THE SENIOR CLASS of WILSON CENTRAL SCHOOL Wilson, New York PRESENTS------ 1957 CREST CO NTENTS ADMINISTRATION 4 SENIORS . . _ 12 CLASSES . ___ 30 ACTIVITIES _ _ . _ 52 SPORTS 66 RANSOMVILLE 75 2 M. G. HOFFMAN The death of Miss M. Gazelle Hoffman, Superintendent of Schools in School District number 3, was a blow to education in Niagara County that will long be felt. A staunch advocate of school centralization she helped consolidate the schools under her jurisdiction into three centralized systems. She became an authority on school law, and served, at one time, as President of the New York State Association of School Superintendents. Miss Hoffman was esteemed and respected by her colleagues and even though death has ended her work the centralized schools of this area stand as a memento of her achievements. MISS M. GAZELLE HOFFMAN MR. MARKS With the death of Mr. Thomas E. Marks during the school year we lost a good friend of education and a tireless worker on its behalf. - His twenty-three years on the Board of Education spanned a period which saw scattered one-room school houses in the district develop to the modern functional central school we have today. He was ever ready to give his time and effort to any cause which would improve educational opportunities for boys' and girls in rural areas. An active member of church, farm, and community organizations, his loss has been felt deeply in those areas as well as in the field of education. MR. THOMAS MARKS 3 MR. RUSSELL HURLBURT President BOARD OF EDUCATION I believe that education is understanding and understanding is useful, whatever your aim in life. R.H. MR. HARRY STEVENSON MR. WIRT WAKEMAN MR. JAMES C. CORNELL Clerk ADMINISTRATION A very wise man once said, the man who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow, is uneducated the day after. Education must be a continuing process in a world that is moving so fast that what is considered a proven truth today may become the falsehood of tomorrow. Never has youth been in a better position to continue learning after the completion of his formal education. Press, radio and television vie with each other to bring us complete coverage of world events as quickly as they happen and in a form we can understand them. Millions of dollars are being spent by industry, private endowments and state and local governments to subsidize the cost of education through scholarships, grants and student loan funds. Almost every industry sponsors courses for the up-grading of their employees. Even the armed forces recognize the value of a continuing education by offering opportunities to thousands of service men through courses in specialized training schools. The man who finds himself uneducated tomorrow may well ask himself if he has failed to stop, look and listen, or maybe just didn't care. L.E.T. MR. L. ERNEST TARR Principal MR. CLAYTON D. RUSSELL MAYS Russell was a member of our class for nearly three of our High School years. His pleasant personality and ready smile were felt and loved by all who knew him. He took an active part in Sr. Choir and all other class functions. These wonderful traits are sorely missed by Russell's classmates but Russell himself is missed most of all. IN MEMORIAM NOEL SCHULTZ The tragic death of Noel Schultz was a shock both because of its suddenness and because he was so well-liked by his classmates. His love for the outdoors was evident in his great interest in hunting, fishing, and trapping. In both the village and school libraries are books on these outdoor activities donated in memory of Noel. His classmates remember him as a friendly boy with a ready smile, always willing to do his part in class activities. His death left a void in his class that never has been filled. Row Three: L. GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY The unsung heroes of Wilson Central are the janitors. Their job of keeping the building clean and running smoothly never ends. Even though they are always busy at their regular tasks, they never refuse to help a class prepare the gymnasium for a pep rally or to move the piano from the music room on to the stage. Everyone appreciates the enthusiasm and willingness with which our janitors perform their duties. CUSTODIANS Mr. Lowe has been directing traffic in front of the school for 7 years. It is doubtful that there is a single student who does not know him and think of him as a friend. No matter what the weather may be, Mr. Lowe is always there doing his job well. He is highly respected by all for his fairness in dealing with both driver and pedestrian. TRAFFIC POLICEMAN 74 RANSOMVILLE MRS. LYDIA SOUTHARD Principal RANSOMVILLE SCHOOL The new wing now being added to the Ransomville building underlines the story of the steady growth of that school. In 1939 the original building was constructed with four rooms and a combination gymnasium and auditorium. It housed grades 1 through 8 with 75 pupils and four teachers. By 1953, the number of students had doubled and were taught art, music and physical education in addition to their regular studies. To provide for the increasing number of students, a right wing of three classrooms was added in 1954 The year 1954 also marked the centralization of the Ransomville School with the Wilson Central School District. Hence there, the 7 and 8 grades have been moved to the Wilson building allowing separate classes for the remaining grades. In 1955 with an enrollment of 235 there was need for still more classrooms. The present left wing under construction, will provide three additional classrooms and a badly needed kitchen. It will be ready for occupancy in September 1957 when a registration of 315 is expected. 75 MRS. FRANCES HORNING Kindergarten MRS. MARJORIE JOHNSON Grade 5 MRS.
