With these words Rod McKuen expresses a confidence of his present and future life that l'm sure many of us cannot share. Do we really know where we're going or where we presently are? As seniors we all have plans for the future which may include college, marriage or jobs. However, there is no way to be sure that these choices will develop exactly as we foresee them. And with the present being the start of our travels, it is filled with indecisions and thoughts of what's to come. Perhaps of the past, present, and future, the only one we can try to have a clear understanding of is our past, where we've been. Over the past twelve years our lives have been influenced by many things. Our changing society, our political system and even our town have affected our outlook. As friends we've had good times and bad times, ups and downs. We've learned and worked together through high school with encouragement from our teachers and family. After today we will go our seperate ways. But as we turn our thoughts toward the future it is important that we remember our past and the lessons we can learn from it. In the past we've experienced many successes and failures which have strengthened us individually. By evaluating these experiences we can have a basis on which to improve our present and build to our future. Therefore, remember what we've done, the friends we've made and where we've been. Forget the past, and the future will be a burden to you. Learn from the past, and it will carry you into the future, or in the words of Robinson Jeffers, Lend me the stone strength of the past and I will lend you the wings of the future. Kathleen Pavelcak June 9, I974 Mr. McMahon, Mr. Garrett, Mr. Little, members of the School Committee tif any are herei, faculty, classmates, friends, relatives, people addicted to attending graduations and anyone who doesn't fit into any of the afore mentioned categories: Welcome to the graduation of the class of '74. I haven't got too many enlightening remarks to make since just about every topic has been talked to death by the speakers in the lOO classes that graduated before ours, so my attempt at oratory will be mercifully brief. Twelve years ago this day seemed an impossibly long way off. Four years ago it was right around the corner and today, well, I can hardly believe that it has finally arrived. It seems like yesterday that we were just starting first grade. Of course, I'm sure some of my classmates will disagree, and say that it's been o long, boring lifetime so far, and that there were just too many things about high school that they wished had been different. Well, when we leave today, we will have done more than just graduate from high school. We will have graduated into society. We will for shouldl be accepted by society as mature, responsible adults, and we will then be in a position to effect changes, to improve those things about high school that we think could use a little improvement, and in fact to change society becouse we will be society. Our parents are shaking their heads at this. Let them live in the real world a little they're saying, and they'll smarten up. They'll lose some of that idealism. Five or six years from now, they'lI look back and remember high school as having been the best four years of their lives. They won't change society. Society will change them. I hope that doesn't happen. I hope we hold on to our ideals and dreams. In the words of a poet, whose name l don't remember, Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, Life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams for if dreams go, Life is a barren field of snow. I hope we will be able to change society for the better. I hope the generations after ours will be able to look up to us and will want to emulate us. I hope we can go out into the world and get things done. And in order to get this graduation done, so everybody can go home to their parties, I will finish up by giving this piece of advice to the classes behind ours, Make your high school years something you can be proud to remember. And to my classmates, I wish the best of luck in all their endeavors. Thank you. Carole-Anne Tyler June 9, i974 359- ,. .HQ gp . l fly R t 6-'fin Ai' Qi' .3 , I 'i 1 '. k R , Until today our life has followed a course which has been established by educators and guardians, but our class of i974 is now at a new stage in life. We presently stand upon the threshold of an unexplored wilderness where we will individually follow the paths which we will clear for ourselves. As