The 1961 Crest Presented by the Senior Class of Wilson Central School Wilson, New York TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION___________________________ 5 SENIORS ________________________________ 13 CLASSES_________________________________ 31 ACTIVITIES______________________________ 63 MUSIC__________________________________ 73 SPORTS __________________________________79 RANSOMVILLE______________________________87 FOREWORD As our adult years rapidly approach us, we, the class of 1961, begin to look upon youth as a period in our lives which, though brief, is to be forever cherished. It is with this spirit, so well exemplified in the writings of Mark Twain, that we present this 1961 Crest to you — DEDICATION RUSSELL J. HURLBURT is a native son of Wilson. He graduated from Wilson High School with the class of 1922. Mr. Hurlburt attended Michigan State University following his graduation from Wilson. Mr. Hurlburt became a member of the Board of Education of Wilson Central School on July 1, 1943, three years after the district was centralized, and served continuously until July 1, 1959. Following the retirement of the late Thomas Marks he became President of the Board of Education, in which position he served until he retired. Mr. Hurlburt's contributions to education in Wilson were many, but perhaps the greatest was his interest in developing the buildings and facilities, and during the years he spent on the Board of Education he worked on increasing our facilities on five different occasions: 1946 — Additional classrooms. 1952 — Cafeteria. 1954 — Gymnasium and classroom wing. 1957 — Building the Thomas Marks Elementary School 1958 — Building the Vocational and Industrial Arts Building. Another great interest of Mr. Hurlburt's is athletics. His special love is for baseball, and he played professional ball in the mid-west before returning to Wilson. In this connection he promoted the all around development of students — scholastically as well as in terms of sportsmanship — during his service with the Wilson Board of Education. RUSSELL J. HURLBURT EARL W. BRYDGES is a graduate of Niagara University and the University of Buffalo Law School. He has been representing the 53rd district in the New York State Senate since 1948. Senator Brydges became a member of the Board of Education of Wilson Central School on July 1, 1943, and served continuously until July 1, 1960. For most of this period he has been Vice-President of the Board of Education. Senator Brydges has been chairman of the education committee of the New York State Senate for many years, and in this capacity he has not only been interested in the highest possible educational opportunities for students here in Wilson, but for students of the entire state as well. It has been largely through the determined and untiring efforts of Mr. Brydges that suitable legislation has been passed in New York State to uprate the quality and character of education for the mentally and physically handicapped children. EARL W. BRYDGES Serving the educational needs of our community is service of the highest order, and in dedicating the 1961 Crest to these two fine men the class of 1961 is confident that the community of Wilson joins it in this expression of gratitude for their efforts in our behalf. 3 Mr. Wirt Wakeman Mr. Burt Jennings President Mr. Harry Stevenson BOARD OF EDUCATION Today your opportunities for education and training are greater than ever before. It is important to think about the use which you are going to make of these opportunities. Your success and happiness will depend largely upon yourself and your attitude. I said I didn't know ' Mark Twain Life on the Mississippi The first mark of the educated man is to admit he doesn't know. But that in itself is not enough; the educated man is the man who finds the answers. And that is all that an education amounts to — getting the answers. Here we learned to tie our shoes and sing The Eensy, Weensy Spider. FIRST GRADE — This year we took a trip to Mrs. Hamblin's chicken farm and we brought some chickens back which we watched grow. We also made cookbooks for our mothers. SECOND GRADE — We put on Tommy Tinker, and we studied about Indians and Dutch people. THIRD GRADE — We learned our multiplication tables. FOURTH GRADE — This year we attended classes in the Methodist Church. We made puppets and had a puppet show. Also we learned how to play the Flute-O-Phone. FIFTH GRADE — We entered our first fire prevention poster contest. Some of us got to ride on the fire truck. It was a big thrill! Also we collected money to buy trees which we planted in back of school. SIXTH GRADE — We all went to the Shrine Circus at Buffalo. We also had money making projects for the Junior Red Cross. We wrote original poetry for the first time. SEVENTH GRADE — We had our math and science classes in the old school. Some of us attended county chorus and band. EIGHTH GRADE — We took life adjustment from Mr. Krahl. This was the first year we decorated homerooms for Christmas and our Homeroom won third prize. We also visited Buffalo Zoo. NINTH GRADE — Freshmen . . . For the first time we had the experience of voting for class officers. We could finally try out