CARRIE MARTIN A deep understanding of human nature,--an invin cible determination,--a spark of ready wit,--and a chuckle when you least expect it,--these are the win- ning characteristics of Mrs. Carrie Martin, teacher, friend and companion. For thirty-seven years her love of people, sound judgment, and sincerity were felt by the students and faculty alike, in the commun- ity of Wilson. It is with the deepest pride and admiration that we dedicate the 1947 Crest to Mrs. Carrie Martin. She will never be replaced in the memories of those who have had the honor and privilege of knowing her. 3 UEHHBUUH STHFF Editor-in- chief . . . Assistant Editor . . Art Editor ...... The teacher seemed to notice it And pointed out to us She'd taught some pretty stupid ones But we were stupid plus. But we struggled through that Freshman year And now we had attained The thrill of being sophomores But still the juniors reigned. We overcame that little thing In the passing of that year And now that we were juniors Our better days were here Those days went all too quickly And just like overnight We donned the role of seniors Graduation was in sight. Our senior play made success Our concerts, and each game Spurred Wilson on to better things And the seniors on to fame. Yes, we've had fun and hardships And we will miss it all But we are getting older, and A supple future calls. But, before we yield to future's calls We'd like to say goodbye As we depart from the silenced halls Of 'dear old central high. It's this time of graduation And excitement of that day That brings thoughts of parting classmates As we each go on our way. So we thank you Mrs. Singer And Sergeant Richardson For the patient helpful guidance And the good work that You've done. We'll cherish every friendship With each girl and every boy We'll treasure every memory Of our school days filled with joy. We'll hold in very high esteem The colors, silver, soft and clear And maroon, it's bright companion For this forty-seven year. Our motto: Ever onward - The World As Our Teacher Will stay in our heart as a silent pledge And rule our life's procedure. Half of our heavy task is done We speak but a word of sorrow As we say farewell to Wilson High And turn to meet tomorrow. E. Main 12 HERBERT ALLGIER K I rbi ! Iudy Gale, Barbara LaVan, Franklin Campbell, Duane Truesdell, Gene Bradley, Mary Ann Estoney, Loretta Tower, Mary Eileen Flynn, Gloria Foster, and David Blemaster were given the nod for the questionable honor of dashing home for a hasty gulp, only to scurry back to re- hearsals, almost nightly for the next two months. The selections proved fortunate. After nearly eight weeks, during which time Mr. Lee and Mr. Richardson, our two harassed directors, brow-beat the cast through countless hours of grinding rehearsals, the play was generally conceeded to have been the most suc- cessful venture of its type seen in Wilson for many years. The cast unanimously agreed that the hours of- effort, relieved only by Mary Eileen's cullinary accomplishments enjoyed at post-rehearsal parties in the Home Economics Room, were well worth all the grief and anguish that they cost. Highlights of the performance that brought reverberating laughter and applause from two appreciative audiences included Dana's masquerade as a hula dancer, the wrestling prowess of Gene Bradley as she manfully tossed the rest of the cast about like ten-pins, Franklin's carefully admonished strokes to the posterior of Mary Ann's anatomy, Prof's walrus-like roaring at all and sundry before he was properly chastened by the combined efforts of the rest of the class, and, perhaps most hilarious of all, the return to life of flour-besmirched Judy and Barbara after the lugubriously funereal atmosphere of the death scene. 18 L CLHSS HISTUREI Twelve years ago the present senior class marched into the old school to learn the A, B, C's and elementary principles of mathematics. The greatest event of the first grade, outside of Prof learn- ing to tie his shoe laces, was moving into the new school. The ceremony was climaxed by the proces sion of the grades, beginning with the first, led by Roger Moore, flag bearer. It took quite some time to acquaint ourselves with the wonders of the big first grade room and of the seemingly gigantic new building. The teacher who withstood the ordeal and passed most of us to second grade was Miss Fleace Campbell. The achievement of entering second grade was one of our