we travel down our roads we can compare ourselves to leaves, which are involved in one entity, the tree of mankind. Extending this thought we should not forget that we cannot exist alone. lf a leaf falls from a tree it is not able to sustain itself and eventually perishes. Man like the leaf is dependent on his lifeline, the human race. Once an individual loses touch with humanity he ultimately ceases to properly function, lt is imperative that no man is detached from this unit. For what is mankind without the man? When a circumstance involves one individual, it affects the remaining entity. lf a man is separated from the mass the loss is felt by all, because all of us are an important segement of mankind. Being a part of mankind, we should try to honor that title. We must demand the truth for ourselves and others. Hypocracy and avarice are qualities which should be discouraged. lt is essential that we notice the world which is around us, appreciating the beauty of even a blade of grass. By this means we shall be involved in mankind and not manunkind. When there is war or peace, death or life, famine or feast, crisis or prosperity, the outcome has a bearing on the entire world. We do not sever our relations with other countries when situations occur. Whether a nation is fighting for independence, overcoming a tempest or celebrating a special event we are influenced by these incidents because we are involved with mankind. As we start on our journey those thoughts should remain with us. John Donne using a different image expresses my views by stating: No man is an island . . . Every man is a piece of the Continent . . . Any mans death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls, lt tolls for thee. Janice E. Spada June 9, l974 The history of our class really begins about l8 years ago in many different cities, but we were not officially recognized as a class until September of l97O when we entered Wil- mington High School as freshmen. Whether we realized it or not we would be known as the Class of '74' one which was even called the worst class to enter the high school. But all freshmen have their bad days so we really didn't mind, anyway, we were having too much fun socializing during daily bomb scares. Mary Castaldo, Lynn Murphy, Jay Garden, and Janice Gennetti were elected as our freshmen class officers. We shaped up in our sophomore year under the influence of the more sophisticated upperclassmen and even managed to sponsor a dance. Joey Cunningham, Jay Garden, Laurie Cormier, and Janice Gennetti handled the executive duties of the class. We also gained Mr. Woodbury as our class advisor during this year. For our busy Junior year Gail Irwin, Jay Garden, JoAnn Langone, and Janice Gennetti decided it was time they showed everyone how to run a class. We received our class rings which distinguished us from the lowly underclassmen. We also obtained responsibility cards for the first time which automatically made us responsible students. A big attrac- tion of our junior year was our Junior Variety Show which included such hits as Tennessee, Wigwalk, The Worm, WHS Beauty Contest, and a visit from Donny Osmond. On May 4, i973 we held our Junior Prom, the first semi-formal affair that most of us had ever attended. Sharon Foley was chosen by Mr. McMahon and the band as queen of the prom. We ended up our junior year with a banquet where students were recognized for their scholastic achievements. By the time we reached our senior year, Joe Lunetta, and Wendy Wiberg decided to give it a try as President and Vice-President. They were joined by experienced JoAnn Langone and Janice Gennetti as Secretary and Treasurer. To aid them in their duties was an able Execu- tive Board. Many hidden talents were discovered in the fall our senior year in THE MIRACLE WORKER , our senior class play. We held a trip into Boston Garden to see the Celtics and the Globetrotters play. During the winter many seniors braved the cold to join in a toboggan party at the town park. Although it was chilly outside, the seniors were well fortified against the cold. The night was dark and bumpy, but managed to get by with only one casualty. We showed our athletic ability once again at a Rollerskating trip to Wal-lex where almost everyone hit the dust at least once. In the spring of our senior year we voted for Senior Superlatives, Teacher of the Year, and took many pictures for the yearbook. We also had Senior Week which included Crazy Day and a parade from Weinberg's to the High School, Executive