for J.V. Sports and Cheerleading. For the first time a Freshmen class was allowed to have a dance. We presented scenes from the King and I. TENTH GRADE — Sophomores . . . This year we di-sected frogs in Biology class. We had a class picnic at the end of the year. Our Biology club went to Roswell Park Memorial Hospital in Buffalo. ELEVENTH GRADE — Juniors . . . This was a very exciting year for us because we received our class rings. We presented the Play The Eyes of Tlaloc . It was the most successful presented here in many years. We had a Junior-Senior Prom and a Junior-Senior picnic at Mirror Lake. TWELFTH YEAR — Seniors at last .... We presented our Senior play Dino. Our history classes put on a Civil War Program to Commemorate the one hun-dreth anniversary of the Civil War. Many of us were busy sending applications to colleges. ACTIVITIES 'Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen.1 Mark Twain SENIOR HONOR SOCIETY The Senior Honor Society was formed to recognize those students who are outstanding in scholarship and participate in activities. To be eligible, the student must acquire a bronze W , which requires 125 honor points. For higher standing, 150 points will bring a silver W and 200 points, a gold W and the right to attend all future social functions without charge. These honor points are given out under three headings: scholastic, social, and athletic. The Honor Societies are an outgrowth of the Student Council, and last year an Honor Society Banquet was financed by the Council. JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY The Junior Honor Society requires an accumulation of 50 honor points during the seventh and eighth grades. Members receive felt W's . Points are collected just as for the Senior Honor Society and the members of the Junior Honor Society attend the annual Honor Society Banquet. 64 CREST EDITORS Seated, Left to Right: Mr. Baron, Advisor; Janet Nichols, Classes Editor; Pat Brooks, Editor-in-Chief; Mr. Kent, Advisor; M. M. Welker, Faculty Editor. Standing: Beth Truesdell, Activities Editor; Carole Schnoor, Photography Editor; Ralph Smith, Sports Editor; Donna Schnoor, Art Editor; Jaska Davis, Seniors Editor; Kathleen Jones, Typing Editor. CREST STAFF The Crest editors and staff wish to express appreciation to their advisors, Mr. Berne Kent and Mr. Donald Baron for their unfailing guidance in the creation and production of this yearbook. 65 SENIOR STUDENT COUNCIL The Senior High Student Council, functioning under a new constitution, was ready to operate when school opened in September. The officers and members had been elected in the previous spring. Jon Knorr was elected President; Russ Fitch, Vice-President; Mary Margaret Welker, Secretary; and Cheryl Stevenson, Treasurer. Among its activities, the Council has sponsored Dress-Up Day, prepared a student handbook, assisted in the planning of assemblies, and raised funds for the annual Honor Society Banquet. Money to support these activities has been raised through dances and the sale of pom-poms and sweatshirts. JUNIOR STUDENT COUNCIL In its first year of operation the Junior High Student Council has made great progress in extending a greater degree of self-government to the Junior High School. One of the major accomplishments has been the maintenance of a Lost and Found Department through the year. The most exciting activity of the Council was the televising of the campaign speeches over a closed circuit television system. 66 This year the officers of the Junior Red Cross were: President, Mike Kress; Vice-President, Sally Kopp; and Secretary-Treasurer, Martha Morton. The program this year continued with work for the Veteran's Hospital in Buffalo and also in making a disaster chest, filled with necessities by the students, to be used in a disaster area. Last year's chest went to Puerto Rico. The club also collected $173. 00 in the Enrollment Drive. The club is advised by Mrs. Sporleder. The Library Council act as valuable assistants and ambassadors of good will throughout the school. They help others to make use of library services, its book collection and to use books for pleasure and information. Last fall the council sponsored a successful paperback book sale. JR. RED CROSS LIBRARY COUNCIL 67 The Art Club, advised by Mr. Kent, was formed to further develop student interest in art. This year's officers were: Donna Schnoor, President; Janet Mi-chols. Secretary; and Beth Truesdell, Treasurer. The club plans to take a sketching trip along the Niagara River. The Secretarial Club is advised by Mrs. Malin. The officers for this year are: President, Linda Drewes; Vice-President, Suzanne Nye; Corresponding Secretary, Rosemarfe Stanton; Recording Secretary, Marianne Balluzzo; and Treasurer, Sharon Schultz. The club provides opportunities for the students majoring in business subjects to meet together and talk over common problems and ideas. It helps prepare the members for situations they will face in the business world. This group, consisting of five boys from each class has been organized by Mr. Thompson. It is their purpose to help in every way to make our fire drills run more smoothly and efficiently so that we may be better prepared for emergency. The student body is indeed appreciative of this protection. 