W LES MEMUIREQ Published by The Class of 1977 Volume Number LIV X W DEDICATIDN , We, the class of 1977, would like to convey our fondest appreciation to one of the greats of Wilson. She is a woman of many talents and qualities. This rare beauty, with her unique charm and dignity, gladly aids all those who seek her help. She is responsible for transforming a dull school paper into a thriving popular publication. To occupy this space, one must make their mark at Wilson by displaying leadership, responsibility, and concern for the students. In a few short years this educator of writing and speaking certainly has made her mark. VWith befitting honor, we dedicate this edition of LES MEMOIRES to Mrs. Barbara Beck. hi K Misty water color memories . . .ll Of the way we were. ,N ,..k mwasf-gg, ,W 1 1 1 ' X f j' u J I' V xr V V A 1 Y ,J -X 1 ' X , xf,,J ,wxjxffixy Wy!! We've learned and experienced only as much as we have permitted ourselves to, as we prepared for our niche in life. The real world is out there waiting in anxious anticipation for every one of us, each as a unique individual. LES MEMOIRES is mere ink and paper. Its ultimate purpose, however, is to insure s for ourselves the safekeeping of the thoughts and memories we leave behind. David J 4 DiVentura , ,y it Editor-in-chief r t . H 1' ya,-f 1- cw fr.,, W L U x,3.a it J , is L. a 49 The painting of Eastern Overa1l's wall may have been the biggest controversy of our senior year. After the preliminary meetings in the spring of 1976 design 5 was presented to the wall committee by Chris Young. In the fall of 1976 design 6 was presented by Mike Stout. Design 7 was submitted by a group of seniors. Design 3 was modified into design 4. Finally design 2, drawn by Sue Fisher, was derived from 4 and 6 . The decision was made at a class meeting to disregard the previously taken votes. The class members present compro- mised and decided to submit the sketch to Mr. Shapiro, owner of Eastern Overall, for approval. He rejected the idea saying that he preferred a symbol to a slogan. Consequently design 1 was contrived and ultimately became our wall. Many seniors were disillusioned by the perplexing meet- ings, the hassles and the divided class. They considered the permission slips and arrangements making annoying details. When we reminisce about our wall, enough time will have passed by for us to realize a few important facts that got lost in the shuffle. We did paint a wall, we did have fun, and we did prove that the Class of 7'7 does have pride in our class 55 Z and in our school. NOI S0 hard! Monkey in the middle We will remember Our Wilson Warrior Band has won awards from Dis- ney World, Florida to Niagara Falls, Canada: yet many people only see it during half time at a foot- ball game - if they stay in the stands. Every year, the band comes out in the sweltering heat of August to get ready for their football games and competi- tions. Practices are from early morning to late after- noon, in the summers. When school starts they prac- tice every day after school 'til 5 under relentless repetitions from their fearless leader saying, One more time . This year they brought chimes onto the field for homecoming, but their season didn't stop there. They began practicing for concerts on stage, and also provided the orchestra for Bye, Bye, Birdie and Funny Girl. So, next time you watch the band at half time, remember all of their efforts, and maybe you'1l clap a little harder. Rice, B. Bogarl B Frankenfleld T TEAM PHYSICIAN Dr Laubach Scartoli, N. Hanni, S. Walmsly ul' Rrddled with injuries from the outset of S63- son, the Wilson football team struggled to stay alive. Gary Buckman, last year's thousand yard rusher, was out for the season with a knee injury. No one expected the Warriors to pro- duce very much without him. However, to their great team spirit and great coaching they stuck together and overcame their handi- caps. Hamilton and Crivellaro filled the back- field and produced a powerful one-two punch up the middle. Unfortunately, the offense was 44 long time . a little inexperienced and they didn't gel until the middle of the season. Unlike the offense, the defense was very experienced. The defense which was the backbone of the team, kept the games close until the offense could get it together. This team didn't have many supers- tars. They were just average players that, with great determination and pride, put together one of the best seasons that Wilson has had for a Doug WAR! They were the first team in Wilson's history to go undefeated and unscored upon. Learning the system that Wilson uses was not an easy task for these future stars. Never doubting that some day their long-running losing streak would be bro- ken. This year, the glorious year of 1977, that streak was broken, torn down, and smashed in the most emotionally charged game of the season. On January 26, Salisbury was the guest to the first Wilson victory in over fifty games. Coaches Nancy Chamberlain and Gus Mellick never lost faith in the team and knew this year would find Wilson as winners once more. As of this writing, the second half is not yet over, but neither are the victories of the 1977 Wilson High School Girls' Basketball Team . The brass choir Cupper rightj gave us an antiphonal effect by having two choirs, one on each side of the stage, at Christmas time. The concert band flower middlej, the same size as the marching band, plays on stage at Christ- mas and spring. This year, they are going to give a con- cert in Toronto. The members are the same in both bands. The orchestra Knot shownj combines with Easton's orchestra to become the A11- City Orchestra. They perform in spring at alternating schools. The stage band Crightj goes into competition with other schools of the area, usually held at Easton High School. Many of these mem- bers are part of the Funny Girl orchestra. These ensembles are not publicized as much as the marching band, but they deserve to be. So come out and enjoy their concerts. I 1 1 i X 1 BRASS CHOIR - 1st ROW: E. Snyder, N. Moser, S. Curnow, R. This year, the Wilsonnaires provided music for a block party on Christmas Eve. They managed to sing angellically despite the freezing weather. The Makeup Crew, Stage Crew and Mr. Reese, added a little something extra to the performances. The directing by Mr. Kaye and Mr. Segal was only of the highest quality, and Barb Fairchild did more than her share as Student Director. Special thanks to Me1issa'Kraus for the extra time she put in, learning Fanny's part in one crash-course. It was fantastic. Congrats! Both the Men's and Women's Faculty gained victories this year in the annual Senior-Faculty games, but in a very contrasting fashion. The men pulled away from our senior boys early and went on to romp '73-42. The Senior girls, however, made a brilliant comeback only to come up short, 34-31. Not only did the games give our seniors a chance to get even for six years of aggravation from the faculty, but it also provided S600 . Memories, may be beautiful . . . and yet. thoughts too painful to remember . . . we simply choose to for- get. So it's the laughter, we will remember, whenever we remember, the way we were. 9 S06 Q? Dearest Readers It has been our goal to compile as complete a collection of memories as possible. In order to obtain our goal, our advisors, editors and staff have initiated a supplement to the 1977 edition of LES MEMOIRES . Our original intent was to give spring sports the thorough cover- age they deserve. Senior memories were also given priority. We're confident that graduation, the class trip, and Wilson Day will be a valuable asset to our publication. Although this will intensify the stress and strain of the staff and extend our meetings into the summer months, we feel that it's well worth our time. The continuation of this innovation is up to you, our readers. Don't disappoint us. Thanks for patronizing our year- book. Sincerely, yours, The Staff. 35 f - 'Y' - X: 1 N 1 1 i ,X JM .K va . 5 -,psf -155. Ml as if ,,f, , ,1., A .4 H: , I A .,- . 4 vi- , '1s :vi- ' . r , A 3 1-,Y-5, ' q'?7r.13gg .