Day, 50's Day lwhich ap- peared to be the most popularl, Sports Day, and Grub Day. And of course we had to learn the finer points of how to graduate so we took time off from school to practice. Finally, the day we had all waited for, arrived - May 24. For those who showed up, it was the last day of school for seniors. Attandance was lacking because this was also the day of our prom at Anthony's Pier 4. Despite the rain outside, the 300 people aboard the ship had an enjoyable evening. They chose Terry Patenaude to be the queen. To close our Senior year we held a Senior Banquet - the last time we would eat together as seniors. Many awards and presentations were given. Probablly the most important thing that took place during our four years at Wilmington High School was the important job of choosing our own futures. All that we have attempted and accomplished together in the past will be small compared to what we can accomplish in the future both together and apart. Cheryl Lawler We, the Class of l974, have always considered ourselves to have been blessed with an overabundance of cultural background, along with a wealth of experience through our four years here, accompanied with a sense of warmth, understanding, and wisdom. The list goes on and on. Realizing this fact then, we feel compelled to share these riches by leaving some tokens of our outstanding qualities to those who can benefit by them, or perhaps use them as an inspiration in future years. lt is with this thought in mind that we, the class of 74 , acknowledge the following as our last will and testament. One particularly generous member of our class is Howie Coombs. Howie plans on leav- ing his entire brain to Gordie Fitch. He is also quite modest about it, saying that his brain won't even help Gordie. Now is that modesty? Tony Maxfield is also extremely generous, although not quite so modest. He'd like to bestow upon some lucky future student of WHS all of his wonderful talents, skills, and luck. Like these two, most of the other students would like to leave items which others may find use for in order to help them through their high school years, whether or not they be students, teachers, or members of the administra- tion. Carlene Butler leaves her bloomers fsize 4Ol with center half, to Jane Conlin. Kathy Jillett, because of her interest in the education of future freshmen, leaves to them all of her Newsweeks from P.O.D. - that's Problems of Democracy, Mr. Garrett. Another talented senior, Carl Singeais, leaves his rope-climbing ability to any deserving underclassmen. Les Wiberg leaves his Robert Redford looks to some underclassmen who unfortunately hap- pens to look like Les. Billy Kelley, in an effort to be a helpfull person, leaves his complete set of tests to AI Cariglio, Kevin Kleynen, in what appears to be a message of warning, leaves all of Mr. Kelley's bad jokes to everyone in his Calculus class next year. Joe Cunningham would like to help out Ray Noel. He's leaving Ray ZV2 credits for next year. Dave Anderson leaves lOl Armenian jokes to Lynn Rinker, although they probably won't be so funny since Dana won't be around. Micki Cavanaugh would like to leave Ainsworth Road to Bobby Cain. Cindy Miller would like to leave Laura the privilege of walking down the school corridor without being pushed. John Stira leaves graduation practice to anyone who can hack it. Of course it may have been tough, but practice makes perfect as you'll see next Sunday. Paul Capozzi is happy enough to leave, period. Mary Castaldo leaves her title of class flirt to Linda Kovitch and Cindy Jepson. Karen Graves leaves to the students of future graduating classes of WHS, knowledge, love, and peace, which, of course, typifies the predominant characteristics of our class, anyway. Elaine Lyford leaves Room 7l9 of the Plaza Hotel to her brother and Janice. Crash Debby Chase leaves all the dents in cars to anyone who thinks they can park better than her. Margie Coulton leaves her shorthand notebook to Mrs. Gershon, that is, if she can read it. Janice Spada leaves a pair of torn stockings, a broken diamond ring, and one Anophole Quad- rimaculatas to the drama club. Janice Bognore leaves the patchwork pillows in the people center to anyone who needs a nap. Dana Daniell leaves his unlucky name, DOG to some undeserving soul. Dana, l don't think you're going to be able to leave that name anywhere. lt's yours through life, l'm afraid. Bryan Davey leaves his image as being a big scoop to Donald O'Connell and Bob Dorval. Bob Doyle leaves all