68 ART CLUB MAKE UP CLUB One of Wilson Central's real service clubs is the Make-Up Club, which was organized by Mrs. Marjorie C. Hurlburt, a few years ago. Interested students are trained in the art of theater make-up. This group is very vital to a good stage production and enjoys making its contribution to the school's dramatic events. The P.A. Staff starts the school off on the right foot each morning and sends it home well informed each afternoon. This volunteer group of students performs a valuable service to Wilson Central with sincerity and interest. In addition to the services rendered, the members enjoy the opportunity of learning some of the intricacies of broadcasting. The chess club is advised by Mr. Cable. The officers for this year are: President, Marjorie Wilcox; Vice-President, George Brooks, and Secretary-Treasurer, Rodney Toenniessen. The club has had several chess meets with their fellow club members, and at the end of the year there will be a school champion. Some of the members are planning to go to another school for a tournament. The chess club is earning money to buy chess sets for future chess clubs. FRENCH CLUB The French Club is a voluntary organization whose primary objective is to enrich students' knowledge of the people of France, their language, customs and culture. It has had the privilege of hearing great speakers, of using various audiovisual aids and has even prepared French menus. The club is advised by Mrs. Sweet and the officers for this year are: Pat McAvoy, President; John Goldthorp, Vice-President; Pat Gabbey, Secretary, and Tom Beukema, Treasurer. LATIN CLUB The Latin Club is advised by Mrs. Singer. The officers are: President, Meg Weiler; Vice-President, Mary O'Connor; Secretary, Karen Gnage; and Treasurer, Beatrice Betts. This year the Latin Club members have participated in a revised Roman election, met several of the honored Roman deities, and visited Europe through Mrs. Singer's wonderful slides. In the spring they had a Roman banquet where they dressed in Roman togas, as shown here. 70 BIOLOGY CLUB The Biology Club, under the direction of Mr. Cable, is a very active club in the school. The officers this year are: President, David Gnage; Vice-President, Jack Evans; Secretary, Karen Lederhouse; and Treasurer, John Goldthorpe. The purpose of the Biology Club is to further develop the students interest in biology. The club has sponsored a movie, and took a field trip this spring. Under the guidance of Mr. Hanley, this years' Inklings Staff has produced our own school newspaper. The Editor-in-Chief is Helen Wilson; Treasurer, Jon Knorr, and Secretary, Mary O'Connor. The members have been busy gathering all the latest news and have kept the Wilson students well informed. INKLINGS 71 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA With the help of their advisor, Mrs. Donovan, the members of the F.H.A. have carried out their primary objectives; to emphasize the importance of worthy home membership, encourage democracy in the home and community and to work for good home and family life for all. Donna Wade was President; Cecilia Campbell, Vice-President; Kathy Jones, Secretary and Sylvia Thomas, Treasurer. FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB This year the Future Teacher's Club under the direction of Mrs. Burton has been very active. Officers for this year were: Sandy Fitch, President; Becky Baehr, Vice-President; and Pat Brooks, Secretary-Treasurer. One of the many activities of the club was a field trip to a state teacher's college. The club will sponsor a $25 scholarship to be given to an outstanding senior boy or girl who plans to take up teaching as a profession. PROJECTION CLUB The Projection Club has enjoyed a busy and useful year maintaining and operating audio-visual equipment in the school and community. In October the club members operated a closed circuit television system for two weeks. The year was climaxed by a trip to the Wilson Theater where the club members observed the operation of the professional movie equipment. MUSIC Mark Twain ■ Under the very capable direction of Mr. Maxfield, the band is becoming a more active part of student life and activities. Besides its annual concert, the band plays for many outside activities. A brass choir played for the Christmas program. Last year the band received A B rating in Grade VI music at the NYSSMA Festival at Amherst. The band was represented at the section All-State, and at the Niagara County Festival. Judy Ruth Petty took part in the All-Eastern Band in Washington, D. C. SENIOR CHORUS SENIOR CHORUS The Senior Mixed Chorus is trained by Mrs. Marjorie C. Hurlburt and is the only select chorus in school. This year the chorus has shown considerable growth and sang at a Christmas program, an annual Spring Vocal Concert and at Commencement. Members of the chorus represent Wilson Central at Senior County Festival, the All-State Chorus, the NYSSMA and this year Hannah Jane Hurlburt participated in the Eastern Division Chorus at Washington, D. C. At Christmas time a tradition was born for by popular request the chorus repeated a candle-lighted processional march, that they had introduced in 1959. 