Eager for the next four years of serious- ness and fun, they made their mark in scholarship, music, track and games. Whenever there was work to be done you always saw their names. They worked for good cf others and had a lot of fun. The boys had no society, such as the girls had, so H1-Y was organized for every high school lad. Each year the boys and girls did their very best with solos, band and orchestra along with all the rest. As freshman they were entered with the crowd. Girls glee club rated Excellent my but they were so proud! The sophomore year was much the same with chorus, glee club and band. Duke sang with I ,, A Ptne quartet and got a rousing 1 4 ' ..':: , - 7, 'J 4 . 'Jil QT L -V X .. 41 bp It ..-fy. I 3 - 1 K gall f Eff ,233 'L 'ai--IX x 'sy J . ,, V Z' hand. Gary played his alto horn and did his classmates proud. Betty's singing, too, was nice though not so loud. As esteemed juniors Izzy joined the girls and made their number ten. She sang in glee club and chorus, so did the seven men. Seven were also members of the band. Izzy and Betty's solos sure received a hand. with horn and voice the seniors still upheld their name, while the songs of Duke and Betty added to their fame. Valora, Helen and Lois were inthe girls sextet. Marlene and Betty played with the licorice stick quar- tet. The boys withDuke :Ln their quartet created quite a scene as well as other numbers that were accompanied by Marlene. The four year record of the class in track and basketball is proof enough that they were very much on the beam. As only freshman Duke and Bill made the team. In basketball the ,fresh- man girls also had their inning. With Helen and Bettyin the gang the A team was always winning. Their sophomore year James and Duke were both getting better. They were' on the A team and each received a letter. Maurice Duke and Gary all went out for track. Maurice entered the hi- jump and brought first honors back. Helen, Marlene, Marge, and Betty played the game, but 4' ,- say, it was little Helen who L ' ,f made the regular A . Now for f Y the doings of the juniors, the ,8 - list is very long. We want to Q hurt no feelings so hope it is not wrong. Helen, Marge, Betty, X Jim, Gary, Duke and Pete played 7 a game of basketball that was g f ' very neat. They all made the A team for the girls and boys, urged on by their followers who ' 'QX made a lot of noise.-Jerome was I 'A first as mile many you should 1 see him go. Gary was third and i second in shot and discus throw. 5 Duke came in secondin the 880, and Duke and Gary ran in the re- lay that was number one. when it comes to listing competitors their class leads all the rest. M They were good as juniors, but wt as seniors they were best. Cn the A teams there were eight , girls and five boys, too, you V ' see. The track meet of '53 was E certainly worthwhile, as Jerome broke the county record running X the mile. Duke took the 14.140 to XX bring the bacon home. The win- ning medley relay was started NX by Jerome. Maurice took the hi- X jump, and several other seniors - took honors two and three. There was a Prom and Ban- quet by the Class of '53. They say the Moonlight Bay theme was G pretty as could be. They dined 1 bv and danced as guests of honor on 4' ,x April 17. Red Sails in the Sun- ',' Q set was the attractive theme. 5 Acting and dramatics was another of their gifts. Anyone who saw their plays surely got a lift. fl They gave a star production as 'W juniors in the cast. Wanted A Hero was the title with humor first till last. Presenting Mr.Co-ed' added to their glory. The playwas full of humor with a moral to the story. They've had their share of honors in Schrammels first and last from honorable mentionin algebra to typing very fast. Their rate as seniors will be another tale these ambitious students cer- tainly won't fail. This is our story as everyone can tell. we hope when you remember us, you have to say, they were swell. 42 a am f af, ,D --4 gli DEHLVFF' ELECTRIC GHERE 'S JEWELRY Wi ring-C ontrac ts -Fixtures Diamonds Watches Phone 288 Jewelry Council Grove Kansas Council Grove Kansas 1 4 1 .