his empty trays, milk cartons, and food to Ellie . Denise Ethier leaves her title as Class Shrimp to next year's shrimp and she hopes the holder of this title will have as many laughs as she did. She wants you to know that there are five feet stilts in her locker. Paul Fitch leaves his winning hat to Rick McCully and Tim Nee. Kathy Gilligan leaves hall sentries, no-man's land between the cafe and the people center, and other such frustrations to Mr. Lynch. Jack Holloway leaves his empty Schlitz cans to Jack Stygles. Cheryl Lawler leaves all the hardwork that goes into the making of a yearbook to some unsuspecting junior. To Don Sunnenberg goes the task of forging passes, courtesy of Dave Mather. Scott Mosher leaves his procrastination to any- one who can use it and get away with it. That sounds like alot of people l know, putting off everything they do until the last minute, right Stew? Mark O'Hearne leaves his height to little John Kaminiski. He'd also like to leave an omnibus ticket to Mrs. Mindell. Shirley Ricci leaves Wilmington High School to the seniors who stay back. Penny Richards leaves the horrible idea of getting up the next morning to go to school to Gerry Steeves. Margy Mallett leaves a ten year subscription of Playboy to Mr. Dulong. Bob Reid leaves ups and overs and wind Sprints to Gary McDonald. Cheryl Bennett leaves her typewriter to anyone who wants to take their frustrations out on something. From what I understood about the condition of many of the typewriters, many people already have done so. Bruce Bishop leaves his mess in Graphic Arts to Mr. Lentine, saying it will take him ten years to clean it up. Dave Allen leaves the wall outside of Mr. Fardy's room to Rich Stratton. Maureen Lounsbury leaves her dungarees to anybody who enjoys the comfortable way of living. Debbie Saunders leaves her beautiful car to anyone who wants it. The seventh period people-center girls leave a machine gun to Miss McCarthy for sentry duty. Cheryl Tomasi leaves her perfect attendance record to Louise Swisher, raisins . Carole-Anne Tyler leaves her busdriver to anyone who's never missed the bus. He'll help you break your record. Patty Vayo leaves her cruddy gymsuit to anybody who can stand it. Wendy Wiberg leaves her position as skinniest cheerleader to Ellen. Finally, there are some items people would like to leave that seem senseless, but which probably have some personal significance. For example, Donna Mullens leaves her spot in B.O. land to Louise Swisher. Gail Irwin leaves the Swamp to McMillan, Sully, McNabb, and Arnold. Chet Hall leaves what he found to anybody that wants it. Bernadette Gallagher leaves her locker designed by Kathy Boylen to anyone who likes the name Bertha. Karen Fudge leaves her baby powder to Marie Fantasia. Barb Coursey leaves a yellow comb, oops , mother hen to Jim O'Connors. Jim Ruggierio leaves a horse shoe to Joe Cunning- ham. Nancy White leaves her track sneakers to Mrs. Bean. Becky Suggs leaves road directions to Miss Stanceau. Paul Sferraza leaves Mr. McMahon his gym towel to give him something to comb his hair with. The senior science munchkins leave a bag of their tricks to Johnny Merlin. Cilla Martell leaves her four year old sneakers, that could walk away by themselves, to anyone who can stand the odor. LouAnn Rice leaves her faithful camel to Mr. Keller's used camelot. Lavinia White leaves the end of the graduation line to next year's tallest girl. Terry Patenaude leaves her nickname Shirley to Louise Swisher. Bob Scarano and Chet Hall jointly leave lobster shells to the maitre d' at Pier 4. Bob Stewart leaves Ben Hogan's milk to Mr. Joyce. Susan Peabody leaves a long playing album consisting of forty minutes of Sue's patented laughing. This album is made under the supervision of her directors, B.S. and P.G., who continually prompt her by saying pen, pen . Lastly and most importantly, however, we, the class of l974 would like to leave our thanks to the faculty and administration of Wilmington High School. They're made us what we are today. Seriously, though, high school can probably be considered the most important and memorable part of our lives. The reason for this is that it's the time of our lives when we change and mature from the savage freshmen we were when we entered high school to mature people, with at least the basic characteristics that will be part of our personalities throughout our entire lives. So for being part of this most memorable time in our lives, the entire Class of '74 leaves to you, the faculty and administration