DEDICATION Although we will always look back on our high school days as the happiest time of our lives, there are sad moments which have occurred in them also. On March 9, 1960, we were stunned to hear of the death of one of Wilson's most valued teachers, Clare Thomas johnson. An excellent teacher, a valued advisor, a sincere and kind friend has left us, but his impact on Wilson High School is timeless. The dean of area track coaches, he won for his school more Lehigh- Northampton League titles than any other area coach. Besides coaching the team to victory in the Bethlehem Relays of 1954-55, he provided Wilson with two State Championships in track. He had been honoured by the Varsity W Club numerous times, and was a charter member of the Easton area PIAA Track officials. A Bumps Johnson award is given to the winner of the Triangular Track meet every year in his honour. An official of his church, johnson was cited by many civic organizations, and was named Teacher of the Monthv in the spring of 1959. I can find no more appropriate words to describe Clare johnson than these modeled from Shakespeare: This was the noblest warrior of them all: He only, in a general honest thought And common good to all, helped all. His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in them that nature might stand up And say to all the world, This-was a man! He so lived that when his summons came to join The innumerable caravan which moves to that mysterious realm Where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death He went not like the quarry slave at night scourged to his dungeon But sustained and soothed and with an unfaltering trust Approached his grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him and lies down to pleasant dreams. Therefore, we, the Class of 1960, dedicate this edition of the Les Memoires to the memory of Clare T. johnson. 6
