Letter To The Reader As you page through this yearbook you may be wondering why the class ol l95li chose the theme Time. The staff decided on this idea partly because of the format ol' the popular news maga zine ol' the same name, but mostly be cause they had read these words front the Bible. They are found in Ecclesiastes ll l k o l-8 For everything there is a reason, and a time lor every put pose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to dieg a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted a time to kill, and a time to healg a time to break down, and a time to build upg a time to weep, and a time to laugh: a time to mourn, and a time to dance: tl fl a time to seek, and a time to lose: a time to keep, and a time to cast away: a time to rend, and a time to sew: ' time to C2lSt away stones, and a time to gather stones together ' time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing a time to keep silence, and a time to speak: a time to love, and a time to hate: a time for war, and a time for peace: THE S'rAI-'F Index Foreword ............. Administration and Staff 7 Activities and Clubs Seniors .............................. 25 Advertisements .......... 9 Man of the Year For Man of the Year we nominate john Derkac, who has been a teacher in our industrial arts department for nine years. When Mr. Derkac came to Wilson, this department was expanded to include plastics, art metal, wrought iron, machine metal, basic electricity, and home mechanics. At the present time Mr. Derkac is instructor in wood- work. He is faculty adviser of the stage crew, which erects scenery for plays, operettas, band concerts. junior proms and other dances, commencements, and many other com- munity projects, He is also adviser of the Freshman Model Club. Active in the field of sports, Mr. Derkac was assistant football coach from 1947-1949, junior high school basket- ball coach from 1947-19505 and has been scout for varsity football for the last seven years. For his unselfish service in the interest of the school, for his friendly guidance and cheerful personality, we are happy to dedicate this volume of Les Memoires to 1 JOHN DERKAC 4 TY Time is Your Time The Senior Class of 1956 would like to thank the faculty and administration for numerous things. It would indeed be difficult to get along without the basic skills that they have taught us, they, along with our parents, have showed us how to think for ourselves and how to form our own opinions. For these things, we will be eter- nally grateful. Most of all though, we thank them for the time they have taken to help us with our problems. Time is of value to anyone, but to a teacher who has tests to make up, class- room teaching, papers to grade, and extra-curricular ac- tivities to supervise, it is doubly valued. Probably we have never appreciated till now the fact that our teachers, principal, and guidance counsellors are always ready to give us advice and to help us when we run into trouble. Thank you again, faculty and administration. 6 Tl- x. , -, f I. 'x' , u- , ' ln I ' - '- , ,J .4.,.'- '5-' ' K I .ly -' 'I-'. 'N -.'..- +, ..g- 5:fv'3'..Z1', J . 'KL-X Sl' . ., Raul V. -.- ' . It was just yesterday that we went to our own Junior Prom, only a couple of weeks ago that we were freshmen. It certainly can't be six years ago that we entered Wilson High. As we stop to realize that we are graduating from high school, we think of the many, many things that have hap- pened to us in these few years. We have made what were to us the most important decisions we could make. Should we take algebra or typing, go out for football or track, go to college or take a job? We have been to our first dances, assumed responsibilities for the first time, been treated as adults, and perhaps met our future mates. Now we can see that time, especially these past six years, have played a most important part in our lives. We will never again be-the Senior Class of 1956. 24 frm rf 1 1 i v ROLLIN A. :XL'l'IiNlOSE Alt Hi-Y 10, 11, 12: Te.-n Age count-ii 10, 11, 12 tr-105.1 Printing . . . Navy calling . . . They are enthusiastic about their studies and activitiesg they are responsible for our new clubsg they pre- sent the most entertaining assemblies. For many of us, the most thrilling moments at Wil- son High have been those spent on the gridiron, track, baseball field, or basketball court. YV e haven't always won, but we have enjoyed every minute of every game, whether it was that big Thanksgiving Day football contest, or a quick basketball session in gym class. Sports have taught us muscular co-ordination, the val- ue of teamwork, and, of course, sportsmanship. Mfe dis- covered that there is value in losing as well as Winning. Time has been called for the seniors, so here is the record with pictures of those thrilling moments. TRlBU'I'li TO GEORGE CARLING V.