of WHS, our thanks. Paul Gracia The year is l999 and the government corruption and scandals of the 70's are still upon us. President Joe Lunetta is in the process of being impeached with l5 days to go in his term of office, but nobody will tell us why. President Joe, as he is affectionately called, has just created a new cabinet-level post called the Clean Water and Other Consumable Fluid Bureau. This bureau is headed by Ed Maloney who is assisted by Tom Martin. Their first official act in office was to create beer as the national drink. Bob Scarano, formerly Juan Scarini, a native from the island of Tahiti and also a professional wrestler, is now chief of staff protecting President Joe's every move. Dave Anderson has finally made it to be Betty Crocker Homemaker of the Year. With this auspicious award comes the job of cooking and preparing the food for the White House. Mark O'Hearne, Dave Allen, Les Wiberg, and Patty Hanlon, who each own a Friendly's lce Cream Store, are now in court because of an alledged contribution to the now famous Ice Cream Fund . Carl Singelais is now the president's speech writer. His writing is so messy that they have to have Frank Shukis, a decoder from the CIA, come in to translate. Frank does an excellent job since he has had many years of experience decoding his own handwriting. After the President makes one of these speeches, the nation is usually upset by the bad news, so Sue Peabody comes on and laughs non-stop for an hour to cheer the people up. The President has to be cheered up too, after he makes his speech. This job is done by the world renown Las Vegas comedian Paul Sferazza who got this job through his manager Bryan Davey. Dean Devlin is now the official wine and beer taster for the White House with Kevin Kleynan as the official food tester, the only problem being that when they get through tasting the beer, wine, and food there's none left. Mary Castaldo is the wife of some obscure man, a former Attorney General. She's always on the phone and never stops talking. Meryl Clark, Jean Novak, Cathy Howlett, Lynn Murphy, and Donna Mullens are leading the White House Pep Squad which consists of the members of the Grand Old Opra in Nashville where the President recently played, and the President's dog, King Timahee, whose personal physician is Patty Vaye. Cheryl Lawler is the President's personal secretary whose slight absent-mindedness re- sulted in an l8V2-minute gap in a very important tape recording. Paul Fitch, whose fortune was gained through his chain of bunny clubs in competition with Hugh Hefner, is down in Costa Rica hiding from federal authorities due to his illegal S200,000 campaign contribu- tion. Kathi Gilligan is now the head of the House Judiciary committee in charge of the impeachment. As chairwoman of this committee, although she may become very bored listening to the presidential tapes, she has certainly acquired a new list of four-letter words. Bruce Bishop is currently the head of the Air Force, Dana Daniell the head of the Navy, and Johnny Harrison is the head of the Army, their only duty is to control their new secret weapon . . . Joey Cunningham dressed up as Donny Osmond. You see, they send Joey out on to the battle field in the Mid-East and all the female soldiers go wild over him and there's no more war, it's very simple. This eases the burden of Margie Coulton who is country- hopping trying to create world peace. Dianne Pintrich, Sue Lowry, Lisa Branzetti, and Wendy Wiberg are back down in Bermuda as secret agents studying the male natives on that island. Janice Spada, Margaret Forrest, Elaine Lyford, Paul Gracia, Tony Maxfield, Richard Grinder, Wanda Dahl, Barbara Coursey, and Carole-Ann Tyler have all just won Tony Awards for their special White House performance of the new hit play Helen Keller Sees Again, costumes by Karen Passmore and JoAnne MacQuarrie and directed and pro- duced by Lavinia White. Jim Buck, Wade Holbrook, and John Stira combine to make up the White House Band. Under the direction of bandleader, Steve Bussell, they play the new national anthem, the Budweiser Song. Joe Brazell is the director of Health, Education, and Welfare. What kind of health, what kind of education, and whose welfare he doesn't tell us. As director, Joe has taken care of some of his old friends back at Wilmington High School. He has appointed Bob Doyle to the post of assistant principal at WHS, his sole duty being to direct traffic in the parking lot in the morning. By the way, the parking lot is guarded by