greatest victories, for we saw the ful- fillment of one of our most ardent desires, to have swinging cloak room doors. Two of the most not- able happenings of that year were M. A. E s entra.nce and exit and the softball game that John and David still remember. During our second year of formal education we were privileged to be under the guidance of Miss Hamblin. Third grade angels, so the saying goes, but not in actual life, as our good teacher, Mrs. Birch, bitterly discovered. By the time we reached the fourth grade we really began to feel groum up. A course in Australian geography, ably taught by Miss Evans, may have been responsible., Whatever it was, it became relatively insignificant with the advent of Mrs. McMurray's written assignments in fifth grade. Two outstanding events of that year were the re-entrance of M. A. E. and the passing of Merle Evans. The latter temporarily dampened our spirits, for Merle was loved by all. Promotion to sixth grade brought the honor of being the oldest students at those great assemblies, but it also brought longer assignments and more advanced studies. However, in Miss Coomb's able hands we came through. Junior High at last, and the first in the new centralized school. The nearly doubled enrollment gave us many new classmates. junior High did have some disadvantages, however, notably Regents' examinations. But under the instruction of capable Mrs. Dikeman most of us did well and were ready for Mrs. Canfield, who guided us in our last year of elementary schooling. In 1943 we proudly proclaimed ourselves freshmen. Our homeroom teacher was Mrs. Gray, who kept us well in hand. In our sophomore year, Mrs. Ness and Mrs. Singer were our homeroom teach- ers. A rummage sale was the main project of this year. Since we were unable to undertake many activities, we awaited our junior year with anticipation. In our junior year we piously elected the following class officers: president, Franklin Campbell, vice president, Loretta Tower, secretary, Mildred Bradleyg and treasurer, Gloria Foster. We were most capably guided by Mrs. Singer and Mr. Rawley Lynch, our class advisors. As juniors we spon- sored a highly successful Halloween dance. The Spring Ball, given by the juniors and seniors, con- cluded our activities for the year. And now the final and probably most cherished chapter in the history. What a joyous and eventful senior year it has been, and what a storehouse for memories. The concert series which we spon- sored was a huge success, financially as well as from the entertainment standpoint. The magazine subscription campaign in which we collaborated with the juniors brought profit to both classes. And ACT YOUR AGE, the class play, was a fitting climax to the activities of the first semester. Dur- ing the Easter vacation the class spent four days in New York City, sightseeing and generally having a good time. With Iune came graduation and the end of our high school career, but everyone agrees that we enjoyed twelve wonderful years together. Before closing, we wish to thank our advisors, Mrs. Singer and Mr. Richardson, for the splendid job they did. For it was under their guidance that we emerged successful in all our projects. 19 CLHSS Ullll We, the Senior Class of Wilson Central School, being indisputably of sound and disposing mind and memory and about to depart from this grand institution of learning, do make, declare and publish the ensuing instrument, consisting of page, as our last will and testament, hereby revoking any and all former wills by us at any time heretofore made. Ed. To write this prophecy I dread. As I gaze into the future, who do I see Running for the presidency, Our Soupie, fair and bold and gay, And beside him the former Miss Shay. The lady dark and full of grace, Who is trying to better the human race, Is Judy Gale, you may have guessed, Who lights the lamps of those depressed. Her face is kindly and wise, At her nod her pupils arise, She wields a rod of iron I'm told, ' Our fair Fuzzy Foster of old. Her head in the clouds of nature and defianc She buries herself deep in her science, She has no thoughts of gaiety or sin, This dark, beauteous, Mary Eileen Flynn. By her side in the laboratory bright, Smashing the atoms to the left and right, Stands Daner, a might muscled Titian, And Pecky right in there fightin'. The hen before the egg, the egg before the h Is a problem that always perplexed men, But Richard Rogers, through great