The team produced many fine players, some of which will move on to Varsity competition this year. The tennis team, always strong, remained so last year, finishing high thanks to overall effort and never ending hustle. With nearly half of the team returning, another great season is expected from our tennis team. Row One: R. Hunter, G. Jerla, L. Beczkowskl, D. Sanders, K. Kopp Row Two: Coach Todenhagen. N. Hyjek, T. Team desire and hustle was great throughout the season, and with only two of the top eight runners being lost through graduation, an even better season is insured for next year. Special recognition goes to Bob Goodman and Tim Taylor, both of whom qualified for and ran in the state meet. Goodman and Taylor. Cross Country's fearless twosome. Kneeling: 8. Goodman. D. Cuddeback. They put it all together, ending up 3 wins, 5 losses, and showed everyone what they could really do. Team spirit was never so great, and was evident even during the games we lost. Congratulations to a great team. Dave Smithson was voted the Most Valuable Player, Davy Shuey, Most Improved. Here ref. You carry the ball for awhile. 38 I wish they would get some better Gatorade around here. How come when I put this thing up in the air everyone comes running? JV FOOTBALL The J.V. Lakemen had a typical season. That is, not too good and not too bad. But they hustled and fought hard all year, and they had fun. So their season, despite their record, was a successful one. FRESHMEN FOOTBALL New this year, the Freshmen Football team provided many freshmen players with experience they might not have gotten on a larger J.V. team. Although their record was poor, they showed great spirit, and a desire to do well. With the experience they gained, they will help the J.V. even more next year. Last in Wilson's football family are the Tyro Football teams. Also new this year, they provide young boys with football knowledge for the future. The largest team, at 105 pounds, had a poor season in terms of their record. But hustle was great, as was desire by such young players. We wish them luck next year. TYRO — 105 lbs. 40 TYRO—80 lbs. Our other Tyro team, at 80 pounds also had a poor record for their first season in existence. But like their older brothers, they showed great desire to learn the game. A special thanks should also go to both teams' Cheerleaders, who yelled for victory throughout the season. GOLF The Golf teams performance this year failed to reflect the success they have had in previous seasons, but considering that most of the players were inexperienced, this is understandable. However with most everyone returning, things look good for next year. Mike Waite was M.V.P. 41 Left to Right: M Waite. M Crolsdale. H. Wheeler. D. Ward, D Maacks. G. Jerla. Row One: R. Sieck, E. BASKETBALL Everyone should be proud of this years J.V. Basketball team. They played every game as hard as they could winning most of them. Dave Singer scored a school J.V. record for points in a single game, and the whole team played a fine defensive game throughout the year. FRESHMEN BASKETBALL Mr. Traugott's Freshman Basketball team, although not as productive as last year’s, still showed promise for such young players. The players get a chance to play in games, which they might not have been able to do on the J.V. team. This is another step in the building of a future Varsity champion. Row One: T. Kiely, 0. Wilson fans can look forward to their screams and shouts in the future, with many victories as a hopeful result. 46 Cheer or I'll karate chop you. Now if I can just remember that new cheer. Man, look at that girl in the stands! C'mon Joe. let me fool around with the puck for awhile. Wilson’s Club Hockey team, yet another new addition to the Wilson sports spectrum, had a terrific season for its first year. Leaders in scoring were Tim Taylor, John Barrick and Matt Barmasse. The team, coached by Mr. Ken Taylor, played a tough, aggressive game all year, as every team they played against found out. CLUB HOCKEY KnMlIng: J. W T G. H« «. 0. Gomb.n. H.Sh.m.n, Clan. J Waa. S. WRESTLING This year's Wrestling team, young and for the most part, inexperienced, suffered with a poor record within the league. On top of this, many injuries compounded the problem. Despite all this, however, they showed great pride in themselves, a quality that will make them strong next year. Boy, how lazy can you get? The Wrestling Cheerleaders, under the direction of Miss Freatman, showed how they can cheer when the chips are down. They had great spirit all year, and at most matches they could be heard above the crowd. Row One: D. Wilson, M. Moley, D. Wilson, D. Steblein. Row Two: G. Surniak, M. Tower. Row Three: D. Schuler, L. Man has competed in every form of competition possible, and he probably always will. To the avid fan, nothing is more important and sacred than their sport. However, to others sports can provide a laugh that you can get nowhere else. The pictures on these pages show just some of the humor you can find at an athletic event. 