77 FRESHMAN CHORUS This small group of girls form the remainder of a Girl's Chorus that was begun in 1959. The ensemble gives the girls who could not sing with the Senior Chorus a chance to keep in rehearsal until such time as their turn should come. The Freshman Chorus studies the fundamentals of voice production. It is not selective and is quite active. The Chorus sings in the Christmas program and in the Spring Concert. The Junior High members of the Niagara County Festival Chorus are supplied by this group. 78 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Left to Right: S. Kopp, V. Morshamn, K. Bulmor, M. Balluzzo, A. Galbraith, L. Drewes, C. Campbell, S. Fitch, B. Hazen, S. Schultz. This year's cheerleading squads, under the able direction of Mrs. Sweet, sparkled with spirit and enthusiasm. These attractive girls showed good sport- manship and good conduct at all times, and they not only made the faculty proud, but the student body as well. JAYVEE CHEERLEADERS Left to Right: R. Barnum, P. Schrader, J. Jeffery, D. Lort, G. Bursik, V. Bauer, J. Henschel, S. Tansey, C. Stevenson. 80 Row One: P. Julius, S. Phillips, G. Saunderson, T. Upton, D. Newmann, C. Kreutz, Coaches: L. Gnage, J. Fitch, L. Heidenfeldt, T. O'Connor, R. Sherrill, A. Evan. Because of the great number of inexperienced ball players, our football season was not the one we had expected. With the experience the younger boys are receiving this year we are hoping for better results next year. 81 82 First Row, Left to Right: W. Barnum, G. Schearer, L. Motchenbaugh, W. Brydges. Second Row: A. Schmidt, T. Seyler, J. Knorr, R. VanHousen, R. Smith. This year's Cross Country team had a fairly successful season, although Lewiston-Porter won the county meet, which was held here at Wilson. George Schearer placed first among sixty runners. He also placed first in the State Sectionals. First Row, Left to Right: D. Zabel, M. Witkop, G. Moot, S. Moot, J. Dean, R. VanHousen, W. Barrows. Rear-Center: Mr. Cable, Coach. This was the first year that Wilson had a Tennis Team. Under the direction of Mr. Cable the boys finished second only to Lew-Port and won their class A division. Better results are expected next year with all of the members returning. VARSITY BASKETBALL Left to Right: W. Brydges, A. Frerichs, S. Moot, R. Von Housen, A. Schmidt, C. Hogemon, C. Horton, J. Knorr, N. Neuman, G. Saunderson, R. Toenniessen. Wilson can be truly proud of the 1960-1961 basketball teams. The varsity team set a vigorous pace in the Niagara-Orleans League, and made a fine bid for the Class A sectionals. The junior varsity team demonstrated that good sports need not taste victory all the time, and revealed fine potential for next year's varsity team. Row One: L. Tremblay, Manager; K. MacArthur, G. Perry, M. White, S. Phillips, A. Waite, Manager. Row Two: T. Stringer, L. Brawn, L. Ridley, K. Doebler, R. Moss, R. Tillotson, W. Moxham, P. Schumacher, W. Ferrington. JAYVEE BASKETBALL 83 Wilson has always had a successful track team and one we could be proud of, and this year's team was no exception. Adrian Frerichs highlighted the season with his record breaking heaves in both the shot and discus. Row One: P. Pettit, J. Swick, D. Call, J. Kress, T. Brydges, L. Lort, A. Frerichs, G. Schearer. Schendel, Manager, R. Pease, G. Saunderson, D. Newmann, M. Kress. E. Thomas, R. Moss, Manager, T. Upton. Due to the lack of depth and experience, Wilson's baseball team did not have the good season they had hoped for. All but one player from last year's team will be playing this year and better results are expected. The highlight of this season was the hard-earned victory over our arch-rival Newfane, in a closely contested game. COACHING STAFF Left to Right: R. Chamberlain, J. Cable, W. Hutchison, L. Brinnen. MR. HUTCHINSON Hutch'' is truly the example of athletic ability and diversity all students aspire to. In his long career as head coach of Wilson's athletic program, Hutch has coached many a successful track, cross country and basketball team to victory. MR. CHAMBERLAIN During the two short years that Coach Chamber-lain has been with us he has instilled in our football team a spirit and a desire to win which is unmatched in the area. Through his influence the boys have all grown in self-confidence and character. MR. CABLE Mr. Cable initiated a tennis program in 1959. Through his skill and patience, Wilson has been able to send a team to the sectionals, that we can be proud of. MR. BRINNEN Lowell Brinnen came to Wilson High to coach the 1958 football season. He left for one year to fulfill his military obligation. We were glad to hear that he would be able to coach football in 1960. Mr. Brinnen has played an improtant part in Wilson's athletic functions, and we are confident that he will do so in the future. VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is made up of boys and girls who have received a letter in cheerleading or in a specific sport. Also, all the girls who get a high score on their Wave Qualification Test are eligible for V-Club membership. RANSOMVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Nurse, MRS. DORTHY GRIFFIN; Music Teacher, MRS.
