With our advisor, Miss Laura Boudreau, we elected Jennifer O ' Donnell, President; Karen Lynch, Vice-President; Nancy O ' Leary, Secretary; and Tammy Stedman, treasurer. Freshmen year was a year that will never be forgotten. The food fights, the pulled fire alarms, the smoke bombs were new to us as well as all the seniors whom we admired and wanted to be. Our class was the last to experience the original Wilmington High School. We ate lunch in the old cafe; we played basketball in the infamous Wildcat gym; and we had those broken green lockers that would never hold all of our books. We had to travel to the Swain for our industrial art classes, if in fact we went to class. Sophomore year changed dramatically from rhe year before. We entered the year late due to the renovation, which of course still is not finished four years later. Mr. Fleming praised the work of the renovation and offered monetary rewards to those who had any information leading to the vandals who broke windows and spray painted the side of our new cafe. (Litde did he know that it was only revenge from Tewksbury because we did the same to their school.) Our new renovation consisted of new lockers (Yeah!), a new science area with complete labs so that Miss Dadoly and Mr. Krey could blow up the school, a complete new industrial art center, a new large cafe big enough to accommodate three study halls, and, of course, a brand new gymnasium dedicated to the former Athletic Director, Mr. Lawrence Cushing. New rooms were not all that our sophomore year had. We had a new advisor, Ms. Mary Vesperini, but we retained our incumbent class officers. The highlights of our sophomore year were the Half-way Dance held at the Sons of Italy Hall and Hawaiian Dance at Villanova Hall. The downfall of the year happened in April when Vice-Principal Jack Lynch was paralyzed by a stroke and could not return to school. Junior year was filled with an ambitious administration with a stern, but kind, new Vice-Principal Virginia Blodgett. The year got off to a good start with the field hockey team winning the Merrimac Valley Conference Championship and going far in the state tournament. The year gradually fell apart. The administration presented the faculty, students, and parents with a new schedule for our senior year. This schedule of great I-Periods where the students may choose to have an extra activity period was opposed by many of the honor students who were basically told to go away by the administration and the school committee. Right, Kristen? One new advisor was Mr. Michael Moresco with new class officers Jennifer O ' Donnell, President; Karen Lynch, Vice- President; Jill Martyn, Secretary; and Noel Bouchie, Treasurer. Under their direction we had a fun and exciting Junior Prom at the Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover. The theme song of the prom was This Could Be the Night by Loverboy. The Queen of the Prom was Heidi Field, and the King was John McGrath. The conclusion of our Junior year was very traumatic. Incumbent president Jennifer O ' Donnell was beaten by Steven Cutone in a much heated and vicious election that offended many faculty members and students. The final year of our high school career was filled with excitement. Within days of our arrival back to school, Principal Fleming unreasonably issued a four time tardy decree, in which ISS would be enforced to those who were tardy four times or more. The students began to feel the crunch of the administration when Principal Fleming ordered detention to those late to class. Finally, the students β€” the seniors β€” had enough. We seniors decided to have a sit-in in the auditorium, which lasted more than three hours. We called the town newspaper which Principal Fleming told not to come. We were determined to solve our problems. According to the administration, there were no problems. Eventually, Mr. Fleming agreed to talk to thirty members of the Senior class. Gradually many things were changed including opening new bathrooms and finally getting a Senior Lounge. Once again our class had a new advisor, Mrs. Carol King. With the help of a new President Steven Cutone, Vice- President Karen Lynch, Secretary Melissa Peters, and Treasurer Noel Bouche, the class had successful homecoming with Jennifer DelNinno as Queen and Scott Haliday as King. With open arms, the Wilmington School System welcomed back former West Intermediate Principal William Fay as newly appointed School Superintendent. This year, the girls ' field hockey team was Merrimac Valley Conference Champions, while the girls ' soccer and basketball teams entered the state tournament. The Senior Prom, which was held on the 5th of May, was at the Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers. A fun and enjoyable 89 Day Party was at the Sons of Italy on the 16th of March. After taking our final final exams in high school, we seniors signed out and graduated from a relieved Wilmington High School. We seniors would like to thank all those faculty members who have been dear friends of ours over the past four years and who have gready contributed to the success of the Class of 1989. Matthew A. Ouellette i 142 TEACHER OF THE YEAR The senior class is proud to have chosen Mrs. Linda Hayes as the ' 89 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Hayes, who teaches Psychology, A. P. History and Careers, has been a pop- ular addition to the W.H.S. staff since 1985. She has been the Student Council and Model Congress Advisor, in addition to being the personal adviser to many students in the senior class who have needed some- one to talk to. While Mrs. Hayes ' classes are challeng- ing, her assignments are always interesting, and her evaluations are fair. She takes a personal interest in her students and is always willing to spend extra time with them. She is a familiar chaperone at dances and proms, and a frequent spectator at Wildcat sports. She began the traditional senior barbecue and the first Senior Olympics in 1988. She understands that there ' s more to the high school experience than homework, tests and class rank. Her letters of recommendation are so thoughtful and thorough that they can probably be credited with more college acceptances than the S.A.T. ' s. So, for her dedication to her profession, for her concern, for her interest in what we are and what we can become, the Class of ' 89 says, Thank you, Mrs. Hayes. We ' ll never forget you. 143 The ROTARY CLUB of WILMINGTON WISHING THE CLASS OF ' 89 CONTINUING SUCCESS 144 CONGRATULATIONS GRADS plan your next function with us. . .
