He is lVlr. Thomas l. Burke, head of the English department. His warmth radiates from the gap between his teeth and reaches out to all. We have him to thank for rescuing us from the dull routine ot a single boring English course and instead, channeling our interests into the varied themes ot the mini-courses. We, the class ot 1976, would like to take these two dimensions ot time and space to show our appreciation to you and dedicate this edition ol LES MEMOIRS to you tor dedicating your time and hard work torus. You may wonder, Just who is this multi talented man? Well, wonder no longer! He is our own dashing and charismatic Mr. Thomas Burke. Here we see Mr. Burke doing some ol his imitations of famous people. 1. Wilt the Stilt Burke has total like body control and grace. 2. Good night and good news. AI Cronkite. 3. And it's a homer! loe Garagiola Burke yells enthusiasti- cally as he comments on the Super Bowl game of 76. 4. Here we see President Burke address the 205th Session of Con- gress on the proposed amendment to the Constitution changing the National Anthem to the French version of Meet the Mets! 5. Howard Cosell interviewing box- ing experts getting their opinion on which round Ali will go down. 6. Olympic gold medalist and international sex symbol demon- strates his superior form. 7. All we are saying is give peace a chance. Mr. Burke control of the boards as he rips another rebound from mid air. Notice the almost ballet- l he needs is a pipe and a little grey around the temples to be a dead ringer for Walter shows he is a follower of Lennon as well as Marx. Tom Gutekunst, Treasurer Michele A. Rodriguez, Vice President Robbie Wiedner, President Linda Fisher, Secretary Ms. Marian T. Martin and Mr. Michael Reyda, Advisors The Class of 1976 would like to thank Ms. Martin and Mr. Reyda for their hard work and selfless dedication to our class. 42 ADVISORS This years senior class aside from being the Bicentennial year has many interesting characteristics which set it apart from other years l guess you could call us the Money Bags class said Marian T Martin class advisor. We re in better financial shape than any other class has been We have our honest treasurer, Tom Gutekunst to thank for keeping such good track of the funds. Although, we do wonder where he got the money to pay forhis car. The class of 1976 made over 31600 at the refreshment stands last year and we had to turn people down at the prom, added Michael Reyda advisor. Other interesting features of our class officers are Tom Gutekunst, who was the only officer with a three year term as class treasurer, Linda Fisher and Michele Rodriguez with two terms each, in their sophomore and senior years. Aside from Robbie Cltresidentb, we have the same officers as the sophomore year, pointed out Ms. Martin, and we were the only class to have had two presidents in one year. The four officers agreed that the class of 1976 is something ol' George Washington would be mighty proud of. 6 KAREN S. ALLEN lr. High Chorus 7,83 lr. High Cheering 83 Pep Club 7'10Q Soph. Hop Dec. The newly-erected Sheraton-Easton Inn was the location at which fashion- able couples dined and danced to the group, Montana. There were mixed reactions as to the success of the affair. Some ex- pressed satisfaction and commented that it was an enjoyable evening. Others complained that the Sheraton was much too crowed for either comfort or mobility on the dance floor. One significant feature for which the class of '76 certainly deserves credit is the fact that, for the first time since the proms have moved out of the gym and into rented halls students were allowed after a hard fight, to drive their own automobiles. Although the prom was not as huge a success as all would have liked it to have been we established ourselves as respon- sible and mature young people. ug E ti ,Kg in X i if ,. 1 P Y: it W M i4 we film .fu674 l'E r-PQ IIVIOSQY' JM, Spvxxor DNW 050 j M Q34 W Q WMM? SOPHOMORES ORDER NEW RING STYLES The class of 1978 started their year off with some- thing new. That something was the ordering of a new type and style of class rings. Although the class has just gotten orgainzed, the major project, the sophomore hop, is already under way. The advisors feel that this year will be a good one under the leadership of president Jeff Breidnger. CARWASH AIDS JUNIORS This year's junior class is already on the move. The most important event they are planning, is of course, the lr.-Sr. Prom. Aplace and date have already been set, Hotel Bethle- hem on Nlay first. The class is hampered financially because of only 3 home football games at which they realized roughly 3700. profit. To compensate for this shortage of homegames they will be taking the profits from one of next year's homegames. Another added fundraiser was the junior carwash. ln total we raised approximately 331,054 dollars, said ad- visor Mr. Eckert. A fine effort by the class of '77. 