study, Has solved this problem for everybody. And Cyn though full of grace and poise, Still seems to make a lot of noise, Her soul is that of a true Lauer, As she tends each precious little flower. Say, there is Prof in a swivel chair, With patients scattered everywhere, A famous surgeon now, his life complete, He says his assistant sure is sweet Jerry Bale, our corny wit, Has really scored a hit, He wrote a book of gags last year, Now his life is just a drear, We all remember Beverly B3 Interior Dec is her specialty. Ensconced in fashionable style now, She charges plenty for her know how. Bevs part time helper you'll recall, Is Marilyn Kayner, right on the ball The first of our class to get maritally tangled To her this stuff is nothing new-fangled. 21 On the Randall Road there used to dwell, A girl whom we all knew well, Barbara has now learned to paint, And to make the ugliest look like a saint. In the world of art there is, A pal who's become quite a whiz, Mary Ann is this ladies name, Wearing on her brow, a wreath of fame. Waves and curls were Helen's goal, But Cupid has taken another toll, At dishes and babies shes having a try, Cause Bill changed Urtel to Bye. Who is it, about whom the girls did rave, T'was none other than our handsome Dave, And he still makes feminine hearts flutter, While dishing out groceries and butter. Man can propose, but God can dispose And that's what happened to our dear Rose, A typist she aspired to be, - But Ray has changed her aims, we see. With pleasure I remember Roy, Who used to be quite a ladies boy, His beauing days seem to be o'er, Since he has taken over his fathers store. Hammers and saws were Herbs delight, He dreamed of building day and night, Now building a skyscraper tall, He considers no job at all. Going, going, gone is the auctioneer's yell, Go to John Powell if you've anything to sell He'll put your junk on the block, Dishes, pans and rockers that won't rock. 1 7 In Holl wood Oscar is the name of fame, Y In Wilson it must be the same, For among the farmers Robert is tops, Noted for the excellence of his crops. There's Hurky, who spent ma.ny a day, While in the organization of the F. F. A., This line of work he has followed, And is now a farmer of Frog Hollow. Shirley Myers and Helen Schaal, Have answered now to duties call, They work beside the patient's beds, Till there's hope that they aren't dead. Joyce Salisbury wanted the city life, To her a small town was a cause of strife, She lives in Lockport and currently rules, The library of a new high school. It seems our '47 Senior Play Led one of our classmates astray, Though she studied business, Gene's now paid For working as a professional maid. And Pat, who did before a mirror preen, Hoping some day to be a movie queen, And Madam Dionne she has outclassed, In doing her bit to make the race last. Amid the virgin oak and pine, Work two old school friends of mine, It's Chub and John, now forest rangers, Who fear neither flood, fire or other dangers. Syracuse, Colegate and Notre Dame, Rog still lives a life of fame, . g A Now a professional basketball star, ' But we all knew he'd get that far. They ruffled his hair and satfon his lap They both tought their boss-was quite a chap, It's Punk and Murph right in there pitching Each one hoping to make a hitching. ' Of Romeos, Main had quite a store, In fact, she said more than a score, But Eleanor now has settled down to one, And has three daughters and one fine son. Through our classrooms a.nd through our halls, Passed a girl named Eleanor Walz, Time to do what I want to do Her ambition has at last come true. A girl in every port is the sailors way, No exception is Jimmy, they say, Love 'em and leave 'em and not look back, Is Cap't. Voit's method of attack. She can cut and clip and wave your hair, From your face remove the lines of care, -Home of Schiethier is writ on her place, Go to her she'll re-do your face. A mighty, intrepid hunter he, He chases game o'er land and sea, Johnny Curtiss is this lad of renown, Who resided of yore on Ransomville town. Sharps and flats are her forte She spurns lads who come to court, Music with her comes first, they say, And from this rule, Doris will not sway. Sodas and sundaes she used to dispense, With a delicate hand and artistic sense, - But if you are low and not feeling so well, Go to Laura, she has the right drug to sell. s f 'J'-Q 7 KXXlf ffX I KA J 1 , Sz E? The first League game with Lyndonville