-XRSITY CLUB XV AXVARD I.. J MQ! ,S Carling-Faculty Manager Football The 1955 football season was not exactly the most successful in the won and lost col- umn, but in the true l-Vilson spirit, our YVar- riors came through. NVQ opened the grid year, as usual, oppos- ing the Red Rovers of the school down the street. The charges olf coach Lionel Jud Hall displayed first class football in the first half, but the third and fourth periods spelled doom for the l'Varriors as Easton defeated us by a 19-6 score. Larry Correll, our senior quarterback, crossed the goal line on a quar- terback sneak for our only score. After Easton, we played our first home game against the Allentown Central Catholic Vikings. The 1-Iallmen struck hrst blood on sophomore Fred Gensheimefs first period touchdown, but again the X'Varriors fell in defeat by the score of 19-7. X'Vilson's record, but not spirit and confi- dence, sank deeper as we met a strong Phil- lipsburg squad. The men under the shield of the Blue and Gold played heads up ball, but the strength of our foes from across the river was too much, and we bowed to a 31-0 score. Then came Bangor and the Lehigh-North ampton League. On a water and mud sat- urated Bangor held, the X'Varriors triumphed over the Maroon and Mfhite Slate Pickers on the basis of T. D.s by Elmo Helm, john Mur- ray, and two by liddie VanHorn. Gensheimer converted twice and the T-Varriors became vic- torious in their first L. N. Bout, 26-7. Following an open date, X'Vilson met the Cavaliers of East Stroudsburg in our second Lehigli-Northampton game. Although dis- playing top-notch gridiron prowess, Elmo Helm and junior jim Frank hit paydirt, but the Xlfarriors came out on the short end of a 13-12 score. Wi1son's record now stood at 1-41. Our second win came at the expense of the Pen Argyl Green Waves on enemy soil. The slate region lads were too inexperienced and weak for the l'Vilson lujuns and the Hall- men gained a 25-0 shutout. Xfvillllfd Elmo Helm crossed tl1e end zone stripes 3 times and jim Frank once. Frosh jim Palmer split the uprights once to round the scoring. After another open date and week of rest, the Warriors hit the grind again to meet the Slatington High eleven on home soil. VV. H. S. had no trouble as they rolled over the Slaters 34-6. Helm, Correll, Murray, junior Floyd Hartranft, and sophomore Dick Siga- foos connected for tallies. Palmer converted three times and X'Vilson had won their third game. Another football season was brought to a close on Thanksgiving Day when the War- riors met their arch rivals, the Nazareth Blue Eagles. The Hallmen batted the birds in Eas- ton's Cottingham Stadium, but fell to a 27-7 loss. Our T. D. was scored by none other than tackle, Captain Aloe Ciambrone. joe fell on john Murray's fumble in the second period to round OHL the VVilson scoring for the '55 cam- paign. -jim Palmer booted the extra point. All in all it was a rough season due to in- juries, bad breaks, and fumbles, as the Grid- iron Grenadiers of the Blue and Gold con- cluded the season with a 3-5 record. Tweety seniors erded Il1C'l' football careers at 'LJ.iso- after tae final whistle blew at the hlazrkcy Classic. Titty are Captain joe Ciam- brone, .john Lesher, Bill Vohs. This group arranges the schedules, picks the captains of the various teams, and selects the names to be used for the teams. This year the Council also sponsored the sale of YVHS dinks. The program of intramurals is sustained to teach the girls the fundamentals of different sports, to try to promote teamwork, and to en- courage good sportsmanship. The volleyball teams were named for types of candy. A jun- ior team, the Bits io Honey, captained by Annette Scarpantonio and co-captained by Jeanne Vannatta, captured the volleyball championship. The basketball teams this year - Miss BRUNNER took the titles of different types of cars. A Senior team, the Paekards, captained by Carol Jacoby and ccrcaptained by Ruthie Gibbs, won the championship for the school after a long, hard battle. A team of senior girls, selected by the In- tramural Couneil, defeated a team of junior girls, selected by the same group, in a pre- liminary game before our annual Donkey Basketball Game this season. Badminton proved to be another one of our very interesting and exciting intramurals. Although our intramural program is not flawless, everyone has enjoyed participating init and has gained a great deal in the World of girls' sports. We hear the band out on the field playing those stirring marches and getting in shape for that long awaited trip to Miami, sponsor- ed by the lfVilson Lions' Club. A new vocal group this year was the Mixed Chorus. This group consisted of forty-five fellows and girls from senior high. lfVhile practicing only Monday mornings during activity period, the chorus mastered twelve pieces and