50 Grrrrr!!' That's a heck of a way to build a pyramid. I really don't play golf. I just like these clubs. “No. Randy, you don’t play Tennis on your knee. Me Tarzan. you Jane. Lets have a cheer for John Doe! Who's John Doe? The Jr. High Basketball team, coached by Mr. Schulz, is a team of 7th and 8th grade boys who are getting basketball ex perience on a Jr. High Inter-Scholastic level. Although the J.V.'s had played their game earlier. Wilson’s mighty Varsity pelted the Panthers at the rainy Saturday afternoon game. 70 On Friday, the completion of much hard labor was seen through the streets of our town, in the form of a parade. The Juniors took the prize for the winning float, but everyone deserved a hand for trying. PANTHEMI ING 'IX A special attraction of the Pep Assembly was giving Fighting Fugie” the chance to smack Daring Don Baron” in the face with a cream pie! Another Wilson first. 2:30 Friday — Junior girls vs. Senior girls in a really bruising game of Powder Puff Football. The Seniors were victorious by a two point touchback. After the parade, the huge Varsity Club bonfire lighted the skies of Wilson as students, teachers, and alumni fired up their spirit. Wilson students were taken higher. Higher. HIGHER!!! WHO SAYS, WILSON CENTRAL SCHOOL HAS Students from this school have been involved in assemblies since the beginning of this year, beginning with the FREE FARE CONCERT. Sponsoring this very well-liked rock group was the Sr. High student Council, in connection with the Administration. FREE FARE received such a great response during their day-time concert that they were asked to return the following night, again performing to a full house crowd. This group's message came across clear to the students, as FREE FARE was voted, unanimously, the BEST assembly of the year. For music-lovers of another sort, the Buffalo Philharmonic perform in October. 72 The Age of the Fifties” returns to Wilson in December, 1972. Another feature of the very active Student Council was ••GREASER DAY'’, highlighted by the appearance of “Big Wheely and the Hubcaps”. In order to fully participate in this eventful day, the students were to dress, and act, just as if they stepped out of the Sock Hop and were on their way to the “Malt Shop . As can be seen here, the students weren't afraid. NO Are these students recognizable? EXCITEMENT?” With Mark Neumann and Laureen Tower in charge, Big Wheeley himself croons out the melodies of the 50's as students and teachers listen to the heart-throb songs of their younger days. Besides cheering and introducing the teams at the PEP ASSEMBLY at HOMECOMING this year, an added attraction was presented. As most students can remember, Dave Figura had the “honor of “surprising” Mr. Baron with a cream pie. Of course, it was ALL in fun. For the first time in Wilson history, one certain teacher has organized a certain group of students into a group, practicing and performing music of their own style. This teacher was Mr. John Arthurs, and the students are already well-known. Overcoming some unavoidable difficulties, this group’s first performance in the spring has proven that W.C.S. is alive . . . and moving with the times. Rock and Pep Add Spirit to W.C.S. Activities. WHO says girls can't pump out a MEAN SOUND, too? The 1972-73 PEP BAND has really made an impression on the Wilson students and community this year with their sharp outfits and lively tunes. By selling pizzas and candles, they were able to purchase Blazers, which make them seem more unified. And by “giving all they’ve got” to their playing, everyone enjoys hearing those well-known songs during ball-game half times. Directed by Mr. Jack Maxfield, these students are attempting to put some much needed spirit into our school activities. Treasurer: Shelly Curtiss. 99 SOPHOMORES Sophomores are in the Senior High, finally! Their class is now more organized and projects are more complicated. This year the works involved raising funds through selling bulletin boards was offset with the joy of their roller skating party. The sophomore has more opportunity and, along with this, more responsibility. He begins now to choose classes and gives serious thought to what he wants to be. But he still has two years that will be filled with excitement beyond belief. So he dreams of those days to come. Maybe it I stare at it long enough it'll turn into a pumpkin! These officers have put forth great effort and hard work. Their guidance and hard work have created great enthusiasm and initiative among class members. 