Rick Virtus for obvious reasons. Susan Hosmer, Debbie DeAngelais, and Maureen Lounsbury have taken up the positions of nurses in the Wilmington School System. Their duties consist of stabbing poor, defenseless seniors with gigantic needles. As a last ditch effort to help some of his former classmates along, Joe has replaced some of the more senior members of the teaching staff with people from the class of '74. Judy LeFaveur has replaced Miss Bocchino, Wes Ryan - Mr. Maggie, Cliff Downs - Mr. Joyce, Larry Foster - Mr. Fessenden, Kenny Kumm - Mr. DiSarcina, Brian Phillips - Mr. Lynch, Dave Spring - Coach Aylward, and Gary Kelloway - Dr. Callahan. These members of the class of '74 perform the sole duty that these teachers performed in their years of service to old WHS, they had the courage to show up. And in one final effort to save WHS from complete ruin, Joe brought Ellie, the caf lady, out of retirement. Dianne Spear, Bob Frengillo, and Nancy White, all managers of Dunking Doughnut shops have merged with Pewter Pot managers Cheryl Bennett and Janice Bog- nore to form a new establishment known as The Dunking Pot, where corrupt politicians go to drown their sorrows. Howie Coombs, April Anderson, Jim Ruggiero, and Harold Walley, all graduates of Mr. Beaton's economics class, are now the leading economists in the country, overseeing where every penny is spent, making sure there is economy in govern- ment, but of course they pay themselves Sl50,000 a year. ln Washington, there has been a flood of new athletic teams coming into this city. A new football team, coached by Gail Irwin with players such as Jack Holloway, Doug Stewart, Tom Woods, Rick Howlett, and Ray Noel, a soccer team coached by Jay Garden with Mark Kalkanajian, Timmy Swisher, Barry Aruda, Roy Meyer, and Ronny Lawrenceson. A pro- tennis team with player-coach Kathy Pavelcak, Ann-Marie Breakey, Mike Mahoney, John Arvanitis, Mary Jane Cunningham, Tommy Webber, and Beth Bradford. And a baseball team coached by Bob Cheney with MaryAnn Langone, Cheryl Reid, and Carlene Butler. The reason why all of these teams have come to Washington is because they found the necessary playing grounds on the White House Lawn, you see the President got into a little problem with the IRS and he had to rent out the White House lawn in order to raise some money fast. On the local level, Bob Butters is now a state representative who doubled as a used car salesman, selling used Plymouths. Becky Suggs and Karen Fudge are in charge of keeping Bobby's smile nice and bright, because you know about politicians and you know about used car salesmen, so when you mix the two together you're in trouble. Jake Tighe is now the chief law enforcement officer in the U.S., his first duty was to change the streaking laws. There is now a national lottery directed by Debbie Grant and Valerie Hall. Wayne Kirby and Ed Adams are against this lottery since they believe it cheats the people out of their hard earned money. They have been trying to figure out the probability of winning, with their great training from Mr. Woodbury's probability class, but the only thing that they have found out is that the probability of finding the probability is very low. Steve Whalen is a former vice president, formerly governor of Maryland, who has resigned in favor of playing golf. The way that they treated political enemies before the Watergate Affair was to have the v.p. play golf with them, and everybody knows about the v.p.'s golf playing ability. Now all they do to political enemies is to have the President support them. The person who took over after this v.p. resigned was Scott Mosher, the only problem here was that he takes is title seriously, we now have a president in charge of vice. Bernie Gallagher, Kathy Boylen, Paul Gappezzi, Janice Gennetti, Terry Patenaude, Denise Ethier, Gail Gustafeson, Billy Kelley, and Laurie Justice are the nine justices of the Supreme Court. They have just ruled in favor of allowing Wilmington High School to implement capital punishment to be used on the little kiddies who fail to show the proper identification when stopped in the hallway. So in the year l999 many of the members of the class of l974 have achieved various positions of distinction. They have in this prophecy, as I'm sure they will in their actual lives, set goals for themselves and achieve these goals. One of our classmates said this very well: We can Soar to the goals we set for ourselves, for the sky is our limit and the doors of time have just now opened. C Thank you.
