer was Wilson’s lone All-League winner, placing first in the 100m low hurdles. Representing Wilson at the State Qualifier Meet were Pat Koabel, who established the discus record of 104' 7 and competed in the shot put; Pam Salvo who holds the 1500m (5:06.8) and 300m (11:03.2) run records and is a member of the record-breaking 3200m relay team (10:15.4); Kathy Vogt (400m low hurdles); Jennifer Hogan (400m dash); and Jennifer Ziemendorf (100m low hurdles). Coach Jufer felt that this team gave him more to appreciate than any other that he had coached. A league championship may have escaped them, but what was gained and never lost was a quality of togetherness and dedication which bears with it no price. Many thanks go out to all the people that helped them throughout the year, and special thanks from the coach go out to the girls on the track and field team. 83 Row 1: T. Douglas, K Woolson, P. Donner, This year’s softball team was very well organized. Our league standing was second place with a record of 11-3. The overall record was 13-4, after the Semi-Final Sectionals. This was the best record ever. The MVP award went to Amy Gerber as pitcher, and the Coaches’ Award went to Caryn Grenville, first basemen. Amy and left fielder Bridget Hacker were named to the all-league team. Bridget was also named to the All Western N.Y. Team. The second Team All-Leaguers were Casey Beatty, Kathi Woolson and Caryn Grenville. Eight of nine starters will be returning for our 1984 season. We are looking forward to a great season. s VARSITY SOFTBALL Row 1: R. Goodman. C. Evans, C. Basil, M. Thompson. Row 2: M. Zastrow, C. Coveil, M. Murphy, G. Grzybowski, M. Wheeler, M. Streeter. L. This was the first time a J.V. softball team had gone undefeated in the Niagara-Orleans League. They were comprised of six eighth graders, and ten tenth graders. Meg Thompson, an eighth grader, was MVP, leading the team in seven offensive categories including a .712 batting average. Gretchen Grzybowsky, a sophomore, was the Coaches' Trophy winner. She has been the team leader in hustle and spirit for the last two years. Others who each had an outstanding year were eighth grade pitcher Molly Streeter who had a 12-0 record, ninth grade pitcher Lori Schultz who was 2-0 with 5 saves, sophomores Rhonda Goodman with a .500 batting average, Carolyn Koepcke with a .471 batting average, Michell Tuttle with a .511 batting average, Karen Walder with a .512 batting average, and Jen Naughton with a .404 batting average. As with all great teams it takes all of the members to contribute and play well and that is exactly what all twenty-one players did this year. J.V. Softball. J.V. SOFTBALL Row 1: L. Wilkins, F. Cervola, P. Barrett, T. Frasier, M. Healy. Row 2: J. McDonald, S. Faucher. TENNIS The Wilson tennis team, after an encouraging 8-6 record in ’82, had high hopes for another winning season in ’83. However, a number of close 3-2 setbacks resulting from a manpower shortage made line-up juggling an everyday occurrence. In spite of having five (5) returning seniors in Hon Baldwin, Pat Barrett, Todd Fraser, Dean Goff, and Kris Platt, the lack of depth and experience finally caught up with the Lakemen, resulting in a disappointing won four, lost ten record. Steve Faucher, a tenth grader who showed promise for the future and was selected MVP. had a winning record while playing at third singles. A pair of eighth graders, John McDonald and Sean Barrett, gained valuable playing experience and are being called on for continued improvement next year. Mike Healy and Frank Cervola, a couple of tenth graders who played a consistent brand of doubles, should continue similar play during the coming season. The outlook for ’84 is for a year of rebuilding. After losing so many seniors to graduation, competition for open slots should be very intense. 86 HOMECOMING 83 POWDERPUFF Seniors 8 Juniors 6 89 Row 1: Mgr. J. Pender, S. Bull, M. Kean, P. VARSITY FOOTBALL The Lakemen started off strong, winning their first 3 games before losing to eventual league champions, Albion, in a very hard fought contest. Numerous key injuries led to a series of 4 straight losses before regrouping and ending the season with a fine performance and a well deserved victory over arch-rival Newfane. All three tricaptains earned post season honors. “All-League” and Niagara Gazette “All Area” honors went to senior defensive end, Tim Ingalsbe. Senior, John Rees was a repeat selection as All League tailback. Junior Quarterback, Scott Perry was named to the Niagara Gazette All-Area team. The team will lose six starters out of the eight graduating seniors. Eleven sophomores saw varsity action and six of the returning juniors were starters, leaving next year’s outlook at an optimistic view. £ 3 Wilson 3 Wilson 21 Wilson 17 Wilson 18 Wilson 6 Wilson 6 Wilson 28 Wilson 25 Wilson 2 Williamsville East 2 Williamsville East 6 Medina 12 Royalton-Hartland Albion Trott Vocational Aki Stai Newfane n mi uoion rott Voce tarpoint 90 Jeff Smith Row 1: W. COMPUTER CLUB CLASS HISTORY We officially became a class when we entered sixth grade in September of ’77 at Stevenson School, but it wasn’t until we reached seventh grade that we began to feel like a class. This was a time of new experiences and challenges. We were the first class to be in the new junior high building as seventh graders. The next year we went from being the youngest in the school to being “sophisticated” eighth graders. We also had our first big project, the science fair. In ninth grade, we started activities as a class, with Mrs. Sommer as our advisor. We captured second in the homecoming float competition. (We also learned to not make the float bigger than the barn it’s stored in . . . just in case it rains.) Our sale was the most successful of any freshman class ever. We finished the year with a picnic at school. (It made us all experts in shaving cream warfare.) In tenth grade Mr. Clark was our advisor. We won second place with our float again. We spent tenth grade on an austerity budget. That meant we had to pay to play a sport and we were limited in extra-curricular activities. Eleventh grade was our third year to place second with our float at homecoming. The Junior Class advisor was Mrs. Mollosky (Mole Woman). In December, we received our class rings. We began the tradition of turning our rings. In the spring, the Varsity Baseball team won the State Championship. The ’82-’83 school year was the first year for our new principal, Mr. Grocki, and the beginning of our “senioritis”. Twelfth grade finally came and we were seniors at last. We again were second with our float (very consistent). The homecoming game was against Starpoint and the dance featured Heartbreaker. The senior year contained many activities. There were sports, yearbook pictures, the Student Council dance, and the Jr.-Sr. Play entitled “Next Year . . . Broadway”, along with many others. Our basketball team was league champs. On May 18th was the prom at the Best Western Inn in Lockport where the theme was “A Night In Heaven.” The year concluded with Moving-Up Day, Class Night, and finally graduation.