105 JUNIORS The Juniors have grown together for many years. They are a class of friends who have slowly broken out of their shells and emerged seeking new ideas and knowledge. Their year was full of fun and hard work. They were involved in the magazine sales, Junior-Senior prom, Junior play and class rings! At this time all juniors prepare seriously for their futures and try to fulfill the responsibility to themselves—to be the best they possibly can. But as the year closes the realization that they'll be seniors and the thought of graduation pops into their minds—what will it be like? Bottled love potion. We ll sell a million!! Jim Luff—President Paula Zahno—Secretary 136 Judy Rohring—Treasurer CLASS ADVISORS Seated: Mrs. Mosher. Mr. Proefrock. Standing: Mrs. Strick, Mr. Pender. Mr. LaRock. Not Pictured: Mr. Geise We, the Class of 1973, express our most sincere thanks to our advisors for their guidance and cooperation in making our senior year at Wilson rewarding and memorable. 137 The girl whom we were privileged to have as our female foreign exchange student was Guenet Wolde Selassie from Ethopia. While visiting us here at Wilson, she stayed with the family of a former Wilson graduate, Marvin Hill. Guenet enjoyed the courses she took which included shorthand, typing, business math, and American History. Guenet extends an invitation to us all to visit her country. OUR FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Our second foreign exchange student was Othon Alvarez from Mexico. Othon was only with us for a half a year. He left for home in December. While Othon was here, he stayed with the Hill family and the Munnikhuysen’s. Othon has already graduated from his high school in Mexico. His plans for the future are attending college to become a veterinarian. After he receives his degree, Othon asks us all to bring our sick pets to him. 138 CLASS HISTORY Kindergarten—This was the big step in our life we all looked forward to. The finger painting, nap time, and waiting to see who was going to break their milk bottles during milk and cookie time!” First Grade—We learned to read of the adventures of Sally and Spot, learned that A was for apple, B for boy, C for cat. We had a rough time remembering to start writing at the left of the paper, and which way the d's”, b's , and r's turned. Second Grade—We ll never forget our first Chauvinist play Three Billy Goats Gruff with an all male cast, and Dana became our first engaged woman. Third Grade—The big thrill of the year—taking the test to find out if we were musically inclined! Some of us went to Buffalo Airport and hijacked a plane back to Ransomville. During our play, Bruce fainted and fell through our “wall. But the show still went on. Fourth Grade—Our show and tell time became a lesson in itself. We learned not to use—my sister she or my brother he. Fifth Grade—Our first taste of team teaching came this year, switching classes like the high school was great fun but some of us just couldn't remember to take along all the books and supplies we needed for the different classes. Both schools were busy publishing a newspaper. Sixth Grade—Wilson students did their plays about the first Thanksgiving and Hansel and Gretel. It was also the year of our first bloody movie, Hemo the Magnificent. Trud fainted. We got to visit the high school for orientation (Sheila missed the bus) and were able to be present at the Moving Up Day ceremonies. This was the last year of being the big kids, now we were to start all over being the little seventh graders! Seventh Grade—We began to organize our first mixed gangs”, Wilson and Ransomville kids together. We elected our first representatives to Jr. High Student Council. Eighth Grade—Who could forget our first Jr. High Party and rolling eggs across the gym floor with our noses? This year Jim and Trud were both nominated for the Jr. High Student Council presidency but neither one wanted it. Ninth Grade—Our first class officers, our first pizza sale (delivering pizzas at 10:00 at night in the rain), and our first picnic on school grounds complete with water balloons thrown through the halls! Tenth Grade—The year of the frog, the eel, and the grasshopper and the smell of formaldehyde throughout the halls. We ended the year with our picnic at Akron Park. Remember the 'ole rolling wine bottle? Eleventh Grade— The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” brought down the ceiling of the auditorium. Again our picnic was at Akron Park and nobody leaves our picnic dry—including Mrs. Stapf. But don't forget our “winning” float and caged eagles in LUFF'S garage. Twelfth Grade—It seemed like a dream that we were finally Seniors and some of the kids were really working hard for our passes and our lounge. Right from the start we anticipated this end, our last magazine sale, last dance, and last chance to goof off before the final days of class night and graduation. We now anticipate all going our separate ways and repeating “Those were the days.” SENIOR ACHIEVEMENTS Douglas Alexander — Maple Rd., Wilson. Debbie Anson — 4403 East Lake Rd.. He has helped us to formulate our goals as Seniors and, above all, Mr. LaRock has encouraged us to be ourselves and to do what we feel is right. We feel this Is one of the most Important aspects of becoming responsible citizens. We extend to you, Mr. LaRock our slncerest Thanks for your dedication to us and all our class activities. The Class of 1973 147 I’m no prophet, don’t know nature’s ways.