the Wilson huskies won very handily 26-12. In the non-league game, Newfane Central held Wilson to a 13-13 tie, only to fall later to the Wilsonites, 32-12, in a game played at Krull Park, Olcott, New York. In it's final League game, Royalton-Hartland was snowed under 51-0. Roger Moore led the Wilson team scoring with 36 points. Newcomers, Nicker- son, Schmidt, Taylor, and Ensminger, all with some football experience, gave Wilson a slight advantage over it's opponents. Wilson used two teams with noted success, one team being on a near par with the other. The starting team, referred to by Coach Hutchison as team A, was made up of Moore, Nickerson and Neumann in the backfield, with Walder, Schmidt, and Ensminger in the line. Team B found Tidley, Taylor, and Luff in the backfield, with McLennan and Mosher alternating and Carew, Faery, and Seefeldt on the line, with Rogers and Seefeldt alternating. High scorer for the season with 217 points, Roger Moore ended his fourth year in basketball competition for Wilson as one of the outstand- ing players of the Niagara-Orleans League. Don Mosher, a returned vet, fitted into the winning aggregation as a stellar guard, scoring 115 points to carry off 2nd place in that department. John Schermer- horn, the most improved player on the club, Louis Neuman, and Chub' Ridley completed the first championship five. Neuman and Ridley's ex- cellent defensive play enabled Wilson to be the best defensive team of the Niagara-Orleans League. Neuman is the only one of the first five to be back for another year. Paul Thomsen, Bob Carew, and Roger Seefeldt saw plenty of action NIAGARA-ORLEANS STANDINGS GAME SCORES 30 won lost per. OUR CHORUSES This year the choruses were composed of about seventy members each. The Boys' Chorus, composed of boys from both junior and senior high school, the Girls' Chorus, and the Mixed Choir were all under the direction of Miss Edna Rawson. The latter two groups consisted of high school students only. The Junior Chorus of junior high school students was under the leadership of Miss Dorothy Dane. The most ambitious enterprise of the years was the Christmas program, in which all the choruses performed individually and in combination. Most impressive was the Cathed- ral Scene. A magnlficent stained-glass window, designed and executed by Mrs. Lee and the art students, was used as the backgronmd to lend atmosphere to this scene. From the first chord of the processlonal until the last echo of the recessional died out over an hour later this phase of the program was uniformly impressive. The effective use of lighted candles by all members of the participating groups proved to be the final touch of perfec- tion. Throughout the year various smaller groups were formed to sing on special occasions A girls' ensemble sang between the acts of the senior play. A boys ensemble sang at the Methodist Church Birthday Supper. At this writing other similar dates are tentatively scheduled for the future. The choruses are now working for two principal objectives: the Spring Concert and the finals of the New York State music competition for public schools, to be held at Am- herst Central School in May. Besides the choruses, we shall also enter several soloists. 44 Q JUHIUH RED CROSS Row 1 - Bartz, Ringleb, Kelly, Miller, LeVan, La Van Row 2 - Oritz, Singer, Clark, McLellan, Battles, Miss Carruthers, Walz, Bartz LIBHHHU CUUHCIL Seated - Tower, Mrs. Ness Row 1 - O'Bora, Foster, Zastrow, Hopkins, Lamp- man, Fogg Row 2 - LaVan, Sallisbury, Wilcox, Jensen, Marks 45 fuwnf fnnmfas Row 1 - Russell, Collins, Lisman, Burnett, Williams, Figura, Hurtgam, Kneeppel, Seefeldt Row 2 - Rohring, Schultz, Luff, Faery, Mr. Waite, Figura, Peterson, Tracey, Munch, Sweet Row 3 - Krueger, Alexander, Fenn, johnson, Seefeldt, Clark, Munch, Tooker, Lederhouse, I-Iurtgam, Cramer, Lafler Row 4 - Wager, Goodridge, Wilson, Harrington, Goodma.n, Mea.hl, Keyes, Sanger, Walker, Baker, Himmelback SCIENCE CLUB Row 1 - Figura, Flagler, Taylor, Sornberger Row 2 - Rohring, Mr. Johnson, Foster, Hamll, Hopkins, Mr. Richardson, Sa.nger, Smith Row 3 - Burnett, Tower, Einstein, Burton, Flynn, MacMillan, Bartz, Smith, Blemaster Row 4 - Himmelbeck, Mielke, Southard, Harrington, Singer, Blacklock, Wheeler, Ward 46 HUIHE ECUHUHIICS SHUP 47 HRT IJISPEHSHHU gli 'Ouv Lc.o..Aex sgQ.ma cmuxma' P,3,,9fpd,Q,,' R 'S KKK Qkickw 0U omA C,om'wx 9 -rwwf' :Jing K-A f fm S 19- 7 3' wk 5, I , .1 A ,X-ral,- g,,' ig 1 ..
