They have no faith in themselves. and they do not trust their capabilities. Because they do not .. ,Q r cntidence in themselves, they cannot find it in others. How many times have you heard the cliche if you want something done, do it your- self V .we are instantly suspicious of the motives of others, skeptical and wary would serve them, we could replace our apathy with action, our geggalr with nope. and our doubts with faith. However, we do not need a blind faith, for believing without understanding leads only to more doubt and more uncertainty. As the Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno once said Faith which does not doubt is dead enthusiasm, a faith which offers possibility. This is a faith which only the optimism of youth can offer, a renewal of hope for those who have lost the newness and excfement we bring lf we can keep this faith, we can improve, rather than destroy, our world. For as J. G. Whittier said in his poem, lchabod - When faith is lost, faith is lost, when lest they let us down. This distrust is especially ture about those who lead us. The institutions of society- govern- ment and education-are viewed as corrupt and irretrievable from their state or near collapse. Without even attempting to understand the rpo- cedures and systems created by those before us, they criticize those who lead us, and pessimism easily become the prevailing attitude of our SOClety But-what if we were to believe? What if we were to allow ourselves to trust our feelings and utilize our own resources? What if we were to believe in others and allow our faith to become their strength? lf people could trust that the institutions they have created honor diesfthe man is dead.