1 fp - i 1 . I 3 . i r f... F l ,. , . Posing a threat to all the teams in the league, the Racqueteers were held to a 5-5 record in the fierce competition. Under the guidence of Coaches Bev Roberts and Sid Segal and Team Captain Rayna Smith, the girls put in grueling hours on the courts developing their skills. Practice started as early as lune and went to late October. The girls will be looking tor- ward to rebuilding next year, as they will be loosing four seniors. Good luck Racqueteers! The Girls' Basketball Team has proven that they are winners. They lost every game during the first half of the season and, as of this writing, the second half is undertimined. How then, can they be called winners? Simple. For the past two years they have been belittled because of their poor record. But they brushed off the insults and continued on. They're nothing but bad news. And what's worse, our unsuspecting citizens have fallen for their treacherous ways. What was once Sweetapple, Ohio is not Sin City, U.S.A.! Today students are less fortunate, for Tom retired from announcing all sporting events during the 1974-75 school year. But we will always remember his quick wit and his many voices. And of course no one can forget his great acting ability in class. Barbara Beck Ever wonder what it's like to be in charge of a big, famous newspaper? To control hundreds of reporters and staff members? The presure! The excitement! The decisions! Why not ask Barbara Beck? She's the advisor for the Echo. It may not be the New York Times, but it does help the students learn what it takes to make a paper good. Barbara enjoys working with her students on the Echo. It was also selected to be a representative in the Miss America Parade in Atlantic City, and the Lion's Parade in Hershey Pa. The band performed with their usual degree of excellence. Also, in three major marching band competitions, Boyertown, Easton, and Dieruff Cavalcades, the band achieved two Outstandings and one Excellent rating for its superior showmanship. Our contribution to the bicen- tennial celebration . . . Even through many ot us are tired ot our nickname t'The Bicentennial Class , something had to be done to commemorate our nation's 200th birthday. After all, something like this only happens once every one hundred years. The design was created by Dan Young, a very artistic senior. The painting took three days with over thirty kids pitching in. A total of seventy gallons of paint was used. lust for lun clothes were painted red, white, and blue. When tired ot painting, everybody got together for a wild soccor game. lt was quite an experience. Mrs. Beck feels that the transition of the Echo from just a regular paper into a mini course was an excellent idea and is working well lt exposes more students to journalism this way, and she added the old students come back to teach the new. ln the journalism course Mrs. Beck teaches and insists upon the established standards ol ethical journalism and puts them to use in the Echo. As a check on her paper, she has a reporter from the Morning Call come in and give a detailed critique of each Echo. Throughout the year, Mrs. Beck has made little public comment on the W.l.P. She does feel, however, that the Echo needn't be the only newspaper in Wilson and a second and even third paper is welcome as long as they adhere to good journalism practices. Since The Echo is produced in a journalism class, there is always the problem Ccharacteristic ol any classj to have a few goof offs Mrs. Beck has solved the problem of the non-contributing student By her request, Fundamentals of Writing must now be taken as a prerequisite so that everyone who is there wants to be there and does the work. And so, throughout the school the word was spread of the birth of a new paper, the Warrior Independant Press. The W.l.P. tits most common titlej was the brain- child of Charlie Dodge, who, up until this time, had held an inobtrusive type image and also wrote for the school's established paper, The Echo. What were Dodge's motives for taking on all the extra work involved in run- ning a paper, and leaving The Echo? Dodge claims that The Echo refused to print most of what he wrote and edited too much. He also didn't agree with the fact that The Echo was limited to those who took journalism as a mini course. In the W.l.P., Dodge incorporates ideas from his favorite magazines, especially Time, as you may have noticed from many of his covers. What about The Echo? Well Dodge admits he uses a few ideas from there, too. He calls it Vox Pop, or items which appeal to the student body such as mazes, puzzles and a renamed Echo's through the Halls called Wilson Whispers. Dodge says he gained great business experience from doing the W.l.P.. He prefers to keep his staff a secret because he says that teachers are prejudiced against him and would be the same to his stall tif they knew who it consisted of.J What will happen to the W.l.P. after its founder is gone? According to Dodge, lt will still be here, perhaps not as elaborate but to serve as a check on the Echo. x , .frsiglxf fx so ROOM PUS M CA E TH Lori Krenik proves that seniors do other things besides watch TV during Their free periods.