participated in the Student Coun- cil Christmas assembly. From the forty-five members of the chorus, twelve were selected to form a specialty group called the Wilson- aires. This group is expected to grow into a typical VVilson championship organization next year. , 98 The Girls' Glee Club worked very hard this year to present the annual operetta, The Belle of Baghdad presented on March 23-24. The Glee Club, numbering about 60 girls, also learned some all-time favorites, such as Oklahoma, and Young and Foolish. The Dance Band was a gay group this year, improving as TY ME passed. They played for many programs including the Echo Dance, The Basketball Bounce, honoring the basketball team. The orchestra played for the senior play and put on a special program for the P. T. A. They also accompanied the chorus and singers in the operetta and played lor all assemblies. One of the secrets of our great band is the experience learned in the Junior Band. The Junior Band practices every Monday and they give their own concert in the spring. 'i I ORCHESTRA FIRST Row-Hilbert, Grube, Hager, Encelewski, Gibhs, Pelcrs, Aagaard. Litsinger, Mr. Sherry. Under the excellent leadership of its officers and the guidance of Mr. Myron Rit- ter, the club has had a successful year. The club fulfilled its purpose of creating, maintaining and extending throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character in many ways. They answered the appeal by CARE for funds for the people of Italy during the severe cold wave this winter. They contributed to the Blind Association, Red Cross, and Community Chest. The club sold refreshments along with the Y-Teens at football games and presented RICHARID E. SHELLING THOMAS EICHLIN WVILLIAIVI HOSKING - DAVID Koen - LARRY Cokxrzu, Ma. NIYRON Rl'l1'liR their annual gift to the school. One of the highlights of the Hi-Y year was the Older Boys Conference held in Abing- ton. Tllirty-two boys attended the conference and all had a rich fand expensivej experience. The Hi-Y also sent a basketball team to the Christmas Invitational Tournament in Allentown and finished second, losing out in the Hnal game by two points. Among the other activities of the club were hayrides, meetings with speakers, a ping- pong tournament, and the Spring Fling, the annual dance. The club closed out its year with its annual banquet, the last big event for the outgoing seniors. Fnxsr Row-Cosover, Bonanni, D. Miller, Wcinerlh, Kemmercr, Meyers. Moranz, Mr. Meyers. The club has been very active in its first year. Seven olliccrs, including a representative to the Junior Board of Directors of the Easton, Phillipsburg, and Vicinity YMCA, have been elected, and the club's first constitution has been drawn up. Some of the club's projects have been as follows: participation in a nation- wide course to combat juvenile delinquency, presentation of an assembly for the junior high, and a series of trips to places of interest in the city of Easton, including a Jewish synagogue, the county courthouse, and the county jail. The club has been a success in its first year of operation, and many of the boys will probably go on to become members of the Senior Hi-Y. 105 FIRST Row-Jacoby, Piazza, Bachman, Yeager, Young, Renkwitz, McElroy. The Junior-Senior Y-Teens sponsored a Mlhite Elephant booth at the annual Christ- mas Bazaar, co-operated with Hi-Y in putting on a Halloween Dance for the combined clubs, sold refreshments at football and bas- ketball games, sent two representatives to the Mid-Hlinter Conference, and heard many various speakers give talks on numerous inter- esting subjects. Also, a senior girl was great- ly responsible for the making of a scrapbook about Easton to be sent to' Germany as a gift from all Y-Teens in the area. Sophomore Y-Teens shared lots of good times, too. Selling refreshments was their part in the Christmas Bazaar. Activities throughout the school season included: a baby picture contest, a talk on teaching as a career, the decoration of Easter eggs for the Mas. EvAi.vN HAWK Old Ladies Home, group singing with the 7th and 8th grade clubs, and entertainment for the Mother-Daughter Tea held in the spring. Freshmen Y-Teens really put in a vigorous year in the mad social whirl at W.H.S. Christ- mas, especially, held much interest for the group, for not only did they sponsor a booth at the Christmas Bazaar, but they sold greet- ing cards and filled baskets of food and gifts for needy families. But their list of accom- plishments does not stop there. They put on a variety show assembly, had their own hat show, invited other clubs to share meetings with them, and were entertained by a multi- tude of guest speakers. Seventh and eighth grade Y-Teens have made a good showing by having panel discuss- ions, group singing, speakers, an assembly program, spring fashion shows, parties and games.
